The atari xe gs even puts the atari 7800 into shame with it’s more and huge more enhanced library of games. The atari 7800 is actually an obsolete system since most games are also on the atari xe gs system. I definitely love my atari xe gs system, it might be even a much cooler system then the nes itself. Through i do also own a atari 7800 wich is a cool cultclass system in it’s own right😁

E.T. should have been a bicycle-chase action game. Little kids couldn't play the 2600 version, and saying they should RTFM is not realistic. A few years later we got Paperboy at the arcade, a bicycle game.

I wound up with this game when I ended up with a Atari Computer Bundle (2 130 XE's, 2 400's and a XEGS with game cartridges, floppies and what not) from a local pawn shop a few weeks back... I was dreading for a bit that it was just gonna be a 2600 port but with better graphics, but I was pleasantly surprised that this game didn't suck honestly, and agree that it's honestly pretty good

The graphics are at least better then the 2600 version. Sure the audio is boring but hearing that robot voice is technically impressive giving that the atari 400 lacks a pcm channel. But even so, i don’t think this game would,ve prevented the game crash of 1983 if it did got more attention. But i still think that atari did realize that their 2600 version of et was really bad due a tight line to those developers.

I always steered clear of the A8 version of E.T. due to the 2600 version, and often I've forgotten that it was even a thing. It sounds like an "OK" game, not great, not terrible. I may give it a chance one of these days, although I don't imagine it to have much long-term playability.

it's a shame that version wasn't more famous, it seem to have flaw but look like to be as well a hidden gem of the atari 800 and could have deserved to have more posterity and some adaptation/"remaster" on other machines.

I only played the arcade version a couple of times though, and don't remember what additional features it had other than multiple levels. I appreciate the reminder that this exists. I'm going to have to go dig it up and play again. One tiny, pedantic FYI: Your helicopter isn't a "sortie" (even though Broderbund's description in the manual states that your helicopter was smuggled in disguised as a mail sorting machine). A sortie is a military term for a trip into enemy territory.

I don't understand why its so hard to make a modern version of Yars' Revenge without messing up the art style and concept. Its not like there isn't material (such as the Atari record.) This game is unrecognizable as a Yars' game at glance and seems to have barely anything to do with it. It feels like an original game with Yars' Revenge thrown in as a bonus minigame, and I think it would have been all the better if that's what it had been.

I’m apparently one of the few who got one of these and had it work. At the time they said 50k units shipped - I had no idea how few of those sold, so my pre-order puts me in some kind of elite club apparently. The main draw for me was Iron Soldier 2 and to a lesser degree Battlemorph, but I don’t think I ever owned that because I sold my Jag stuff in one go on eBay after I got my PlayStation once I saw I could get a version of Tempest 2000 for it (I think it was called Tempest X3?). I had built an arcade stick with Defender-style button layout to play Defender 2000 and with the help of a friend and instructions from the internet made a spinner for Tempest 2000 using a 2600 driving controller and lead fishing sinkers. I agree that the few decent games did not make the JagCD worthwhile, but the VLM was very cool and I spend a stupid amount of time playing Vid Grid and waiting for Iron Soldier 2 to come out. Spoonman remains one if my fave Soundgarden tunes as a result 😂. It was kinda neat being there at the end, but man Atari made so many mistakes with that system. Lack of dev support was one Sony would repeat with the PS3, but Atari didn’t have the success of PS1 and PS2 to have such hubris. Just a sad slow motion car crash at the end. Watching them sell out their IP to a hard drive company I’d never heard of was tragic. So glad Infogrames is doing the plus line, putting in some effort at quality and playing to the strongest era of Atari’s past. I don’t know if they’ll ever try to compete with Sony again, but I’m happy with what they’re doing now - hopefully they can avoid the mistakes of the past!
