Atari was the leader in vector graphics games. Always loved playing them in the arcades. The 3-D playfields and sprites combined with the razor sharp lines generated by the vector graphics made these games outstanding. Thanks for rescuing, restoring, and sharing them with us my friend, great stuff!

An interesting fact about this game is that it inspired Sid Meier and Bill Stealey to found MicroProse. Most people now are more familiar with Pirates!, Railroad Tycoon, and Civilization, but MicroProse started with combat sims and wargames.

Must have been a real trip playing this in the early 80s. Way ahead of its time.

Great Review ! This is way more fun than Battlezone and just as technically impressive. It is a real shame this one is not as well known.

LOVED this game in the 1982-1985 era. Only one arcade in the local area had it and I used to drive there with my newly minted junior license to play thisa game...

I have this and Battle Zone on "ATARI: The 80 Classic Games (PC Version)". Originally, I bought "Atari: Anniversary Edition", but then sold it because the one I got now has the same games, and more (especially the Atari 2600 games). I don't recall seeing Red Baron in an arcade. MAYBE I've seen it at one time or another. But I have played Battle Zone. I can manage to play the games on my PC using the arrow keys, even though they're not like the arcade controls.

This was my favorite arcade game in college, and I fed her many quarters earned from working in the dining halls.

Yeah I have great memories of that place. A couple of my games came from there in the Fun Forest.I'm pretty sure my sit down Night Driver was the same one I used to play. The Red Baron will be at the Northwest Pinball and Arcade Show in about a week and a half

You're not flying a biplane, you're fling a triplane, and what you are seeing is the top and middle wing,and dual Vickers guns on the cabinet artwork. Red Barron was way fucking more intense than Battlezone. Don't let the biplanes get past you, hit by a bullet, or overheat your guns.

I played this game more than once back in the early 80s. Too young to get completely what was going on, but I enjoyed it anyway. I remember playing it up till about 1986 when it was the last time I saw it in the arcades. By that time other games had long took over, so I doubt many people missed it. Having said that, obviously if I had the money and the space I would love to own one. Thanks for sharing this video. I forgot about the propeller. Cool video.

I played the sit down one, one of the most amazing games I ever played.

That’s really cool. The cockpits are rare. Supposedly only 500 were made and who knows how many survived. We had one at the show back when it was in Seattle, luckily I got a chance to play one then.

Is it possible Atari sent out conversion kits for vendors to convert Battlezone to Red Baron? That would explain the side art issue, and the fact that there were still dedicated cabinets as you mention?

'Red Baron' has the same graphics 'Battle Zone' has, except for the color. 'Red Baron' has blue line graphics, 'Battle Zone' has green line graphics.
@choppergirl8 жыл бұрын
Actually, you are flying the Red Barron's triplane... the 3rd bottom wing is even lower and not displayed in the art work. Actually, the triplane is a quadroplane, with the little wing between the two wheels actually contributing to lift, and being the "4th" wing on a triplane... Bad ass game, I loved this back in the day... would really make you sweat when AA and bullets got fast and furious...

Thanks for this great video. Is the flight stick on this game analog or is just a simple 4 way stick.
@blinddog44Ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video. The flight stick is analog and allows you to specify how fast to bank, climb or dive during gameplay. I really enjoy how the game controls on this one.
