That is rollin' down the tracks
To the junction"
Where have you gone, Uncle Joe?
This video begins with views of the New York, Susquehanna & Western's Utica NY yard as the crew begins their day on April 23, 2024.
Next, a long view of the freight's southbound passage on Schuyler Street is presented.
The concluding scenes are at Richfield Junction, offering both southbound and northbound views of the Utica local.
And, for those of you who have no clue about the history of the lyrics quoted above: • Petticoat Junction the...

Cheers from Belton MO. In 1960-61, we had the last Frisco passenger train end service to our fair town.

Very nice to get to see the old pictures. From about @8:53, the camera angle made the train look like a toy almost. It's always fun to watch drivers duck and run away when they spot the locomotive coming down the road.

Looking in from York, England - thank you for another great video! Really enjoy your commentary with great historical information as well as news of Witold. The historical photos at the end really give context to this video - looking at it today, who would have thought Richfield Junction would have looked like that!

Watching from Beavercreek Ohio this evening. Always great to see this train going thru city and countrysides. There is more entertainment in the winter when the cars play dodge em with the train. It is nice that you give the background of the line throughout its years of operation.

Thank you for the old B&W photos at the end. Steam locomotives are so cool! I think a local RR company bought a Chinese steam locomotive not too long ago. It was actually used on some revenue runs. Or, am I hallucinating?

From Milwaukee where it got below freezing last night and we'll just barely be above tonight. If I'm ever in town I'll have to check out Dick Smith's Bar for medicinal purposes and to see who ran the Susie Q Marathon. After seeing all those virtual rail clips from Ashland VA and LaGrange KY how many autos decide they want to become railroad cars in plow Straight Ahead into the dirt and ties? Since the box cars were rearranged that meant they went down to the old NYOW track first and then made the Green Thumb Express with fertilizer to the end of the line. You did a fine job of filling in for the house sitting canine and I do thank you for the virtual complete shot of Street running. Excellent selection of black and white photos of this area in years past. Unless there's a whole big group of homes behind you this town sure didn't appear to get even close to being a big city

The area around Richfield Junction has retained its rural character that’s for sure. There are a lot of stories I’ve heard over the years from retired railroaders about having to get the attention of bar patrons (or being unable to do so….) when transiting Schuyler Street. Thanks for commenting

Watching from Austin, TX, and wondering, I wonder how that street-run is constructed under the pavement? Maybe ties on roadbed as usual, then pave around it? Seems like it would settle differently, but adjusting for that every few decades would be manageable.

Where were the station and water tower in relation to the legs of the wye? I was in train service on the D-O Richfield branch in 1976-77. This was before the NYSW operations (of which I know nothing at all). We used a call box near the north end of the wye to call the E-L/CR dispatcher for permission to occupy their track during interchange operations. I don't remember the south leg of the wye or where it tied in with the north leg up the hill (not saying it didn't exist then). We used a parallel track (with a switch at each end) along the Utica main track, for interchange. I don't recall if there were any other tracks at the time. The south switch: was it the south leg of the wye? Pardon my vague memory: it was a long time ago.

Seems like from looking at the old photos at the end of the video that the station & water tower were pretty much equal-distant between the north and south ends of the wye, near where the set-off track was for cars meant for the R Sprgs line. I recall that old concrete phone box, there was a lot of pencil scribbling in there by railroaders, including mention of the O&W trainmen who lost their jobs when that railroad went kaput in 1957

Yes, that’s where 3040 is usually stored during most of the year when it is the only power on the branch.

Wondering if you could tell me why sometimes CSX 2722 is in the lead and other times Susquehanna 3040 is in the front, with 2722 behind it? Thanks. Watching from Brooklyn NY
@railroadingrambler218
@railroadingrambler218 Ай бұрын
Whichever engine is in the lead heading down to Sangerfield will be in the second spot on return to Utica as they will use the engines cannot be turned there. As far as why the chose a certain engine to be on point coming out of the yard, I really don’t know. Sometimes 3040 leads, more recently it’s been 2722 up front.
