Atahualpa Yupanqui (pronounced Átah-WALpah you-BONG-ee) was also called Don Átah by his compatriots. He wrote this song in a traditional Argentine Folk music dance form--the Zamba.
He was a beloved Argentine folk singer who wrote and sang about his love for his country and the violence and oppression of his people at the hands of dictators during the 20th century. He was exiled from Argentina for much of his adult life by different governments for speaking out. This song speaks about how sad it is to be without your home.
He was born in Buenos Aires Province in 1908 and died in Nimes, France 1992.
He met Edith Piaf in France in early adulthood, and she was pivotal in his singing career.
Adios Tucumán --
English translation follows.
Qué mala será mi pena
Que solo sabe penar
Cómo me duele esta pena
De irme tan lejos de mi Tucumán
Cómo me duele esta pena
De irme tan lejos de mi Tucumán
No me asustan los caminos
Ni arenas, ni pedregal
Por muchos que haya en el mundo
No son los caminos de mi Tucumán
Por muchos que haya en el mundo
No son los caminos de mi Tucumán
Adiós, mi pago querido
Mi rancho de raco, mi lindo sauzal
Cuando te canten mi zamba
Quién sabe tu gaucho por dónde andará
Cuando te canten mi zamba
Quién sabe tu gaucho por dónde andará
Mi sillonero Palluco
Ya nunca lo ensillaré
Lo han de cuidar las estrellas
Y, adiós, mi caballo, ya no volveré
Lo han de cuidar las estrellas
Y, adiós, mi caballo, ya no volveré
Senditas las de mi tierra
Caminitos del Tafí
Tal vez una tucumana
Bailando la zamba, se acuerde de mí
Tal vez una tucumana
Bailando la zamba, se acuerde de mí
Adiós, mi pago querido
Mi rancho de raco, mi lindo sauzal
Cuando te canten mi zamba
Quién sabe tu gaucho por dónde andará
Cuando te canten mi zamba
Quién sabe tu gaucho por dónde andará
How deep will my sorrow be,
that only knows how to mourn,
How this sorrow hurts me
To go so far from my Tucumán
how this sorrow hurts me
To go so far from my Tucumán
I'm not afraid of the roads
Nor sands, nor rocky ground
No matter how many there are in the world
They are not the roads of my Tucuman
No matter how many roads in the world
They are not the roads of my Tucumán.
Goodbye, my dear homeland
My ranch in Raco
My beautiful grove
When they sing my zamba for you
Who knows, your gaucho,
Where he will be.
When they sing my zamba for you..
Who knows, your gaucho,
Where he will be.
My saddle horse from PazucoI
Ill never saddle him again.
The stars will take care of him
And goodbye my horse, I will not return
The stars will take care of him.
And goodbye my horse, I will not return to the little paths of my land
to the road to Tafín
Maybe a woman from Tucumán
dancing the zamba, will remember me
Maybe a woman from Tucumán
dancing the zamba, will remember me
Goodbye, my dear homeland,
my ranch in Raco
my beautiful grove.
When they sing my zamba for you
who knows, your gaucho, where he will be. When they sing my zamba for you, who knows, your gaucho, where he will be......
