Different sizes of paddles might be a result of different position of difficulty toggle switches on the two consoles.
@kestersforest

Ha. Hadn’t thought of that. 😂
@unicyclematt
@unicyclematt Жыл бұрын
In addition, the difficulty switches have been implemented inversely in the 2600+! So difficulty 'a' on an original console = difficulty 'b' on the 2600+. Maybe a firmware update will correct this in the future

That's a pretty crazy thing for them to get wrong... anyone with real cartridges with manuals is going to get confused, and some games like Space Shuttle or Riddle of the Sphinx that use the difficulty switches for controls will be harder to play...@@unicyclematt

@@shawnmulligan3471 you're right. it's shameful. but they did. And they didn't test any PAL games either on 7800. But... people are working on it, which is good.

The flicker is related to total amount of sprites on screen - seems 1 sprite + character sprite is allowed at any one time. 2 sprites means they need to flicker/alternate display each one - 3....as you can see they need to flip between all 3. Stairs, enemies and obstacles are made as sprites.

Lucky you. I’m still waiting on mine that I pre-ordered as SOON as it was possible. Supposed to ship on the 17th and now sometime first week of December. Not a happy camper.

I think the new games are NTSC. If you try to run them on a original PAL console the colours won't be as intended

That did cross my mind. Although in the past when I tried playing an ntsc cartridge it just didn’t work at all. I’ll look into it. My sizer does have a tendency to be a bit flaky when it comes to that. He interested to know if other have the same

“Well-worn” OG Atari joysticks’ rubber stick covers had come loose from the base *at least* dozens of hours earlier - and is likely lost, after trying to play it with the cover on, by squeezing it to grip onto the stick mechanism, but getting too frustrated with it falling all over the place not to have rage-flung it somewhere, behind something... Your OG joystick is in great shape!

A great review. This is the first video of yours I’ve watched and I really like your presentation style. You go into detail yet at the same time the video is snappy and doesn’t linger too long on one aspect. I’ve subscribed and look forward to watching your future output.

I only want one of these to use as a Retropie Box. It's a really beautiful design which I love that they have shrunk it down a little bit - and I want it on my shelf. But 100 quid is a bit much to pay for that so I'll keep my eye on eBay. Hopefully they don't become a rare collectors item.

I'm sure you'll be able to get it on sale in a few months. Its going to have limited appeal even though I love it. If you do this (which I think is a great idea BTW) then make sure you hook up that LED logo on the front. :-)

My wife played frostbite for the first time in years last night and immediately got almost 200,000 points 😮 I had a similar issue with paddles. They work great on a real 2600 but really jittery on the plus

Kaboom uses the difficulty switches to change the bucket size. Lots of games utilized the difficulty switches for various things. Does the 2600+ have the switches? It looks like it does since it looked like a heavy sixer.
@Pocket_Fox
@Pocket_Fox 10 ай бұрын
It does. It's on the backside of the console, just like the 4:3/16:9 switch. I'm told there is a firmware issue with the switch were the effects are flipped. So the switch is supposedly backwards for some games. I think it was fixed in a firmware update.

Im on the fence about this tbh. I might pick one up but I am a bit disappointed in the loading times and some games won't actually work on it. That might get sorted in a firmware update? I think the colour issues might be a PAL/NTSC issue but I can't be sure!?
@autofire666

Hi. Thanks for the video. Interesting to see difference in Kaboom (could be because of difficulty switch being on easy? Hence bigger?). In relation to the flickering, if you read Retro Gamer Atari 2600+ issue recent number they explain why it flickers. In relation to Berzerk, little correction, you could/can shoot diagonally but enemies couldn't in original, enhanced version allows enemies to shoot at you diagonally, and have the voice. I probably will buy this version too but will think about Run and Jump :) To add I also have an original 2600 but got this one for xmas (early present haha) Many thanks /GRooBY

@kestersforest Жыл бұрын
I think it depends. The stick I’m using in the video is actually a Sega stick but it’s third party. It has two buttons. I did hear that the Megadrive controllers are a little dodgy
@shawnmulligan3471
@shawnmulligan3471 Жыл бұрын
It should work with any controller that works "as a standard controller" on a regular 2600. The pinout on the controller cable is VERY simple (mostly there's a pin for power/ground, and then a pin for each of 4 directions, and the button and the two paddle positions). Any 3rd party controller that works with normal Atari games will work fine with it because the emulator needs to read it the same way as a real 2600 to work with the controller it comes with. The concern I have, and I suspect it doesn't work and haven't seen any articles or videos with anyone trying, is that any controllers that have a more complicated layout, like that use a shift register or matrix, or unusual analog inputs (Star Raiders, BASIC controller, driving paddles for Indy 500) probably don't work, and probably can't be made to work via a firmware update (a firmware update MIGHT be able to add functionality for this but I think it's difficult from a software perspective and they won't bother).

I don't understand the appeal of the 2600+. It's essentially an emulator running on a modern LCD TV, except with your original cartridges and 9-pin joysticks? Sorry, I'll use my original hardware 2600 on my CRT TV set. The only enhancement I'd take is a composite mod rather than RF-video.

The Atari was released in 1977, while the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum didn't come out until 1982. Now try telling a 7 year old, "I know you want the latest gaming console for your birthday this year, but if you just wait 5 years or more, we'll get you a gaming console with MUCH better graphics!" and see how agreeable they are to waiting.

Not only was the Spectrum released 5 years later, only a year before the video game crash in the US, it didn't come out in the US (except as a Timex/Sinclair variant that isn't compatible with any of the UK games). The C64 also came out 5 years later. Pet (and maybe VIC-20), Apple II, TRS-80, but they cost hundreds to thousands of dollars more - a disk drive for any of those systems cost as much as two Atari VCS systems.

It didn't, and kids didn't care; they had no frame of reference. Kids in the early 80's didn't have any way to know about alternatives they didn't have access to. They might know it didn't compare to some of the newer arcade games if they were old enough, but Atari games usually PLAYED fine, and having something on your TV that you just watched cartoons on, that responded to what you did in real time was a novel idea. For most families in the early 80's, an Atari VCS would have been the most advanced computer in their house. @@papalaz4444244
