The _Ghostbusters_ port reminds me of those modern "demakes" that people create to prove that something is technically feasible on a vintage system. Having owned the Commodore 64 game as a child, I didn't bother to check out the Atari 2600 version (and never imagined that it came so close).

Krull seems to be actually super faithful to the movie. Kind of ironic that it's one you haven't seen. Speaking of the first VHS tapes we owned... that's about as early as memories get for me, but I do recall that the parents adopted VHS really early and paid full price for Alien and Young Frankenstein, "full price" being $90 back then. I later realized this was probably what rental stores paid, with consumer purchases not yet on the radar. Those ended up being essentially the only tapes they ever bought. The way the character in King Kong flattens when he dies from falling reminded me of the 2600's Miner 2049er, so I just had to investigate. Although I can't find programming credits for Miner 2049er, they were published by the same entity (Tigervision) so it's a near certainty the same guy (Karl T. Olinger) was responsible. The character in both games moves ridiculously slowly as well, and looks about the same too. It was the same author. It's more than a _little_ ironic that King Kong actually takes a stab at reproducing Donkey Kong's BGM, while the official DK port has no music at all.

Ahhh! Memories! Thanks for this video, and please do some sequels, as there are quite a few more movies to video games. I did have Ghostbusters for the 2600, and I remember buying Krull from Toys R Us for a record low $2.99. And I had the disappointing 007 game. I remember seeing an ad for the 007 game, where there was a James Bond figure (who looked like Pitfall Harry without the hat) on top of a speeding train. Now THAT was the 007 game I wanted!

The Krull arcade version was pretty good. I'm not surprised the Atari port was good as well since it was built on a solid foundation. Tron: Deadly Disc, best ever, yes it's repetitive, but captured the part of the movie perfectly. I played Ghostbusters obsessively, racking up tons on dollars by playing the game over and over. I also had MASH, which might have been based off the TV show, but that's based off of the movie. James Bond on the 5200 was more of a complete game. Great video. Thanks for making it.

I highly recommend watching Krull!!! It's a great movie. And the game is pretty accurate to the plot, though leaving a lot out. Sort of. It's a sci-fi Fantasy movie (think Star Wars meets Excalibur). Featuring very young Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane as side characters. Prince Colwyn and Princess Lyssa are set to marry. When she's kidnapped by The Beasts knights (called Slayers). The Beast lives in The Black Fortress, which changes location every day. Which is why the secret location changes when the sun sets in the game. It's also fairly fitting that the Spider web is the hardest part of the game, because a trip to The Widow of the Web is definitely always fatal for someone. Colwyn teams up with wizards, rogues, a cyclops and other traveling companions (very D&D) to slay The Beast. He needs a magic weapon called The Glaive to fight his way through The Beast's inner sanctum and fight the Beast itself. The horses are "Fire Mares". Horses so fast that they set the ground ablaze and can temporarily fly. The only creatures fast enough to travel to the Black Fortress before it relocates.

Krull is impressively good game on the 2600. While most 2600 games require reading the manual to make sense of what is going on (and not reading the manual is why most newer gamers dismiss 2600 games as "unplayable" or "stupid"), Krull is the one game where I'd say seeing the movie it is based on is mandatory. The game really does follow the plot of the movie, so watching it gives proper context to all the gameplay. Watch the movie, then play the game again.

Megaforce might be the most baffling considering how big of a flop the movie was. The Entity never got past the prototype stage probably because of the film's subject matter. Fox was also involved with both by the way.

Glad to see you cover these, most people just do a standard negative review thing for these since they're 2600 and licensed video games. ;) Go watch Krull man, it's the streaming age, YT even has a channel for movies. If you watch it the game levels of the game take on a new light "I remember that scene.", but you seem to be having fun interpreting the graphics. ^_^ Actually quite an accurate adaption when you consider all the factors Ie. usually such games make you go "This is nothing like the movie!". Although I think the 5200 Gremlins is better the 2600 one has it's own charm, graphically it certainly uses all the functions fully to dress things up on 2600. GB2600 is the only version of that game I want to own, it's nothing special on other platforms but impressively complex on the 2600. Personally I think Crane's original game Car Wars would have been better though. FV is another excellent adaption of a film story into a game, you're doing exactly what you want to be doing. Actually just saw a copy but couldn't remember if it was good, think I'll go pick it up now. ;) Also worth noting, Universal didn't actually own King Kong so they were spending money on lawyers to aid the actual owner of KK. 9_9 Certainly enough eye candy in 007 but yeah it would nice if the gameplay actually works. :S

IMO the best "movie" games are those made years after the movie. Most are rushed to market so obviously everything that can go wrong will. Psygnosis did some ok ones just re-skinning it's "Shadow of the Beast" games. The Epic James bond game for N64 was years between the movies. That Fantastic Voyage game while similar to Vanguard looks pretty innovative and again it's from a 50s/60s movie.
