Athearn Blue Box DCC Project Nearly Complete

Our Athearn Blue Box diesel upgrades DCC project is nearly complete! We have been working to get the last A unit completed in our A-B-A F7 consist and we are finally up and running! The two A units date back to about 35 years ago and the B unit was purchased last year. All three of the Athearn blue box diesels have new Athearn Genesis motors. We used ESU decoders in all three locomotives, but only the A units have lights and sound.

They sound amazing! If you can find a way get some weights inside the shells would really help with the traction. I always add weights to my cars

Thank you! The A units were mine as a kid, so this was a fun project. The sticky weights are not quite thin enough to fit. We recently ran 28 train cars including 10 passenger cars behind this trio up a 2% incline around curves with no additional weight. 😮 I would like to find a way to add additional weight though.

Thank you! Well he is 10 so his age perspective is a bit off. 😂 The Athearn Genesis motors fit with no modifications. Don’t be nervous about motor swaps. We’ve done some on other locos too and you can usually find one that doesn’t require modifications for mounting.

Forgive me for not listening, I was too busy letting Thomas the Tank Engine distract my attention. I don't like either American or British diesels, but show me a British steam engine, like the Great Western Manor tender engine, hard at work, and she will win me over tenfold. Is Thomas a good performer on your railway? If so, please run him for me. In November, I'll run my Thomas models for David in return.

We like both diesel and steam and those diesels were mine as a kid. Thomas works well. He's the Bachmann HO model but we added DCC with sound and some LED lighting. He will be used in a video soon, but we have also run him in several other videos. I'll try to work on a compilation video of Thomas soon!
