I really hopes it sells well so other companies do similar releases. Would love a large Sega Dreamcast collection with all their commercials and interviews about their last days in the hardware business.

Absolutely. Offer something so good, just having the games emulated is trite by comparison. This is way way better than collecting and playing the Roms. This package does so much to support the game itself and gives you way more information into how they work as well. Add in certain enhanced games where they literally had to go in and improve the code for Quality of Life improvements while preserving the original game in it.

Ironically enough my favorite classic game anthology ever is Activision Anthology for PS2, not only did you get every single amazing Activision game on Atari 2600 you got manual scans, patches, TV commercials, and even full on licensed 80s music including the Safety Dance to play in the background as you played the games. For something on the PS2 it had an amazing amount of polish on it.

I'm also only near the end of the second section (the early 2600 games), but this collection is just amazing. It encourages you to actually play every single game offered as you go through the history, which is an achievement on its own. As for my favorite history tidbit featured in it so far, it would have to be the coupon for "One Free Turkey" that Atari gave Rob Fulop for Missile Command's 2600 port being a million seller, which lead to Fulop leaving Atari & co-founding Imagic. The fact that Digital Eclipse somehow got a hold of that coupon, or at least a photo of it, is amazing.

As someone who just got obsessed with the Atari Jaguar I have MUCH respect that this includes ALL the main Atari systems including the obscure 5200, 7800, Lynx and much derided Jaguar that has some hidden gems. Rereleasing easily accessable things is not nearly as needed as rare, expensive things and the lesser known Ataris can have some suprisingly good games.

I picked up the Atari 50 celebration o PS5 and its one of my favourite games for that system. It's the gold standard for how these collections should be presented going forward, a great selection of games and the reimagined games are very good such as Haunted House. It's brilliant

I might check this Atart 50 thing out. I grew up on the Atari 2600 as my first console as a little kid so this is pretty interesting to me. That console got destroyed by water though so it makes me sad that it couldn't be repaired. So maybe I can revisit some games that I remember from back then.

It seems like it's only beginning to dawn on people that technology, and the history of it should be retained and documented as part of our culture. Imagine if it was possible to watch the great inventors of our time discuss their work! We have the capability to do that now, and I'm happy to see it being given the context and gravity that it deserves in this collection. It's a shame that some of the people who worked on these (and other) games are no longer with us, but I'm happy that there's work being done now to remember them, their contributions, and to hopefully preserve that part of our history for future generations.

It's funny because although the Atari VCS is now 50 years, many kids around my age (40-45 and probably younger kids) grew up with it in Mexico. Since imports weren't as easy or cheap back then, consoles found a way around the country; some from people that brought them from USA and crossed the border, some from what we called "fayuca" (counterfeit and illegally imported goods that came from ships that arrived at ports in the Gulf of Mexico) and some legal and expensive imports too by large stores. In my hometown there were some original VCS that lasted for a while, since we lived too far away from big cities and modern tech took a while to arrive until the late 80s when imports became more common.

What I really appreciate about this collection is that it also includes the less popular Atari systems, such as the Lynx and Jaguar. I can finally play Atari Karts without spending loads of money and having to use a Jaguar controller. I always adore when collections don't just trot out the usual popular games, but also include lesser-known and now-expensive games/consoles like what the Mega Drive 2 did with the Mega CD. Not only is that great value, but it also increases the appeal to newer audiences like me who grew up with more recent consoles. It would be like if Nintendo stopped drying the NES well and started making their arcade games more available (which they did with the Switch, loved playing VS SMB on it) or did proper non-HD re-releases of their now-expensive GameCube catalogue. More collections need to do things like that- more eras, more obscure hidden gems instead of the been-there-done-that classics all the time, more of a genre range, more consoles to pick from, just anything that would add more variety and make customers feel like they're not being cheaply taken advantage of by nostalgia. Actual effort.

Honestly, the 2600 Pac-Man port was pretty much what you should expect of a Pac-Man port on the 2600. When I first played it, I thought, "Well this isn't the arcade original but then again, of course it isn't," The 2600 port of Ms. Pac-Man, however, went above and beyond that expectation.

I would pay actual money for Nintendo to release a "Black Box Collection", warts and all, much in the same style as that Atari collection. While there's no shortage of games for the NES that can be assembled into worthwhile collections, those original games are such an interesting representation of what is essentially the rebirth of the industry in North America.

I can't think of anything from Digital Eclipse that has disappointed me, but they went above & beyond with this release. I do wish the PSP evolved versions of "Asteroids" & "Super Breakout" was included, but it really is hard to complain considering all we do get. Now if only SEGA would do something similar to this & include such forgotten games as "N-Sub" "Pulsar" "Twin Squash" "Tranquillizer Gun" "Carnival" & of course all 7 ( yes 7 ) vector games including "Battle Star" & "Zip/Zap" ( a working prototype of "Zektor" ). Let's hope it happens.

Kinda bummed that Computer Space wasn't made playable. (Pat refers to it as "Space Duel" which is a later game and IS playable.) Ditto for silly stuff like "Gotcha!" and the original "Tank" (released under the Key Games brand for business reasons.) The earliest Sprint arcade game that's playable is Sprint 8...but at least it's in there. While I'm complaining, it would have been great to see "pinMAME"-style simulations of the Atari pinball machines, since I'm pretty sure at least some of them are already available unofficially. All in all - and I say this as a person who makes a point of buying emulation collections, starting with the Williams Arcade Classics collection on the PC in 1996 - kind of a missed opportunity in some ways. This is a fine compilation/history lesson, but it's only just about as good as some of the previous Atari collections.

It’s a shame that this collection doesn’t have any Activision games - it would have been interesting to add this to the documentary part - as the people who created Activision used to work for Atari - and left the business because they were angry that Atari never gave them credit for the games they created. Activision went on to make some of the best ever games for the Atari 2600. And now they are one of the biggest game companies in the world - Activision’s success and history is completely intertwined with Atari thanks to Atari’s refusal to recognize their developers work.

I won't deny that they put a huge amount of effort into this and it shows, and also that the history portion starts off well, (although funny enough ends up feeling like a Video Game Years Atari Collection) but the bottom line is that this is a game collection. Ultimately, if you didn't like Atari games to begin with, this isn't going to change your mind. Not to mention just like the last 3 Atari collections, some of the game choices on here are of questionable quality. However if you love Atari, yes this is the best collection for it ever made... So much so that it could never be outdone, even if they made a second one with the same team.
