AT Thru Hike Day 140 - 1400, Hudson River, Bear Mountain, Anthony's Nose, Ball Field Oh My!

Another great day on your hike. Too bad for the rain though. I am continuously amazed and delighted with your with your amazement and delight on the simple things you see on the trail. Your comments on those simple things (tall grass, high trees, rock face, etc) make following you on your jouirney all that much more enjoyable. I feel that I am there with you. Thank you for that.

Back in 1982, "Graymoor Monastery" took hikers in. They gave us a great dinner and each hiker got their own room. One of the Friars took us to the highest part of the monastery to get photos. All-ya-can-breakfast next morning...

Very interesting and scenic section. FYI, that re-route to avoid the highway would have been much more of a challenging climb - the Timp-Torne trail approach is quite technical (but scenic). For the descent from Bear Mtn, I think they should reroute the AT away from that over-populated tourist trail. There is an alternative trail down called the Major Welch trail that is a lot quieter and nicer.

The detour on the sign states that the detour only adds 1.25 miles. Frankly with that traffic I think the extra time on the trail is worth it to stay alive.

You missed your best chance of seeing a bear with the zoo being closed. Great view from Anthony's Nose. I wish I had known about that. Good to see Graymoor is still doing stuff for the hikers. I figured they couldn't do what they did in the past due to the volume of hikers. Back in the day, you got to stay in the Monastery and they fed us.

Quite a challenging day, Jay. But your perseverance & unrelenting will power once again paid off! All the views were breathtaking, even the fog and passing clouds. So happy you made it to your destination. I was happy to see the children, being exposed to nature’s beauty, however, as you said, they should be taught to respect nature. And the kid with the beer was extremely disturbing. Sometimes, … I just don’t know… Thank you, for taking us with you, and sharing all you possibly can with us. Stay safe & keep it moving. The AT originally went up the face of Anthony's Nose from behind the anchorage on the eastern side. Harriman from Agony Grind to the Bear Mountain Inn was the first section of the AT ever blazed. The park was built with the intention of bringing people from NYC to open spaces and the forest in the early 20th century. Many summer camps were built, some remain, and hundreds of thousands of children spent their summer in Harriman. The island is Iona Island connected to the mainland by a slim causeway and railroad tracks formerly held a large Navy Ammunitions Depot for both WWI and WWII. Used to have over a hundred warehouses on it holding thousands of bombs used in both wars. Was decommissioned in 1950's and abandoned. Buildings torn down by 1980.

I used to run over the Palisades Parkway when I was a kid. Damn near died every time. Can't the ATC get Rockland County to build a foot bridge? Thought the rock head looked like a battle weary marine ' Granite Grunt'? By the way, those are city kids and many of them rarely get to see the woods and their teachers are likely not trained to teach them how to respect the green spaces.

Looked at my old journal (1982) and Trail went up to Anthony's Nose. So you were on old AT. Probably closed it because it was getting trampled...

I'm so bummed for you that it was raining & cloudy....I lived near Warwick, NY & used to take my kids up to Bear Man & the zoo all the time! Anthony's nose is such a quick rewarding hike for the views! Love following along with you & Tina. Also, the murals on the tiles are cool at Harriman tower. The kids are usually from NYC on the busses & over run the place. The pool is pretty much unusable bc there is very little supervision.

I grew up in the Bronx, Bear Mt Park was a day outing for our family or the Girl Scouts. Lots of NYC kids, day camps, school outings there. It is a busy place.

I've always been wondering if hikers actually cross the Palisades Parkway coz it's dangerous... and you did cross that Parkway! I agree with one comment here that Rockland County (or ATC?) should build a footbridge for hikers in this area. BTW, Roadrunner said in her Traildays video that we should subscribe to your videos, so I did!😊

I grew up in northern NJ in the 50s and 60s. Crossed Bear Mtn Bridge many times, usually on Boy Scout outings. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Looking forward to Mt. Washington in the Whites next - another place I've been to several times (except I ride the Cog RR up and down).

Me and my husband did that section last year and that was the scariest road crossing I have ever done. Mostly because people drive like crazy people on the hiways. Here in PA the trail always goes over or under highways.

Hi Jay, We've been watching you since day one. We're keeping track of your hike on a map of the Appilachian Trail we got when we visited Springer Mountain. Wish we could attach a picture of it. Hey Jay, I think you're a bit out of line with the kid comments on Bear Mountain. The kids were probably on a group trip with their school and are just overly excited. You can tell you don't have kids! The AT and those busy sections are not just for thru-hikers. I think it's wonderful that kids get an opportunity to leave the city for a nice adventure in the mountains.

Sadly Bear Mountain State Park has become a shit show. I usually cross the road by the tolls before walking across the bridge. For me, it's easier than trying to scurrying across that road after the bridge. Graymoor was a nice stop after a long day.

Hi Jay. I’ve done the road crossing both ways, reroute and straight across and agree with you. I think it’s only recommended at this time but not sure. I did not have a problem crossing and like you said, you just have to be patient. Great video and happy trails. 🤘🏻🥾🏕
