​​​​​​@@jonahlover Tegrena is a artificial Amharic term that was introduced to Eritrea when it was part of Ethiopia. The "ena" or "inya" in Tegrena/Tigrinya is an Amharic suffix which means "language of", so Tegrena means language of the Tigre. Tegrena-speaking people are not Tigre, which has two definition; its the name of a language spoken in the lowlands of Eritrea and its a historical designation of people in that region who were formerly serfs and vassals. Habasa is our traditional and historical ethnonym and as such it is the only authentic ethnic self-designation for Tegrena-speaking people. Habasa is also the traditional designation for the Tegrena language. I'm sure you have heard of the expression "qwanqwa Habasa." That is the original name for Tegrena as a language. In short, we are only Habasa by blood/ancestry, language, and culture. John
