I'm holding off this time. i did buy a 2600+ and had been impressed with it. But like a lot of stuff, I ended up putting in back in its box and on the shelf while I continue to break out my actual 7800 to play games on. For me the loading process delay just reminds me on these consoles that I'm playing an emulator and I can do that just as easily on my PC and still have it load up quicker. But for those that don't have these consoles already and are curious to know what it was about. Then yes, I think this is a very good way to get into the 7800 and experience it. Petscii Robots sounds like another excellent 7800 game that isn't likely to ever get support either. It can be made to work as I've got a FW on my 2600+ that can play the game, but it required having to replicate some of the games assets directly into the FW to do it and there are complications with Atari doing that on anything official it would seem.
@TheAtariNetwork2 ай бұрын
@@IvoryTowerCollections some excellent points Crossbow. I have heard people say the delay kills the experience for them. I don't mind it but it does affirm that you're emulating. I think of the 2600+ as a 7800+ in a different shell and not the other way :) I mean, the 2600+ is a 7800 disguised in a 2600 shell. I assume since the 2600 is a much stronger brand than the 7800, that's why we saw the 2600+ first. The 2600+ sales must have done well and that's why there's now the 7800+. This is what I believe. I hope it leads to more Atari hardware products. More than the hardware (which I haven't bought any outside of the VCS) I was very excited to see Bounty Bob. I immediately preordered it. I'm ok with Frenzy and Berzerk being split into two products. I have A LOT of questions about this....and I haven't done one iota of research beyond seeing the advertisement and reading the initial response on Atari Age. I haven't even finished the video, but I had to get my hot take in here! First of all...is this just a reskinned 2600+ with the official firmware updated? If so, I have a real problem with that. They basically have abandoned the 2600+ despite it being very popular with folks like us (as opposed to the GSP or whatever). No official firmware updates AT ALL and beyond the original three rereleases, no other new games. So now I'm supposed to buy ANOTHER system that has the firmware update I had to manually put on the 2600+ ? What?? The advertisement indicates that some of the new games are for the 2600+ and some are for the 7800+ only...and if that's true I have a big problem there as well. You are telling me that the 2600+ can play 7800 games...but only some? And if that's true, why not just patch it with a firmware update so that it can? I know there are certain homebrews that don't work but those are a very small minority of games. I just don't like the feel here....this feels like a cash grab straight up. That coupled with their propensity for focusing on extremely expensive (in my opinion) merch and the piss poor state of the VCS support, I'm losing faith in Atari. Not that they won't continue to put out cool content and games, but they sure seem not to give a F**K about customers and their money. " Spent $130 on the 2600+ ?? YOU DUMBASS...we'll allow you to fix this mistake by purchasing the 7800+ instead!!" Anyway, now I'll finish the video and probably delete my comment once I realize you cover all of this.

@@fensthespook we can address all this. So there could still be official 2600 plus firmware updates. I haven't read anywhere that they said there wouldn't be. As for the games they are all forward and backward compatible. So anything that works on the 2600+ will work on the 7800+ and vice versa. For all intents and purposes they are the same console. 2600+ in a different shell. Pretty disappointing.

Forgive my ignorant questions, but does this mean: 1-The Bentley Bear game be available to purchase separately? 2-And the Bentley Bear game will work on the 2600+ since it’s the same essential hardware?

I haven’t even seen the video, I already know it’s a cash grab. This is a repackaged 2600+. A product a day keeps there employees with pay, I’m joking, they don’t pay there employees.

It seems too similar to the 2600+ that it makes little difference to me which one to purchase if at all, so hopefully we'll learn more as we get closer to its physical release.

@@RayPruitt-ji9jx I think that's what people are missing. It can play the same games as the 2600 plus. It's not a replacement or a different console, it's the same console for people who want the aesthetic. It's like having different versions of the Xbox like Star wars, halo, etc. It's all the same console they just look a bit different.

Well technically it's always a cash grab when it comes to all companies that are for profit.

@@madmax2069 I still play with my 1977 Atari 2600! What makes you think they will have the proprietary battery available in 47 plus years?

Same here! I am not a wireless fan whatsoever. Give me wired, too!

@@tarstarkusz dude, it's a battery, you can easily modify to work, if it's using lithium it's not going to be as proprietary as you think, lithium batteries largely use the same voltage ranges. So it wouldn't really be that hard to replace said battery.

Time to cut the crap and give us an Atari ST and Falcon mini. They can keep the Jaguar.

Nintendo offered Atari a chance to produce the NES in the states & they declined. They said video games are over. NES became a big hit! In a panic Atari who had the 7800 in the back burner, but canceled it, quickly rushed the 7800 to market to compete with the NES. 7800 It flopped! My point is that the 7800 is not worthy of this plus system. The games feel rushed. They're bad. The fact the ad calls it "iconic" is insulting. The Atari 5200 should be getting an Atari 5200+ release before the 7800. It has better quality games and great arcade ports. Atari could also re-release the crappy controllers, but now have them work well. A chance to redeem the Atari 5200. I'm not happy how Atari keeps neglecting the Atari 5200. No, the Atari 400 mini is not worthy tribute of the 5200. I don't care if the hardware is the same. I grew up with the 5200. I'm nostalgic for it.
@TheAtariNetwork2 ай бұрын
@@OrionsAngel for many of us the 7800 is iconic. I grew up with one and I love the design. As far as Atari not releasing the NES, it's meh. They already had the 7800 and Nintendo was an arcade company at the time. Hindsight is always 50/50. It sounds like this product isn't for you
@OrionsAngel2 ай бұрын
@@TheAtariNetwork I mean I'm sure that's the case. I just don't think we should have received an Atari 5200+ before a 7800+ Go in order of release. Skipping a whole Atari console makes it seem like Atari neglects the 5200.

Lets be real here. CFW will happen and break this system wide open just like anything else. It'll be able to play everything Atari has ever made.
@madmax20692 ай бұрын
Well to a certain extent, you are still limited on how much you can emulate due to the SOC that's used. I doubt you'll be able to emulation many arcade games, and then there are a selection of homebrew that will probably never run.
