Xevious is very very difficult. I had it on NES as a kid in the 80’s. While I didn’t have too much trouble with most games either beating or coming very close too. Xevious gave me the straight up fits. You know with most games especially platformers rpg’s etc it was about the time you invested. Xevious was exhausting, I was always up for the challenge (sometimes lol) I remember the feeling of just getting to the 2nd stage or even the 3rd 😂. I never beat it, perhaps one day I will, perhaps.

Uhg, Fighting Golf for NES was false advertizing! that race game looks really nice too, and that inside view of the car is really neat! the only 7800 games I have rn are Pole Position II, and the Artillary Duel/Chuck Norria double end cart, I mainly use the console to play 2600 games on, since I wasn't able to find any 7800 carts back in the day.

Credit to whoever's wearing the Atari cloak these days - they're still trying. Are they timeless? no; they're a business using a limited number of IP's most of which are over 40 years old and trying to make money with what they've got. The new games based on the old ones look pretty decent IMO (and I think the shift they did with Yars deserves some appreciation - who under the age of 50 will even know or care what yars revenge was and how does a platformer in the series spoil that?), and I don't see an issue with using anime style graphics (the word 'atari' is Japanese after all).

I personally would have gone more old school in the case of a Yars game. I wonder what Howard Scott Warshaw , the original creator of Yars would think. It was such a unique game about a mutant fly of all things. Howard was such a tortured soul with negativity surrounding E.T. I would think they would wanted to do more with an iconic game. I could see some use of anime. Of course I can see trying to appeal to a younger generation. But I think it can be done in a better way to harken back to a purer style of Atari. After all Minecraft is very popular with many age groups, but looks more pixelated. We already have Berzerk Recharged which is not real reflection of the original. I don’t want to just see vintage names thrown around, without a legacy to them.

After having played the demo at NextFest this year, I honestly think that the problem with Yars Rising is that it's just a bad genre/gameplay fit. WayForward games is known for doing the kinds of games that Rising is, and I can definitely say after having played it that it IS a pretty standard WayForward platformer with an Atari coat of paint slathered on it, regardless of the overall visual aesthetic being provided. If I'm being totally honest, even though I didn't personally have a good time with the game and think that it wasn't very fun to play, I'm glad that the current Atari is allowing independent developers to have access to their library of IPs to experiment with while they just act as the publisher/rights holder. Atari is not the same entity that it was when it amassed most of its old guard audience. Hell, it's not even the same entity that it was when I was a kid in the late 90s and early 2000s, that was Hasbro. I think that the current entity to bear the name has landed on a reasonable venture that works without being too over the top, and while there will obviously be missteps because not everyone is going to see the same thing when presented with one of the company's IPs, I don't think that it's going to be ruinous.

It is a difficult balance, trying to innovate while remaining meaningfully recognizable enough to classic IP. Like many have said in the comments, and you also said in the video, most would applaud Atari's attempts to try something new or try to broaden its appeal. I applaud Atari as well. With regards to this new Yars game, it looks too generic. I agree with you that the art style is simply like many other games on the market. I think the Yars property could have been better utilized to make the game more recognizable (beyond in name and some in game mini games) while embracing modern aesthetics. I would have loved to have seen a humanoid protagonist design based on Yar (it's difficult to identify with a "fly") and develop Yar much as Nintendo has done with Mario is so common these days. Edit: “…is so common these days” was supposed to be “Girl protagonists are so common these days.” Not sure what happened 😆 I get that this isn't a game in the Recharged series, and that affords more creative freedom to the game and art designers. Kudos to Atari for trying. Keep going.

IMO, the Yars Rising trailer surprised the hell out of me. I thought about the bright neon of Yars: Recharged and how taking a spaceship shooter and turning it into an anime metroidvania felt... wrong? At the same time, Atari has been buying up old/retro IPs and I do think it's smart to offer up those IPs to smaller devs so they can do wild, unexpected things with them. Sure, it's a bit of the old throwing spaghetti at the wall, but *only* targeting an aging demographic isn't *growing* their audience either. My initial impression is the Yars IP was a bad fit for this style of game -- but maybe we'll be surprised when it comes out.

Honestly it would be bad for Atari if they are forced to keep a certain "style" in all there games, this could cause restriction in ideas and creativity and can lead to stagnation. I can appreciate Atari for the experimentation with these new games and if it brings awareness of Atari to new players then it is a success as Atari does need to expand it's audience along with caring for those who have grew up with Atari. Yar's Rising screams Wayforward so I don't see that as a new standard but it does show they are trying out new genres in existing IP's and the story could end up leading into what older Yar's fans know about the series. Plus the original Yar's exists in the form of mini games so new players who enjoy Rising could decide to try out the previous Yar's games which introduces them into the more classic Atari.

I actually don’t mind Atari to experiment more with their core franchises like this. Like how Namco & Tetris handle their IPs. For example, you can still have a game more faithful to the original arcade title, like Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, and have something completely different like Pac-Man World. Tetris would be pretty stale if they didn't experiment with games like Tetris 99, Tetris Effect, Puyo Puyo Tetris, etc.

Fair complaints, but as an 80's Atari fan, I was humming the Robotech battle theme while playing Defender. Besides, Atari, with a stylized Mount Fuji symbol, always represented a Western crush on Japanese culture. This Yar game reminds me of Prismacolor pencils and sketchbooks and indie comics and toys that had 1 season of commercials on channels you could barely see. It's the kind of thing I would have killed for, back in the day. Also, ironic claiming Yar's has no backstory. The comic and the theme song single say otherwise.

The whole premise of the video is "wrong" Atari doesn't exist and hasn't existed in decades. While I cannot really say anything about modern anime graphics, old "Actual Atari" embraced new technology as it came along. Atari is a stylized font and logo and some IP. Even if Atari hadn't folded and been sold every few years, it still wouldn't be 80s Atari. Just as Chevy isn't the Chevy of the 1950s or even the 80s. There is probably less than 20 people working for Chevrolet today who worked in Chevrolet in 1980. It's a different company even though it never ceased. There simply are not enough 50somethings who want to buy essentially skinned versions of our beloved 80s classics. Whether we like it or not, the people wearing the Atari skinsuit need a younger generation of people or it will fail.

@@TheAtariNetwork I understand my view that Atari doesn't exist is unpopular, but it is true. Atari was broken up and sold off in the 80s. The 2600 part became Commodore with Jack owning it. Then it got sold off a few times before Hasbro got it. I think it got sold off again, not the company, mind you, but the IP. A company is more than its legacy products and its name and logo. It's a company culture. It's a management and marketing style. More than anything, it's the people who work there. There is not a single person who works for "Atari" today who was involved with the 2600 at Atari. As for the games, they changed. We don't like it, but they changed a long time ago. One thing you probably didn't notice, but I certainly did was the games you showed were loaded up with diversity, a plague on all modern games. My point is they cannot not exist in the modern era.

When Atari released their own games they were made by in-house developers who didn't get paid sh1t and got no royalties for the games they made (sometimes single handedly) . Now they're made by independent developers who have the potential to be properly compensated for their work. Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Zers love anime so that's a good move. What I REALLY want to see will NEVER happen but I would love to see new Atari hardware (that isn't an over priced PC) I would love to an Atari computer running a RISC-V chip and sold at the same price or thereabouts as Raspberry Pi 400 (wedge case Raspberry Pi). I just doubt that new hardware of any sort would be able to compete and would be a money sink. The nostalgia route is the safe route. It's too hard to break in and too late for there to be a future in it. The kids love anime but I doubt they'll care about anime from Atari. I think their best bet is to focus on quality and fun. Anime is cheap, looks good for new comers, and most importantly cheap. Yars’ rising gameplay actually looks fun, and most likely takes place years after the events of revenge. After the excellent Atari 50 was released, I felt like it was time to turn the page and look to the future. Of course they can do this while still giving us the oldies but goodies at the same time, especially with hardware (2600 +, 400 mini).

Moving forward is definitely a must but I feel like there's ways to do it that are respectful to the source material. I was hesitant to give Lunar Lander Beyond a chance because of its style but I love it. But I love it for the gameplay, the story does nothing for me honestly. But we can be friends, hopefully you can still enjoy my content and we can disagree on certain things. The idea that people have to agree on everything these days is just crazy to me. And boring honestly. Thanks for all the support!

I think Atari is doing a pretty good job as of late . At the very least their name is relevant again .

I agree they have been doing awesome. But that's why I think it's important to discuss if they are potentially making a misstep here. Lunar Lander Beyond is fantastic, I'm live streaming it all week, but I think Yars Rising is potentially much worse just at its core. But we'll have to wait and see...

I disagree. Not only does Atari not exist, the people wearing the Atari skinsuit send out cartridges with the PCB in backwards so it doesn't function. This is absolutely inexcusable. These things sell in such low numbers they could have 1 guy testing them. How long would it take for a guy on the assembly line to plug each cartridge into a 2600 or a test jig and turn it on and see if it works? Especially considering the price!!! They could pay a chinese worker 20 yuan an hour (2.80) to do this. These things are like over 100 Dollars. Atari is like our youth. It exists only in our minds.

@@tarstarkusz They could step up the quality control ,but it's still nice to see Atari making some moves . Hopefully as they get support things will get better .

My problem isnt anime, its the "fake anime" style the art looks generic. If they would go full stylized anime it would be okay. But the art is as if A.I made it for Temu. Also i love wayfoward and what i do not understand is wayforward usually has its own distinct style, but in the yars game they ditched there own 16-bit style in favor of this "style". Plus lets be real the yars rising game is "dollar general metroid dread" . Dont get me wrong i love metroid, but this is a blatent rip off of metroid dread. Also why yars? Why not Trevor McFur, or some other jaguar property, yars just doesnt match. If it was a shoot em up i could see it but a metroid clone? Anyway great video keep it up!🎉🎉🎉🎉

Oh that's an incredible thought. If this was a Trevor Mcfur game I would be ecstatic about it. But I hold Yars in high regard. And I think most people find that weird because it's a simple game and a franchise that doesn't have a deep lore. Well it does but you really have to dig for it. Regardless these are fantastic points Ramey! Thank you!
