Well done, worked on these for over 40 years. Your fuel looks contaminated though. Make sure your turbos are serviced. Drain oil, remove round covers and wash out sludge, check free rotation and refit covers and fill with fresh oil. Check for air intake fractures and exhaust blows . Also remove intercooler drain plugs, you will find that a goo may come out but don't panic.

My brother rented the 'planeing shed' as a unit in the old Vulcan Works at Newton-le-Willows for many years before the works' sad demise and demolition. I used to walk through the other sheds on occasions, in awe of their sheer size and importance in history. In the engine testing shed, there were dozens of Napier Deltic (I know that isn't a Napier) injectors lying around. Some were clearly used but many of them still had their tags attached and look like new stock. Sadly, I never seen any use in them and, after I had moved on and the buildings were demolished, I would imagine the injectors and LOTS of gear wheels (possibly timing gears (?), new and used) were probably thrown in the scrap skips😥😥 Great to here the old girl running again. Keep up the good work👍🏻👍🏻

I love seeing these old diesel dinosaurs come back to life but the one thing I've never know is how do you actually turn the engine over to get it started in the first place. There must be a huge electric motor and battery bank to get the crankshaft turning to get it started. I do understand that there is a decompression of the engine to help with initial start up.
@Classickoolcars2 ай бұрын
Yeah I wondered about that also. Massive battery. 🤷♂️😱😱😱
@muir80092 ай бұрын
Diesel electrics have the diesel motor that turns the generator that makes the power for the traction motors. But they also have a neat feature: when you put electricity into the generator, it turns into an electric motor. So with a healthy wad of battery juice, you turn the generator into a motor and voilá, one enormous starter motor :)
