Everyone was expecting Luke to kill Vader in this movie. The Return of the Jedi was supposed to be about him bringing the Order back. And he did, though not in the way anyone expected. He did it by reaching his father, and drawing out the Jedi in him. Making him see that no, the Emperor hadn't driven the good from him fully. He could still turn back. The Jedi who returned in Return of the Jedi was *Anakin* , not Luke. THAT is how you subvert expectations.

....I just realized something absolutely brilliant. The line “you don’t know the power of the dark side” has a dual meaning throughout the two Lucas trilogies. Depending on who is saying it and when, it is either a threat or a plea. For instance, when Vader says it to Luke in this climax it is a plea. He is trapped in the dark side. It was a slippery slope for him, his pain and rage trapping him where he is. It’s the allure of the dark side that Vader is referring to as its power at the end here. It’s exactly as Lucas said-it’s like poetry. It rhymes.

Except...it wasnt a slippery slope for Anakin. He was never tempted by dark side. He didnt fall. He jumped. He switched teams. He made a dumbass choice based on the most unreliable hearsay ever. We never got to see Vader consumed by the corruption of the dark side. He was on the good guys side til he decided Palpatines offer was more attractive. Reason 101 why i cant stomach the prequels. Lucas had one job to do...with 3 movies to do it....and STILL messed it up 😡

I'm with you on this. There are so many reasons to love this finale. What's been striking me lately is how utterly defiant Luke is toward the Emperor. He speaks to him boldly and with disdain, never giving him the respect and awe others do. This no doubt enrages the Emperor. Ian McDiarmid is amazing here, showing, a little bit at a time, that Luke's insolence is getting to him. A truly priceless moment is when Luke addresses him, mockingly, as "your highness". It is an honorific quite appropriate for a prince or princess, but it is never used to address a king, queen, or emperor. "Your Imperial Majesty", "Your Majesty", or even "Your Excellency" would be correct here. "Your Highness" is an insult. Years ago, when I saw this in the theatres, I didn't realize what an absolute badass Luke was being here. He does what his father dreams of doing: he stands up to the Emperor, mocking and insulting him all the way. By doing so, he puts his life at grave risk, and ultimately chooses to die rather than give in to the vile man who ruined his father. At this moment, he becomes not only a Jedi, but one of the greatest to ever live. Then it gets even better. Anakin Skywalker, overcome with emotions that he thought himself no longer capable of, rises up in defense of his son and, using the last of his remaining strength, destroys the hated Emperor, proving that there is no higher ground than love. Thank you for this brilliant and obviously heartfelt tribute. May the Force be with you.

Something that I wish was talked about more was that Luke used the Dark Side to defeat Vader. Sure, Luke's love was what ultimately redeemed Anakin. But if Luke hadn't first hulked out and beaten Vader down, he couldn't have shown mercy and spared him. And Luke using his anger for good should have immediately discredited much of the teaching of the old Jedi order. The Jedi were so afraid of the Dark Side that they stigmatized emotion. They were literally afraid of fear. Luke's actions should have proven that there was a better way. A way to actually bring balance to the Force. Not by destroying the Dark Side, but by bringing the two sides together into harmony. But, apparently Luke failed to come to this conclusion, tried to recreate the Jedi as they were, and was met with predictable results. When Luke said "It's time for the Jedi to end" I wish they had gone through with it, and instead started something new. Alas, the Jedi branding is too strong to ever be discontinued.

This has got to be one of, if not the best analysis of ROTJ and its ending I have ever seen. Was introduced to the series by dad at the age of 5 (the actual original cuts too) and at first I was not into Star Wars at all. Somewhere in the first 1/3 of ESB I got into it and by the end of that movie with greatest of twists I was positively gobsmacked by it...had to know how it all ended. By the time we got to the end of ROTJ where Vader silently makes his choice whether or not to save Luke and redeem himself is still one of the most intense and suspenseful moments that I can recall watching a movie ever, and asking my dad if Luke was going to survive....naturally the only words I got were "just watch". That scene is without question my favorite scene in the entire franchise and one of the most powerful and masterfully done moments I can think of in a movie. Having it all deeply analyzed, broken down and compared to other moments in the series really does bring to light how well constructed and slightly underappreciated ROTJ is in the context of the series. ROTJ has always been my favorite of the series because of the emotional heft of it all and the payoff at the end. But it really namely comes down between the interplay and interaction of Luke and Vader that has always sealed the deal for me with this movie. I marathoned the series again last Xmas while my wife and I were closely reaching our due date for our first child, and having not watched the movies for a few years I was struck very hard by how much I missed watching these movies (the first 6 anyways, not the sequel trilogy). I wasn't too shocked by that reaction but what I was not prepared for was how hard ROTJ seemed to hit me, especially relationship of Luke and Vader and how that all goes down. A lot of that I would imagine has to do with the fact that I was about to become a father myself very shortly so I imagine that greatly influenced how I saw this movie and more importantly how it made me feel about. Especially when I was watching them again on my original, childhood VHS tapes even though they are pretty faded and nearly ready to fall apart and become unwatchable. Don't fully have the right word to properly express how thrilling, how deep, how complex and ultimately how moving I find the end of ROTJ to be. It hits a very deep, emotional and personal chord within that I'm not sure I am fully able to describe. It quite simply moves me, and very deeply I will say. My dad was over a day or so later and I was re-watching it again and he simply asked "you think you will ever tire of this movie, let alone this part of it? You've have to have watched this hundreds and hundreds of times yet you never tire of it...I just don't get how you can love this movie this much this long." Fair point. But I can't properly explain why, its just a deep feeling I have. Now being a very happy and proud dad to a beautiful little girl, watching this video is one of the best analytical, wonderous, compelling and moving videos I have seen on Star Wars. Something I've only just realised from your commentary is lukes line 'I am a Jedi, like my father before me'. Luke uses that as his way of holding on to the light, but in a way thats what Anakin was lacking. The triggers were the same, fear of losing those they loved, but Luke had a golden image of the Jedi that was preached to him by Obi-wan and Yoda, whereas Anikan had the reality of their disfuctionality and hypocracy. Interesting parallel there, I always kind of accepted that the Jedi were part of the reason Anikan turned, but never really though the lens of they were his last line of defence to stop him turning.

This is why Return of the Jedi is my favorite of the Star Wars movies. That Finale is unmatched in all of Star Wars. It's probably followed closely by Revenge of the Sith for me because the way it ends really helps tie everything together between the two Trilogies, but it's really the last moments from Padmé to Vader to Leia to Luke to Obi-Wan to the Twin Suns paired with all of John Williams' score that brings it home, everything else is fun and awesome, but Return of the Jedi is truly where it's at. That last half of the movie does it all for me, the incredible effects, the fantastic battles, the isolated trio getting under each other's skin the entire time, UGH, it's so good! And then tack on John Williams and you can do no wrong, seriously that music when Luke and Vader have their final confrontation as the camera follows them behind the stairway, I get chills every time. I do hate the Special Edition of this movie though, Lapti Nek replaced, beaked Sarlacc, blinking Ewoks (it's freaky), Vader's "No," Vader's missing eyebrows (yeah I know, it makes sense, but it's really only a thing 2010 and on Internet would care about), Hayden's Ghost (more on that in a bit), Yub Nub replaced, too (but I don't mind Celebration), all the good stuff that gets me excited is practically untouched, but I still love the front half of this movie, too, and the CGI just looks so out of place. I grew up watching the 1990 VHS tapes so my brain knows what this movie should be, and then in 2004, my family got the DVDs, so we've spared those VHS tapes, and after having seen the later editions of these movies I will say that 2004 strikes a certain balance. At least the biggest moment of Vader finally deciding to save Luke isn't ruined with dialog, and it added in Naboo and Coruscant to the party, which I appreciate. I love me some Yub Nub, but Celebration does fit with all we know from the story and I will accept this change. When it does come to Hayden's Ghost, I don't hate it, but I think it's more the explanation behind it. Had he not been dying and in fact lived for another five years or so and became a ghost, what would he look like? Yeah Sebastian Shaw looks nothing like what he did in the suit but you knew it was Anakin, it wasn't because he looked like that before he went bad, which is what Lucas explains to be the case. I've come to terms with Heyden Ghost and have a way to make Hayden Ghost work. I see the Ghosts as more a mental projection of the Jedi as they see themselves, and so Yoda and Obi-Wan look their age because they had already come to terms that this is who they were. Despite perhaps feeling 350 and 35 respectively, they know they are old and they even acknowledge that they're old in the movies: "You have to help her Luke, I'm getting to old for these sorts of things," "Look I so old to such young eyes? I do, yes I do. Time for me to rest it is, yes, forever sleep." Anakin on the other hand, he has no mental image of who he is when he drops the Vader persona, he literally still is that 25 yer old kid in his brain, and that's all he knows to project as the ghost. Imagine if Dooku was actually reformed and was a Jedi halfway through the Clone Wars and then survived Order 66 and learned from Qui-gon like Yoda and Obi-Wan, what would his ghost be? Would he have a nice younger looking Christopher Lee that was 10 years younger before the Clone Wars ended, I imagine he would look like the older one we saw in the movies. This theory that the ghosts project how they feel also means you could do some interesting stuff with them and you could have had Hayden, and Ewan show up in the sequels without having to negate the love fans have for the theatrical versions of the Original Trilogy while also paying homage to the prequels and honoring George Lucas's changes and making things feel more unified. Thanks to the World Between Worlds and we've been told in stories that the ghosts perceive no time while also seeing all of time, perhaps that means Hayden could see a future where he became Sebastian, and could therefore manifest that version of himself. There could have been a rad Force Ghost Vision-y thing with Kylo Ren where Anakin shows up and could manifest also as Darth Vader to scare the crap out of him. As much as I hate seeing Palpatine return, I have a fun little fanfictiony thing in my headcanon where as Kylo is sleeping, Anakin comes to him, questioning Ben's actions and warning him of the things he can still prevent. He shows the man he could have grown to become had he resisted the Dark Side (turning into Sebastian) but Kylo barks back that he was weak, the Dark Side is stronger. Then Anakin begins sharing what he lost while walking towards Ben as he backs into the wall of his quaters, each limb slowly falling off as Anakin explains all the horrible things he's done that put anything Kylo has to to shame, and then bursting into flames only for Vader to then pop out, nearly a hand at Ben's through saying "You don't knoooooooow..." (back to Hayden) "...the power of the Dark Side." The other ghosts of Luke, Obi-Wan, Yoda, and even Qui-Gon appear sharing their experiences; it's too much for Ben. And then the alarm sounds, Ben falls to the ground, an officer at his door saying that a message from the unknown regions has come in, it's Palpatine's message. Kylo is now determined to kill this guy that dares try to usurp him who will then only say that every voice he has ever heard in his head was Palpatine all along. The Force Ghosts/Vision has now been interpreted as a test that Kylo passed because he kept resisting, and then Episode IX commences as we saw. It allows him to still stay conflicted while also giving a moment so many fans wanted to see. I don't know what all the details are yet, and I'm no writer, but I'd love to get this story told in some form beyond just comments. But yeah, Return of the Jedi, that's where the story truly ends for me, but I know there are ways to make the Sequels fit better so as to not write them off entirely because I also have a lot of moments I like, particularly the whole of The Last Jedi.

ROTJ has always been my favorite of the Original Trilogy because we got to see Luke in his prime. It all started with Luke showing up at Jabba's Palace and rescuing his friends. It seemed that he had some miscalculations when he was captured and taken to be dropped into the Sarlac pit. But, in fact he was in complete control of the situation when R2 released his light saber. And this is why I love the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian because we see Luke as a fully trained Jedi Master beyond where he was in ROTJ. While there wasn't as much action and of Yoda as in Empire, I always enjoyed seeing Luke being patient and calculated instead of impatient and hasty when he rushed off to try and save his friends instead of completing his training on Dagoba.

The high ground part is Return isn't intentional, but the one in Revenge is. "Obi-wan has taught you well" Vader says as Luke has the high ground. That's reflected in Obi-Wan shouting "I have the high ground." Lukas has a lot going for him, if he only had an assistant director for the prequels they would have been amazing.

Lucas remarks that the most fundamental difference between Anakin and Luke is that Luke deals with life intuitively, not deliberately like Anakin. There's more though. Luke sincerely takes responsibilities for his missteps. Anakin never does. Anakin gives a curt apology, then slinks away. Anakin is always filled with resentment for having to make decisions in the first place, so he sees himself as beyond responsibility. Luke just sucks-it-up and moves on. That's really what happens here. He doesn't see dismembering Vader as a red line that he crossed. He is somewhat able to differentiate between bad behavior and being a bad person. He simply says "No." and stops. Even though Luke is faced with the responsibility for letting EVERYONE die, and his sister potentially turned, he simply says "No." and walks away. He doesn't agonize like Anakin in the council chamber. He doesn't second guess himself. As far as being a Jedi is concerned, Luke has the much better temperament for it, than his father ever did.

What I like to think is that once Luke made his speech to Palpatine, he kinda thought that was it. Old Palpy was a prune who no longer had Vader to fight for him, so all he had to do was escape and wait until Lando blew up the Death Star. But then Palps just goes “Oh well, no new apprentice,” and just starts zapping, and poor Luke is like “THIS ISN’T ONE OF THE THINGS I THOUGHT THE FORCE COULD DO, ABORT ABORT ABORT.” It’s the equivalent of the Scooby-Doo villain of the week getting unmasked, but then starts snapping necks.

I've seen videos do "what if" Vader had lived through this... There was NO WAY for that to happen. Vader was the abominable scourge of the galaxy, responsible for THOUSANDS of deaths, a ruthless and evil manipulator and enforcer for DECADES. That could never be erased, no matter what happened next. If he had lived, he still would have had to die in Republic custody, and that would have just been anticlimactic. Besides, this was all about Luke's feat, and now that he'd redeemed his father it was Luke's turn ion the galaxy. This was the only way that made ANY kind of sense to the story arc, it was perfect, and it HAD to be. Letting him live would have been the kind of mistake the trilogies might have made.

No longer canon. In the current lore, Vader's armor is not as vulnerable to lightning. Which is shown multiple times in the comics.
