I decided I wanted the Atari Gamestation Pro since I don't have any physical Atari 2600 or 7800 titles and ended up getting it for Christmas from my parents. Did the firmware update on it and added many additional games to it that I used to play as a kid. Very happy with that system. Thanks for making videos about it or very likely I wouldn't have known that system even existed.😊 Atari 50 has been really cool as well. Got that for multiple modern consoles just cause I could. Haha.

I get that upgrading the firmware on these devices is good to ensure your device is running optimally, but my goodness that installation process is not intuitive or very user friendly, to me it seems even more complicated than the GSP update process. I really hope nobody destroys their console while performing these upgrade procedures. I really think the firmware installation tools for these devices should be contained in a setup wizard rather than relying on users to run multiple programs just to install the firmware update.

Great video Jon! Yeah, they really need to streamline the update process moving forward. I've hit problems similar to what you mentioned, updating mini consoles in the past with driver conflicts, etc. It's all a bit amateur and messy tbh. Keep up the awesome work!

I went through the update. I didn't think it was difficult and it took less than 10 mins. Went flawlessly for me. The biggest change for me was that the difficulty switches are now correctly setup, and the 7800 'a' button (instead of 'b') is now set to match the only fire button on a 2600 joystick, making games like Pole Position II playable with a regular 2600 joystick.

Beta testing should always be conducted prior to a product’s release, not after, and necessary changes implemented within the firmware prior to it being sold at retail.

I did this Beta firmware update and my computer was not finding the unknown device, so I found out that if you updated any other devices on your PC or Laptop, it shows up as that device. So for me, it was the Evercade. I had done an update on the Evercade just days prior to trying this Atari 2600+ update and that's what I selected as the Unknown Device and it worked. It fixed Pole Position 2, and more controllers are working properly now as is the A and B switches. 😊

@@jmogler It's much more likely that either the USB port or cable you're using are at fault than you have an anomalous Plus that can't be recognized. How have you verified that your cable passes both data & power?

weird, I have seen some people say they had that issue where they could not find their 2600+ under the Device Manager, and they said they continued with the process and it worked for some. You can attempt that if you like.@@jmogler

It's only useful if you already own dozens or hundreds of real 2600 carts. Otherwise there are many better ways to play old games on a modern TV.

That's actually a good point, you couldn't perform this update if your primary computing device is an iPad or Android tablet. What if you're a Mac user? I think there's a Mac version of the Gamestation Pro firmware installer, but I'm not sure about the 2600+.

No, what they need to do is get their firmware dialed in properly before they put their products out to market. It’s that simple. None of us should have to be updating these things by any means.

It's nearly the end of January. I'm surprised the full update is still NOT out yet. Whenever it does come out, I hope it adds compatibility with the driving controllers, the keyboard controllers and the video touch pad. Because right now they still do NOT work on the Atari 2600+. Also, the colors are still wrong on some of the games.

Does this update make it compatible for my large collection of atariage atari 7800 homebrew games? Would really like to be able to play my pacmanplus carts on my 2600+. Not being able to play the atariage 7800 homebrews is my only qualm with the 2600+. If theres a firmware update that can fix this issue, it would make the console much much better. Especially considering that the homebrew 7800 carts almost doubles the original library.

I'd recommend John Hancock's video on this firmware. He found several more (but not all) 7800 Homebrews are working.

I went on Atari Age to download these updates. These attachments are not available. They may have been removed or the person who shared it may have not had permission to share it on Atari Age. Looks like it was removed by Ben himself from Plaion. It was edited on January 1st. 😞😞😞😞 Need to do another video where to download these updates. I cant find them anywhere. Maybe it wasn't an official fix, I don't know. Ben's post was December 30, It was edited with the updated unavailable on January 1st.

Most likely your USB cable is power only, not power & data.

I can't get my PC to recognise the system - with B & W selected, and game select held down as the power is held down, there is no sound and nothing picked up by the OS. (Win 11.) Tried a normal USB 2/3 connection and a USB C connection. Is there an issue with Windows 11?

I did my video on Win11, so that's not the issue. Your description suggests the USB cable(s) you have tested are power-only and don't pass data.

They need to fix the jitteriness with the paddle controllers. They play flawlessly on the original 2600, but the emulator on the 2600+ handles them kinda weird. Genesis controllers don't seem to work either.

The jitter? No, not entirely. New chips in the 7800+ were used to address that.

I had the same problem. It turned out there was a minor problem with my account. Even though I had ordered from them previously, I had not set up a proper account with them. I went through the account setup process, and, even though there was a 24 hour verification process, I could proceed as “guest” and download the files. Best way to verify you have a proper account is to go ahead with the new account procedure. When I did, all files became available.

My copy of Pacman won't work 😢 I don't know whether I purchased a damaged cartridge or whether it's just the Atari 2600 Plus itself that won't allow it. Are you able to confirm if the game actually works? It says it's compatible on the list, but I'm just not sure.

Do you think it's indicative that Atari is focusing more on the GSP vs the 2600+? Or are updates just few and far between with this type of thing? Firstly, bonus points for the Hatbox Ghost avatar. 👻 I am surprised that a non-beta firmware hasn't been released yet. Once the beta went public, it seemed logical that we were days or weeks from a finalized version. There has been a beta 2, but otherwise going slower than I'd expected. Atari definitely isn't focusing on the GSP, though, because that's not their product (it's My Arcade's).

Happened to me before I scrubbed all the extraneous conflicting drivers from my instance of Windows. Do that or find another PC where you've never plugged in a consumer device like this before.

Thanks for watching. The process requires a PC, so Linux and Mac users will either need to hit up a PC friend for 10 minutes, or I've heard success stories of setting up a Windows VM. Sounds like more work than bugging a friend. 😀

Verified, once I had my account and was logged in downloading those files was no problem. Update went smoothly, although my Pitfall II cartridge still does not play. I think it might be bad. It just shows yellow and green stripes and buzzes. I don't have any other system to test it out on.

No worries. "Firmware" refers to the software which lives on the 2600+ and defines how it operates. An update to that firmware is intended to fix bugs or improve behavior of the hardware after it has already been shipped to consumers. If you're have no complaints about how your Plus operates, then you don't need this.

No, there's no internal storage, so all games must be cartridge based.

There aren't any games on the machine. The 2600+'s loader fetches an image from an inserted cartridge and then passes that to the Stella emulation engine to execute.

Definitely not mandatory. In fact, if you're satisfied with the current behavior of your 2600+, updating the firmware at all is entirely superfluous. This beta (and now, beta 2) are previews of changes & updates to the internal software of the Plus to address known issues.

@@GenXGrownUp well, I confirmed the firmware update to 1.1, however it still cannot play Burgertime, Robot Tank, or Pitfall 2, all of which work on my vintage Atari. Bummer!

This is probably my biggest issue with the gaming industry today. It’s lazy. No legitimate care or attention is put into “getting it right” prior to releasing products. Just put out firmware updates! It’s often the same with the movie industry. Just fix it in post! There’s no product pride anymore. Well, I buy far less today because of it. I refuse to chase firmware updates. I flat out refuse to update firmware. The product, as it’s released, is how the product will always be for me, and it will succeed or fail based on those merits alone.

@@GenXGrownUp BTW followed your instructions and did the Beta Firmware upgrade and it went off without a hitch. I didn't have to do the maneuver where you went into Device Manager. Probably because I had done a file-keep REFRESH on Windows 11 cuz the OS was acting really funky and that was the easiest way to get it back up and running while keeping all my old files. I just double clicked the driver install and it installed fine. I've actually done an update on my Arcade1up Ms Pacman cabinet to give it more features and it's pretty much the same kind of routine. Only issue I ever had was using a USB-C cable that wasn't data compatible so I had to get one off of Amazon. Since I have an XBOX elite controller hooked up to my My Arcade Gamestation, I was able to use that wire for the upgrade since it is also bidrectional data compatible. They fixed a bunch of things but neither Zippy the Porcupine nor Epic Adventure will run, but the difficulty switches are how they should be now. Hopefully things will improve with further updates. Hey all. This is beta firmware. I would not recommend installing it unless your up for multiple installs. I doubt the full firmware will be out in a week. Not sure where you got that from Jon. Is the week long timeframe your opinion or do you have direct knowledge? I've been following the forums on Atari Age and there are enough beta testers of the firmware at this point. There will but multiple changes before the final 1.1 firmware is released. I believe the full 1.1 firmware will be released in over a week but maybe less than a month. There are many great updates happening but they want this firmware to solve as many issues as possible and allow for a maximum number of games to be compatible. I have not installed the firmware as I plan on doing it once when it has been blessed as a release and not a beta.

Reminds me a lot of third party controllers and devices that need you to go through hoops and loops to update them. Atari needs a simple GUI to complete updates and not this jank. For bringing back the "simple game days" of old Atari, this update method isn't the right way forward.

quite possibly the WORST firmware updating program i have ever had the displeasure to use. It will quickly go from telling me ONE MASKROM FOUND to telling me "NO DEVICES FOUND" for $130 i expected more than this. Amazing how the ACTUAL hardware from the 80s can run games easily yet this modern mockery of the original hardware has trouble doing the same thing. Im done dicking around with this garbage firmware updating software, if it doesnt run something im plugging in my actual 2600 or 7800.
