I reckon it's a software sprite routine. Sprites are small and monochrome, so there's more scope to speed things up.

i think this is using 4 player missiles(not sprites), did a routine like this many years ago.

I counted 32 sprites. Is this 30 FPS, 60 FPS or a higher or lower framerate? I can't really tell, since youtube runs kinda slowly on my machine. If this is in 30 FPS, then I would guess about 3060 sprites per second. If it's 60 FPS, then that would be about 6120 SPS. either way, this is flipping incredible.

If it was PMGs, surely you'd get massive flicker when there were more than 4 objects per line?

Idea: Use priority 0 and have 4 color grayscale. Then overlay sprites to get color.
