They had to rein in their choreography for this... They are a song and dance unit performing their own choreography to their songs. They bring humour to all their performances but the lyrics often have a serious message (delivered with charm). There other stuff is worth checking out as no song or performance is the same as any other. They have a ton of videos online. Otona Blue means "Adult Blues", but there's a pun as Suzuka always introduces it as "Otona Buru" which means "to act like an adult". It's heavily influenced by the 70s Japanese hit "Furui Nikki" by Akiko Wada so that's the funky synth stuff you are hearing. AG! are very much about a whole performance; they all have dance backgrounds and do all their own choreography so they are very different from other idol type dance groups and you won't find the usual moves. FYI they don't see themselves as an idol group and avoid the banal sexuality of most female song and dance groups. Here they come up with a memorable way to get on and off stage which is a basic requirement of a stage performance that many performers find difficult. Suzuka is the main singer because of her strong voice and even stronger on stage personality - she body surfs the crowd at live shows - but AG! does not have a leader. Rin does a lot of rap and Kanon and Mizyu use their higher register voices to sing more melodic parts. I can see that their style didn't click with you, which is a shame, but they are irreverent and funny and have other songs so give them another chance and you might come to admire their talent more. You didn't mention the lyrics at all and they are really important and quite controversial with many reactors. The song is about how a teenage girl experiences the male gaze and her desire to experience adult emotions and love even though she knows that she's still too young for them. The lyrics were written by AG! which saves it from being really creepy and it's probably a subject that is very relevant to 4 young women who have made their careers performing in front of audiences. AG! were formed in 2015 by the Asobisystem agency. Mizyu (oldest, shortest and with 2 x hair bunches) had worked with the agency before as a backup dancer to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and they brought in Rin, Suzuka and Kanon to make AG! They worked on developing their act and choreography and put out a couple of jazz influenced albums, but their quirky style and music didn't bring big sales so their record label dropped them in 2019. So your opinion was shared by many people in Japan. They were picked up by the American label 88Rising in 2020 and paired with the producer Money Mark and since then they have had international success and went viral in Japan in 2023 with Otona Blue. They completed a world tour in 2024 and look set for even more success in 2025. If you want more AG! check out "Atarashii Gakko, live in Koln, NaiNaiNai" and "Maximum the Hormone - Shimi, featuring Atarashii Gakko"

Babymetal has just started a half-hour radio show in Japan talking about metal music and having guest musicians who are also metal fans even if their own music is not. The next 3 episodes will have members of Atarashii Gakko as guests. The lead singer of AG is Suzuka (Su-metal of Babymetal is also a Suzuka). Yes, they are comic, even downright demented. One of their songs is entitled "PIneapple Kryptonite". But the songs can be musically sophisticated, ranging over genres like jazz and hip-hop. And the lyrics can be quite dark. They do their own choreography. They performed at Coachella last year and performed on Jimmy Kimmel's show. At Coachella for the song "Tokyo Calling" they had as guest performers an LA-based taiko drum team and members of the USC Trojans marching band.

They actually tackle quite a few societal issues in many of their songs. Watching your reaction yes at times they are silly…it is fun. I mean I can listen to Cannibal Corpse and still enjoy fun. This is actually a pretty brave song they are singing about how they felt transitioning from kids into adults. Only thing that confuses me about your reaction is this serious? This band is free from the tight constraint’s of Japanese society, the music industry and conventional tropes. Also you do not have to sing in harmony to have multiple singers. The group is all of them not just Suzuka. It is actually and don’t think this the wrong way but rude to say the others are not needed. The others sing leads at times in other songs. Hi Abs, probably not the song I would have given you first up, but we are here now. Atarashii Gakko is a very talented vocal/dance outfit. It's hard to call the girls a band because they perform their vocals and dance almost exclusively over backing tracks. However, despite this, AG has gained a broad base of fans worldwide due to their quirky performances and relevant social messaging towards their target audience. Atarashii Gakko are loved by some, not so much by others; you will find that most of their fans understand this and won't negatively mark your dance card. So, it's absolutely fine if you don't like them. As an Australian, I liken AG to Vegemite, a sandwich spread that divides the world. As with Vegemite, you have to start with a little smear on your sandwich to start building up your tolerance to the taste, AG are a bit like this. Once you find the smear of Vegemite's flavour waning, you spread it a bit thicker. AG is a similar process for western viewers, start small, work to big. Abs, you kinda landed in the middle here with no prior context, like a medium layer of Vegemite on your toast in the morning, it can be a bit shocking, enough to make your face screw up and make your sphincters go into overdrive. Abs, you didn't like this, and that's fine, but I am about five years into AG and I love them; however, each to their own.

This song has cultural resonances in Japan that don’t usually resonate with folks abroad. It’s simultaneously a parody and an homage to music of the 80’s and 90’s, with specific nods to artists like Akiko Wada (an extremely popular artist and TV personality with a deep strong voice and a masculine persona that verges on drag), or Akina Nakamori, who sang very sultry songs at an age that would be considered pretty inappropriate in this day and age. For the Japanese audience , it was silly, nostalgic, satirical, controversial, tantalizingly ambiguous, maybe even feminist. As an American with a fair amount of context to go by, and a love for serious-minded goofiness, I think it’s genius. Don’t feel bad, there are lots of Japanese folks who hate on it too. But please give AG more chances. They are totally eclectic and like nothing else out there. I’ve seen them twice live in the US, and they REALLY know how to connect with a foreign audience,when that’s the goal. They put on an amazing show.

I'm looking forward to the Babymetal radio program with AG. These are the last 2 groups I've seen live, Babymetal in Milwaukee and AG in Chicago. This MV was my first exposure to AG, I found it quirky and fun. As a metalhead in his 50's I was WTF??? Then I read that they worked with Beastie Boys old producer, I checked out "Pineapple Kryptonite", "Forever Sisters" and their take on Beastie's "Intergalactic". That led me to "Suki Lie", "NAINAINAI", " Woo Go", " Tokyo Calling" and "Fly High" and others. I saw them with my daughter at a show that was sold out (5,000) or pretty close to it just after their collab with Maximum the Hormone was released. The fans were hyped, and all their dancing had the venue's floor flexing... This was the first concert that I've ever been to that there wasn't a band on stage, just 4 young ladies having fun and dancing their hearts out. I had a blast, please give then another try. Nice to see a group that entertains without taking themselves too seriously. Also, Momo-metal says she's so excited for their radio show with AG that she doesn't think she'll be able to sleep.

finally i've found someone appreciating this epic reggaeton march ! it's my #1 song now (taken the crown from koi geba). it's much better then overrated tokyo calling while having the same epic vibe, but i understand how tokyo calling is more digestible for an average listener. really want to have a proper mv for this gem.

Haha, it was a comical parody about Japanese social issues - I really don’t think it’s presented in a way that makes it easy to take as seriously as the topic itself. I think that maybe a live performance rather than a One take may have been more interesting but the lack of harmonies I think is deliberate to add to the parody. TBH I didn’t like it much myself but as you said the main singer does have a nice warm tone.

@@Abigirl_Reacts sorry for this hasty comment: I wrote it before going to the comment section where I found out you're going to give AG another listen. When you said "it's not for me", I assumed you're going to pass on them. This is a really bad song to introduce someone to AG. It's very similar to BM's Gimme Chocolate, which tends to turn people away (although, I find this song a perfect example of what kawaii metal is). The problem with AG is that their songs are so diverse that it's hard to guess which one the first time listener will like: there's always a chance the reactor hate this specific genre. Maybe, Tokyo Calling will be your thing. It's not my favorite, but seems a lot of people like it. It has epic brass section (and you asked for something epic :)).

I know it is hard to believe, but these girls are PUNK. Fight the system PUNK! Atarashi Gakko translates as New School Leaders, they are leading a new school of Japanese 'being'. Using cute and silly as weapons, their lyrics may seem opaque and superficial to many Westerners but in Japan they know how to read between the lines. I have read, and believe, that they are regarded in many quarters as 'the most dangerous band in Japan'. Now, I am not a particularly big fan of their music style as such, I prefer Band-Maid and Maximum the Hormone. I am a 66 year old white guy from the UK and watching them does make me feel a bit guilty, like I am some asian fetisch prevert. But, I am and always have been, up for anything punk, rebellious, different. Atarashi Gakko does that for me. They are very talented at what they do, and yes, Suzuka has a fantastic voice. I hope you give them a chance reveal more, by reacting to Tokyo Calling and Shimi "with Max.t.h." Thanks for reacting to this though, enjoyed it as always . 👍✌

Personally I really love AG. But yes, they are silly. Even though they exaggerated it for this First Take IMHO. But, they are also deadly serious. They are excellent dancers and athletes. Their songs are generally catchy and they contain some kind of social engagement, sometimes very serious and sometimes small stuff, like eating candy and get sugar high and sugar low. One of their more serious ones is Koi Geba which is about teachers taking advantage of female pupils. Very dark video.

Think my faves of what I've heard so far are Tokyo Calling and Toryanse. Generally I prefer the heavier bands, such as Band Maid who I believe have the same line up as when they formed many years ago, but this bunch have a sense of wicked fun about them that appeals to this 'ol Queen :-). I get what you say in your reaction as this is not a favourite of mine, though I do like it, kerk

This performance does a good job of showing their personalities, but there's a youtube channel called Wings of Pegasus where the guy on the channel breaks down how First Take is a fraudulent channel that clearly uses autotune. He uses this song as an example. It was . . . depressing, but enlightening and hard to refute.

@ it was when you question3d whether Kanon , Rin, or Mizyu were even necessary because they were all singing the same thing, you instantly reminded me of “Amadeus” when Mozarts rival had the king complaining that there were “too many notes”, they’re singing like this because they are supposed too, this is how the song goes, it’s part of the song. They were having a blast and you wanted them to be “serious” because you couldn’t figure out if the song was a comedy? Watched your other episodes and love them, it was just these guys, and I kept thinking how hurt they’d be to see your review of this (now that I’ve reread this, it’s definitely a “me” thing🤦♀️😹)
@Abigirl_Reacts7 сағат бұрын
Hi Tracy, although I personally find it unnecessary to have 3 girls singing in unison, it's fine if they do so. It's just not for me. I wasn't reviewing them or anything. I just don't get it. It's why I was confused for the majority of this video. I don't want them to be serious. I definitely didn't think it was serious, I thought they were being silly. At least that's the way my confusion was leaning. You gotta admit, this wasn't the best song to introduce me to the band. I'm going to hear something different soon because I gotta hear more of Suzuka's voice. I really liked it!

Atarashii Gakko! is a talented group of artists. They don't play instruments themselves, but they dance and sing. They write the lyrics for some of their songs and direct them live. And in this performance of ‘The First Take’, I think they provoked and enjoyed us by attacking the edge of sillyness and seriousness. I am glad you take up AG!, but it might have certainly room to think about whether this song or this performance is the best choice for a first song. It's certainly a popular one from them, but the minority opinions, those say this performance doesn't showcase their true energy having in the live shows and I agree with it. The other songs, or live performances showcase the individual personalities of each of the four girls. However, then I am not sure about what to recommend. I prefer their earlier songs to their more recent works tghough... Anyway, I hope you keep on reacting to AG! more. Thank you from Japan.

Im so sorry that this song was your fisrt foray into Atarashii Gakko. The fandom, like that of Hanabie do an amazing job of requsting their worst song that is in no way representative of the group or their other songs. Otana Blue is hot garbage and more than a little creepy. Other much better songs are Tokyo Calling, Fly High, Omakase, Suki Lie, Toryanse, or my personal favorite Change.

@Abigirl_Reacts Sazuka's voice is exactly why Change is my favorite song from them. She goes soooo low. It's amazing. The song was released at the end of August and still somehow manged to make it into my top 10 listened to tracks of the year. I'm a metal head, but Atarashii Gakko is one of my top favorite groups. They are so much better than this song. Also they did a collaboration with Maximum the Hormone that goes hard
