When Luke states he's a Jedi like his father before him... MAN. That pride combined with courage feels like a spit in Emperor's face. Such an inspirational moment that has shown me how important it is to stand up saying f*** off to any kind of manipulator trying to control my life. One of the best moments in OT for sure.

I always say this, "The empire strikes back" is the best Star Wars movie but the final duel from "Return of the jedi" is the pinnacle of Star Wars.
@g.davidturnblom57514 жыл бұрын
Well stated. This duel is a huge part of why Return of the Jedi is my favorite Star Wars film. It also seems to me that it is one of the most important battles ever written simply because it ends with Luke turning back from the greatest of all temptations, the temptation to destroy that which you hate. I'm not saying that I think Luke hated Vader, or even the emperor, but that he hated what they had done. Had he turned his hatred toward the Emperor, he would not have tossed his lightsaber away, but turned back against Palpatine in an effort to retaliate, seeking revenge. Through his lust for power, Palpatine had destroyed the freedom and dignity of the entire galaxy, and destroyed any chance of saving himself in doing so. Luke, by resisting the Emperor's power and choosing to stand in clear opposition to the Emperor after having come so close to submitting to the same hatred, destroyed Palpatine's life work. The rest of his journey toward becoming Luke is almost irrelevant with these scenes simply because Luke grows more as a result than he could have otherwise, in my opinion, making this scene more important than any other as I see it. I still love "The Empire Strikes Back" and "A New Hope" and see them both as stronger films overall, but neither has anything with as much critical importance to a story as Luke's throne room battle against Vader does. Important growth moments, yes, but nothing as critical as these scenes. I therefore agree with you that it is the pinnacle of Star Wars, but I also believe the battle is also one of the greatest events in all of film history, not just Star Wars.

Something I always found interesting is that when Vader says ‘Sister... so you have a twin sister.’ Not only does Vader look slightly upwards towards where Palpatine would be, but he emphasises the word ‘sister’ as if he wanted Palpatine to hear him say that. I thought he did all this because once again he has learnt more about the lie that Palpatine told him, and this the hidden-away part of Vader that wants to betray and kill Palpatine come out in a sense of passive-aggression. Vader’s actor was so fucking good at conveying Vader’s internal conflict and withheld emotions, especially considering he was a masked man.

Amazing! Every word that you just said, was correct! As Yoda said: “A Jedi, uses the force for knowledge and defense, never to attack” Luke had an instinct of darkness, as the prequels state “the dark side blinds/clouds the Jedi,” in this case the dark side blinded him that he attacked his own father (just like he will do with Ben Solo) ... but then Luke realized he was blinded and let the rage flow through him, so he stops when he sees his father’s arm and compares it to his own, a reminder of how “he has too much of his father in him” and how he was becoming Vader... Luke made a choice, the light side will win, and Luke learned the value of not using a lightsaber , he will not make the mistakes of the past Jedi of killing violently during the clone wars, he will become a better Jedi, a defensive peace keeper, defeat the darkness with pure light ... resolve conflict with a peaceful mind without anger, redemption happened to father and son at the same time... and the green color signifies how Luke has grown as a character , a more wise and patient Jedi than he was in the previous movies, this battle was a perfect finale for the original trilogy! Love every lightsaber analysis you do in your videos!!! Please do more! Consider Mace Windu vs Palpatine and Dooku vs Anakin and Obi wan And Yoda

This scene has my most favorite scene of all Star Wars. When Vader taunts Luke and realizes he has a sister. Luke taps into the dark side and starts to win the fight. The best part is from the outside in it seems like a awesome comeback, the hero is winning. The music juxtaposes this with such a saddening tone and you realize hes failing. Hes winning the fight, but failing as a Jedi. He cuts Vaders hand off and goes to kill him when he looks at his father's hand. That snaps him out of it, because it shows him a similarity between him and Vader and makes him realize at this moment Luke isn't far off from Vader. He used his anger to win. He throws his saber away and accepts death instead of turning. Truly epic.

Yeah, the one who stood up to the emperor, and tried his best to bring his father back to the light. Not stand over his nephew with an ignited lightsaber instead of talking to him and helping him sort through his feelings like any reasonable, non-psychopathic jedi would do, not even jedi, just any normal, well adjusted human being would talk to someone who is having dark thoughts, not instinctually pick up a knife. That's not normal, that's not ok, and that shouldn't be romanticized or glorified. Its disturbing as fuck. The fact people can't see it as such worries me.

If there was a single moment in the original trilogy that I could single out as my favorite, it'd be Luke looking at his own hand after cutting off Vader's. So when Sidious says "strike me down with all of your hatred, and your path to the dark side will be complete", is he hoping Luke kills him so he can transfer his soul into Luke (i.e. exactly what he tried with Rey)? @GonzoTehGreat5 жыл бұрын
I think it's clear that Sheev was tempting Luke to attack him in order to seduce him to the darkside, safe in the knowledge that Vader would intercept any lethal blow and defend his master with his life. It appears to be a win-win scenario for the Emperor, because either Vader kills Luke, thereby ending the Jedi, or Luke kills Vader, succumbing to the darkside in the process. For Luke to turn he needs to act out of rage and hatred, which is why both the Emperor and Vader goad him into losing his temper. The ending of RotJ is a beautifully crafted, fitting climax to the Skywalker Saga. It doesn't need explanation by unoriginal, formulaic filmmakers like JJ who have ruined a great story by trying to retcon it, instead of progressing the SWU with a new one.

@@knightclinic332 I never said it was, so why introduce a strawman? What I DID say is that the ending of RotJ is self explanatory, as any well written ending should be, unlike the story in the sequels. JJ doesn't need to explain RotJ and he shouldn't even be trying to explain something which is already so well written and told. He should've used the sequels to tell a new story instead, but he's not a creative or original filmmaker, as TFA proved.

@@GonzoTehGreat But us disagreeing on whether or not ROTJ is self-explanatory has nothing to do with JJ Abrams. I've had these questions about the OT since before the prequels existed. Whether or not the sequel trilogy should have been more original is a different discussion, in my opinion.

However he focuses himself and his lightsaber to a degree that it awakens him to the 5th form of lightsaber combat, Djem-So and because he was tainted by the dark side gave way to Juyo shortly after. 10:04- In the film, Palpatine likely was annoyed at the annoying whelp defying him and wanted to put him in his place. In the broader context, he was prepping for years to turn Luke to evil since before he was born using Anakin/The Senate/Separatists to achieve this goal of ruling the Empire and to be the Sith to gloat about being the one who turned the Jedi into their own to ensure their extinction. Seeing all of that fall apart after over three decades of planning, is going to....irk him a great deal.

The way that I've always seen Luke's first salvo blocked by Vader is from two separate points of view. As in Vader not only blocks Luke's first strike to protect his Master, but also in a type of subconscious way of keeping him from falling to the Darkside by striking the Emperor in anger. Or maybe I'm just a naive fanboy.

This is by far the best lightsaber duelscene as far as I’m concerned. When Vader suggests that Leia could be turned, it fills Luke with hate and makes him throw himself at Vader with all he’s got. At that moment the only thing he wants to do is to kill Vader. The music is sad and dramatic, because it’s horrible to feel that you have to kill your father to protect your sister. This is what makes this scene so emotionally charged. Because of all this, as far as I’m concerned, none other lightsaber duels are better than this one.

The struggle against the Dark Side isn’t a one and done deal. Luke can’t just say “I’ll never turn to the dark side” and that’s that. It’s a lifetime of struggle and torment, especially since Luke used it to best Vader. That perspective makes Luke’s actions in TLJ so much more understandable.
@jollyrenzosabado73815 жыл бұрын
Thats part of the movie I can understand thou its a hard pill to swallow. But understandable you will have countless battles with your dark thoughts and you may not win them all.But abandoning your friends and family and the entire galaxy for a self imposed exile , rather than trying to "fix" what Luke has done to Ben is where "character assasination" comes into play. In the return of the jedi,Luke may have "used" the dark.side to win against Vader, in the end he chose to go against it solidifying Luke as this "I may not be perfect but I will always do whats right" kind of character. Not the "ow I messed up, i don't wanna do anything anymore because I'm a failure". That's just my opinion of what Luke is/should have been. Again only the author/writer can say what kind of person their creation is i.e. Luke. But I still can't help but think that Luke should have had a different ending, or at least George would have written him differently.

Looking forward to your look at the duels in TRoS and the Prequels. Any chance of looking at Ahsoka VS Vader as well?

I love that people love this duel. It's the best of Star Wars. My approach to it is strictly OT. I don't think about any characters in the subsequent movies; I grew up watching this before those movies existed.

In this fight I have a feeling that Anakin was coming back and forth into vader For intense when Luke flipped on the stairs and Vader paused I feel that Anakin was trying to holding Vader back because Anakin was impressed with his Son but it quickly turned into anger when Vader had taken over Anakins body . Second example Is when Luke cuts Vader’s hand off , I would say that Vader had became Anakin for a little while at that point . But when palpatine attacked Luke , and Luke’s love for his father , it brought Anakin Skywalker again . Then Anakin saved his son and was redeemed as the Ultimate Messiah. Great video!

At 2:25 you see Vader block Luke’s saber from striking down the emperor. This is my favorite scene in all of Star Wars. Lasting no more than 2 seconds, Anakin Skywalker instinctively blocked an attack that would have allowed the sith lord’s demise - fulfilling Vader’s wish to “rule the galaxy as father and son.” It’s at this moment that, to me, really shows that “conflict” Luke describes. Absolutely saving his son.

That wide tracking shot where Luke draws on the dark side and the camera moves right to left as Luke pushes Vader back is one of my favourite visuals in a lightsaber duel. I don't really rate ROTJ that high on my list of favourite Star Wars movies but I'd be lying if I said this Throne Room sequence wasn't one of the highlights of the entire franchise.

I always loved the end of this duel, its pretty much the Bespine duel in reverse, except faster and angrier
@mannyman10124 жыл бұрын
According to the rise of skywalker novel, Vader blocked the shot to save Luke. If Luke strikes sidious down he would do essence transfer.
@Tyler_J_Cook5 жыл бұрын
Not to forget that when Vader threw his saber at Luke, you can see in the next scene that Vader also disarmed him, by having Luke's saber in his hand. Having his own red blade and Luke's green blade could be symbolic in the way of Vader holding on to the last bit of light and dark at the same time.

This is the best lightsaber duel in all of Star Wars and the single best scene in all of Star Wars. From the beginning of the duel between Father and Son to Anakin Skywalker killing Darth Vader and killing the emperor and saving his son and then dying recognizing that Luke saved him. Best scene in all of Star Wars

One thing I was surprised wasn't mentioned in greater detail was the final few blows of the duel. Once Vader is on the ground, the dark side has such a hold on Luke that his blows have no form, no elegance- Luke is just hacking away at Vader as hard as he can. A Luke who wasn't being so swallowed in hate at that moment might've been able to yank the lightsaber out of Vader's grasp the way Vader did to him in the previous fight, but due to what Luke is experiencing it's instead just the same repeated forceful blow, powering through Vader's weak block until his arm basically passes out and gets cut off. Another thing i found from watching the scene right after watching this video was that, while it's hard to hear over the music and the clashing of sabers, Luke keeps grunting in anger as he powers forward, while Vader's breathing becomes quick and short, as he's undoubtedly at first surprised and then panicked by his son unleashing his full fury upon him it all brings that much more appreciation to what was already my favorite saber duel

This was more of an emotional battle than I thought. It's father vs son not Luke vs Vader
@dmonhuntr755 жыл бұрын
This has always been my favorite. It's the most emotional. Ashoka vs Vader in Rebels, and Rey vs Kylo on the Death Star ruins are right up there for me too. After repeated viewings of The Clone Wars series though, everytime Vader shows up on screen now, he has so much more presence. It's tragic.

Do Sith ghosts exist? Or does the force wielder need to be at more peace when they die in order to become a ghost? Like, is it technically possible?

YAS!! ⚔️⚔️⚔️👏👏👏🥰🥰🥰. It’s finally here, y’all, but I’m not first. Seeing the Skywalker fought between each other is just plain emotional, family disagreements results in duels. But I’m glad you’re covering my favorite duel as well. 24 hours to go till TROS. Edit: LOL!! Vader isn’t having it on the high ground, 3 times. ⚔️⚔️⚔️. Even with amazing powers, Luke is still human, makes mistakes, and resisting the dark side urges is truly the traditional Jedi way.

Something I have come to recognize since the rise of skywalker novel is that vader's original block to stop luke from killing the emperor was 100% Anakin Skywalker. Why I say this is because the book says Palpatine had tried this essence transfer to the person who killed him before, it says vader saved luke by starting the duel. It is truly beautiful
@ATATChat4 жыл бұрын
The reason that all kinda doesn't work for me (I know JJ made it canon) is that if Vader was stopping his son then Palpatine could have just elimated Vader with his force lightning and pushed Luke to strike him down again. I like the concept of Vader helping his son in that moment but it creates a lot of issues with this duel. Cheers!

When Luke and Vader fought on Cloud City, Luke believed Vader had killed his father; Obi-Wan said so. Luke continued to believe this until that duel when Vader told him he is his father. Luke was tempted to given to his anger; Vader even said it: " You have controlled your fear. Now unleash your anger, only your hatred can destroy me". Luke chose not to give to his hate. After Vader reveals he is his father, Luke knows Obi-Wan lied. A year or so later, on the Death Star 2, Luke knows he is fighting his father, so of course the tone and feeling are different for him. It's another duel, but Luke is trying to reason with Vader, calling him father even! Luke knows theres still a chance to get through to Vader(thinking Anakin is still in there somewhere). He was right. Vader killed Palpatine to save Luke; the son he never knew he had, knowing Palpatine's darkside lightning would damage his life support function of his suit. Vader now Anakin again is redeemed.

Didn't Palpatine exhaust skywalker and Vader to make sure they did not use the force much? Also, what was that force ability called? I do not think it was Force Exhaustion.

My favorite too... my favorite throughout the entire 9 movies. And then, yeah, as cliché as it is, my 2nd favorite duel is Obi Wan Maul from REBELS... once I realized how Obi-Wan "suckered" Maul in & THAT'S why it was so short, I immediately loved it more... however, it's what happens AFTER the Killing blow that really pushes this short and extremely powerful fight up to 2nd for me

When you said that Vader had to be VERY strong to hold of Luke, he is almost completely robotic in the arms and legs. So that would make him pretty strong plus he is extremely strong with the force and uses it with every move and strike. Another thing is Vader cant have to much movement because his Armour so he uses his crazy strength and force powers as compensation
