Very good tutorial, excellent vu meter without plate, my question would be how to put a potentiometer to regulate the sensitivity and how to make it electrical so that it works with led strips?
@soupflood4 жыл бұрын
You'd need a transistor for each LED strip, and a separate power source. The transistor base would be connected to the plus pin (anode) of the LED through a 1k resistor. To power the LED strips from the wall, you can use thyristors controlled by optocouplers.

@cd-zw2tt2 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't think you need it. Fairly sure they are doing some sort of filtering. You also don't even need the rectifier if you are using a biased signal, or really any audio signal above 60Hz. Since the human eye can't really see changes quick enough above 60Hz (where most audible frequencies are 20Hz - 20kHz, so close enough), we can probably simplify this circuit to only be the LEDs, audio input, and resistors. I built this circuit without them and using 3.5mm headphone jack as input and it was fine. Note that I am not using amplified speaker level as input!!

let say that nearly half of the power is going to this VU, if it suddenly blow of as so the speaker will blow after.... & about the cost of 9 20V zeners...
@Pulse87dotca4 жыл бұрын
Nope. If you're throwing more out of your amplifier than what your speakers can handle, you've got a problem with or without this VU meter. Second, no where near half the power will go to this meter. This won't even be using a watt out of the possible 100 watts going to the speaker. Third, zeners across an amplifier output could prove to be disastrous to the amplifier: 1 watt zener - possible 100 watt amp output - zener overloads and shorts - amp overloads and blows outputs. Huge repair or junk amp all for the cost of some zeners. No thanks.

@@CyrusBrinkworthRAS I would agree you shouldn't build one. I would say you shouldn't build any sound system gear if your system designs could blow their own speakers. It isn't the blowing of a speaker that would cause hyperacusis or deafness. It's the dangerously high volume levels from using an overpowered amp for the venue and people too close to your poorly matched speakers. "when you blow speaker in the face of 300 people"?? *When*? There's no excuse for blowing a speaker or making people deaf at any public performance. That said, a passive VU powered off the speaker cables is pretty dumb for a concert sound system. I'm a component-level electronics repair tech and a very competent front-of-house engineer. I've never blown a speaker, or made anyone deaf, even with a 1,000 watt sound system.

No... because what is happening is that the diodes thats goes upward with the LEDs has a voltage requirement so therefore if you want to hit the white more often you increase the volume if you want to barely hit the red... decrease the volume till that happens... Neat circuit... But - for a true VU meter, the coloured LED's are in the wrong order. Ideally the order should be something like - green ( < -20 to -7dB), blue (-7 to -2dB), white (Ref - 0dB), yellow (0 to +3dB), red ( >+3dB - 'clipping').
@daoutbox98844 жыл бұрын
Each led colour has their own volt drop dictates the least drop would be last on chain - blue and white draw more current. And so on you get very low voltage red leds ect. May be wrong on something here but right elsewhere.
