Күн бұрын

In the warm early afternoon of May 22 in eastern Ukraine’s war-torn region of Donetsk, a high-stakes confrontation looms. Near the village of Klenivka, 40 miles from the tumultuous frontlines of the ongoing war with Russia, Ukrainian forces prepare for a daring offensive against a powerful opponent: the state-of-the-art S-400 “Triumf” air defense system.
With its four self-propelled launchers and multifunctional radar, the S-400 stands as an intimidating symbol of Russian military might. But the Ukrainians have a powerful weapon of their own - the ATACMS ballistic missiles equipped with cluster warheads. These precision-guided missiles are aimed directly at the heart of the enemy's air defenses.
The clock ticks towards 12:50pm. Suddenly realizing the impending threat, the Russian forces ready their surface-to-air missiles, preparing to intercept the incoming barrage. Aerial footage from a reconnaissance drone shows what happens when these two cutting-edge weapons go head-to-head…

@MostlyPennyCat

S400 has the same problem Patriot did in 1991, it was designed primarily to hit air breathing targets, with only secondary capability to target ballistic targets. Which is all well and good until you have to actually do it. Shooting a cruise missile with a missile is like hitting a bullet with a bullet. Ballistic targets is that on extreme hard mode, you have to hit one spot on the bullet with one spot of your bullet. You need _a lot_ of practical experience and then you need to invest a bajillion monies to do it. Russia just pretends to do it.

After an Israeli strike in Syria, a Russian officer blew the whistle that the S300 had problems with small slow moving targets (like drones), as for the ATACMS I wouldn't be surprised if they're made out of composite materials that reduce their radar signature...

@@ZucIsCuk Also, the interface is, obsolete. It's all starting at raw radar outputs and a billion switches, it's all VERY manual with you doing all the calculations in your heads. We know this because we now have access to the world's most experienced and deadly Air Defense Artillery Operators, the Ukrainians. Who have now, after a decade of experience, transferred to Patriot. And iris-t, etc etc. They are stunned by what we have, it's push button easy, fully automatic. Even our oldest system, Patriot, is light years ahead.

It's not as simple as you think it is. The S-300 was designed primarily as a defense against NATO aircraft, like the F-16. Missiles have completely different flight profiles. Russia has been working on upgrades and changes to adapt it to the new threats it didn't expect to encounter, but that takes many years.

@@a5centYup. That's exactly what happened in 1991 during the Gulf war. The Patriot was designed to Intercept aircraft, but quickly modified to Intercept ballistic missiles. While some BMs intercepted, the Patriot overall didn't work as hoped. Call it a failure, but expecting it to do something it wasn't designed for was a lessons learned. We now have the PAC-2 GEM-T and PAC-3 hit to kill Interceptors that were designed to Intercept ballistic missiles. They were flawless in the war in Iraq and even more so after 20 more years of upgrades in Ukraine. The Russian S400s were specifically designed to Intercept ballistic missiles but clearly have not had much success against the NATO tactical ballistic missiles from HIMARS and other Guided MLRS systems

Russia’s equipment hasn’t been their main issue. Sure, it’s not the best, but it WAS adequate to win the war. Russia’s problem is their personnel, from their CIC and Gen. Staff invading with a half-cocked plan, strategy, and a failed supply chain, to their untrained foot soldiers that are unprepared and unskilled with their equipment, and the reason why billions in Russian military hardware has been destroyed, to their failed Communications specialists, who can’t seem to coordinate between companies and battalions, much less brigades, divisions, and between military branches for a combined arms effect. Russia’s equipment has looked like garbage to many observers of the war, but it’s mainly because the people operating it are deadbeats.

Once again your report is completely inaccurate. You say that the s-400 and the Atacms are cutting-edge weapons. It's not true for either of them. The s400 may be cutting edge for Russian weapons but it's an old inferior technology as the world goes. The attack of the 1980s us technology. 1980s us technology beating a 2020 Russian technology. So you've completely misunderstood and misreported the whole issue.

Sounds like he's reading the sales brochure for the S400 in the first part of the video) As @habitual_linecrosser points out; radar tracking is one thing, acquiring a usable target lock is something else entirely. Put differently, even supposing you could somehow use radar "detect" and "track" the bumblebee sized radar return of an F22, or even the substantial return of an F15, that in no way ensures you have an accurate enough position to actually do anything about it. He also points out that providing 18 ATACMS systems to Ukraine has resulted in sales of something like 10 times that many worldwide, (I forgot exactly how many) Meanwhile, Ukraine has used our Patriot system, (the American counterpart to the S400), to great effect, even downing Russian Kinzel hypersonic missiles with it
