Atarashii Gakko has been around since the girls were 13-16 (2015). They are a dance team that can sing, in 2019 they were released by their record label and picked up by US label 88 rising in 2020 (the CEO of the label was shown a tik tok video of them by a friend, and signed them). They started grinding out the festival scene with 88 rising, and at one point had a bigger following outside Japan. They were grinding clubs with 500-1k capacity. Their first US tour was only a few cities in smaller venues. In Jan of 2023 their song from 2020 Otonablue went viral, On all media including shares, it has been viewed an estimated 3 billion times. This was the breakout year in 2023, they went from grinding smaller clubs, to selling out Budokan in Jan 2024 as a solo act. in 2024 they did a world tour part 1, in Europe and Asia Averaging over 1.9K at each show. Part 2 was North America where they were selling out venues and averaging 3,000 per show (8,000 at Mexico City show). They returned to Japan to 7 sold out Arena shows. 2025 is their 10th year as a group, they are planning something special for that (likely in Japan only, will likely be streamed). Based on 2024, they are just getting started. They are very goofy, unconventional, addictive and sing about the issues in Japanese culture and other big no nos for Idol groups. They push for free expression and being yourself even while following the restrictive norms of society. Some call them an anti-idol group. They also have songs ranging from jazz to rock to hip hop. Also worth mentioning is they do all their own choreography Hope this helps, If you want to see their high energy style, try this video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/jn67iX9uoMZqm7csi=DbgomOXIPnzfD4h3

"Essa Hoisa" is used sort of like "heave-ho" to synchronize physical effort. You'll hear it a festivals where groups of people carry heavy shrines around. You can see this physical effort in the wide stances and deliberate steps of the dancing. The lyrics talk about effort and fortitude. AG! like to reference older Japanese pop music and here Suzuka uses the over the top vibrato that became popular in a pop version of traditional Enka music in the 1960s. This is a strange entry to AG!, but also a great one, even with the poor fancam audio, as it shows their uniqueness; they aren't following the usual paths of pop music and a line from the song actually says: If you walk down this rough road where there are no footprints yet, まだ誰の足跡もない 荒れたこの道を行けば Essa (Essa) Hoisa (Hoisa) えっさ (えっさ) ほいさ (ほいさ) AG! were formed in 2015 by the Asobisystem agency. Mizyu (oldest, shortest and with 2 x hair bunches) had worked with the agency before as a backup dancer to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and they brought in Rin, Suzuka and Kanon to make AG! They do all the choreography themselves and work with producers on the music and often write the lyrics. They put out a couple of jazz influenced albums, but their quirky style and music didn't bring big sales so their record label dropped them in 2019. But this turned into an opportunity as they did some showcases and were picked up by the American label 88Rising in 2020. They then came to California and worked with producer Money Mark and since then they have had international success and went viral in Japan in 2023 with Otona Blue. They completed a world tour in 2024 and look set for even more success in 2025. If you want more AG! check out "Atarashii Gakko, live in Koln, NaiNaiNai" and "Maximum the Hormone - Shimi, featuring Atarashii Gakko"

"You can see this physical effort in the wide stances and deliberate steps of the dancing." Also, during the "deliberate steps" they hike up their skirts a bit above the knee, as one would roll up your sleeves to indicate readiness to get to work, or perhaps even to keep your pants hems from getting muddied on this "rough road".

Your joyful reaction made me feel happy too. This song is one of my favorites. Thank you. This song depicts travelers who carve their own paths to meet their loved ones. It represents AG! going beyond Japan to meet audiences around the world. Despite facing various difficulties, it encourages us to keep going with strong will and the power of companionship. I found a video of traditional festival " Essa, Hoisa" chants, so please take a look if you like. The Shitamachi Rengo Mikoshi Parade 2024 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJvbfHSdmLR4gqssi=3el2WXydE7zq9ELI

Not sure how you stumbled on this particular AG song, because great as it is, it’s a weird one.. It’s an extended version of their concert entrance theme. “Essa Hoisa” is a chant from traditional Japanese festivals. A crowd of men will chant it as they lift a huge heavy parade float on their soldiers. It’s a rousing and traditional sounding call for strength and unity. Suzuka’s delivery uses the exaggerated vibrato of enka, a somewhat old fashioned hyper-dramatic style of singing. It’s also intentionally incongruous. You wouldn’t expect something like this from a squad of tiny school girls. But this is AG (Atarashii Gakko!, literally, New School), and they specialize in the unexpected. They are a genre unto themselves. They are tons of fun, extremely diverse in their output, very original, goofy, yet passionate and strangely inspirational. They are billed as a dance vocal unit, and they always do their own choreo, which is quirky to say the least. Some of my own favorites to try are, Seishun Wo Kirisaku Hado and Giri Giri, choreography versions.

Oh wow I didn't know that Essa Hoisa is a chant. Someone told me about the group and I'm glad they did. I love hearing new things about cultures. I'll have to look into those songs as well at some point

Have fun going down the AG! rabbit hole. A fan cam is an unusual choice, but also kind of the best one, for a first reaction. They are so good live. They celebrate their tenth anniversary this year, but it took quite a while for them to get noticed. Their performance of Otonablue on The First Take finally was their breakthrough in Japan in 2023. Most of their music videos since 2021 have English subtitles. Musically they are all over the place, ranging from 80's pop to metal (their collaboration with Maximum The Hormone) and pretty much everything in-between. They do their own choreography and have quite a few dance practice and choreography videos in addition to the music videos on their channel. Some songs you could check out for a start are Otonablue (The First Take), Tokyo Calling, Night Before The Exam, Seishun Wo Kirisaku Hado, Pineapple Kryptonite or Change.
