WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

“When it comes to bullshit, big-time, major league bullshit, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion. No contest. No contest. Religion. Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit! I've often thought people treat God rather rudely, don't you? Asking trillions and trillions of prayers every day. Asking and pleading and begging for favors. Do this, gimme that, I need a new car, I want a better job. And most of this praying takes place on Sunday His day off. It's not nice. And it's no way to treat a friend. But people do pray, and they pray for a lot of different things, you know, your sister needs an operation on her crotch, your brother was arrested for defecating in a mall. But most of all, you'd really like to fuck that hot little redhead down at the convenience store. You know, the one with the eyepatch and the clubfoot? Can you pray for that? I think you'd have to. And I say, fine. Pray for anything you want. Pray for anything, but what about the Divine Plan? Remember that? The Divine Plan. Long time ago, God made a Divine Plan. Gave it a lot of thought, decided it was a good plan, put it into practice. And for billions and billions of years, the Divine Plan has been doing just fine. Now, you come along, and pray for something. Well suppose the thing you want isn't in God's Divine Plan? What do you want Him to do? Change His plan? Just for you? Doesn't it seem a little arrogant? It's a Divine Plan. What's the use of being God if every run-down shmuck with a two-dollar prayerbook can come along and fuck up Your Plan? And here's something else, another problem you might have: Suppose your prayers aren't answered. What do you say? "Well, it's God's will." "Thy Will Be Done." Fine, but if it's God's will, and He's going to do what He wants to anyway, why the fuck bother praying in the first place? Seems like a big waste of time to me! Couldn't you just skip the praying part and go right to His Will? It's all very confusing.” - George Carlin

A god presents itself in order to give a command. Numbers 15:32-36 32 Now while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. 33 And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation. 34 They put him under guard, because it had not been explained what should be done to him. 35 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The man must surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.” 36 So, as the Lord commanded Moses, all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him with stones, and he died. A god has clearly interacted with humans in this passage, yet no god does it now for 2,000 years. How does a god know a language? Can any god be demonstrated to actually be real in order to confirm that gods know our language? Why did a god supposedly choose a certain race as its supposed "Chosen" race without letting the entire world know of it? Why did a god only reveal itself in the Middle East and not around the world? Gods are not real since theists have not proven gods are real with actual existing gods - this is fact.

The accusation made by the woman from Canada that because he questioned the authenticity of a Native American legend (about a mysterious peacemaker figure residing deep in a wood bringing warring tribes together) was a racist was one of the lowest, cheapest, downright disgusting blows I've heard on this show. Matt was rightly applying the same criteria as he does (and everybody else should) to all claims of supernatural intervention: "Where's your evidence?" How do you know there was a "peacemaker" and how do you know he had a positive influence on anything? Legend are legends. Sometimes they contain a grain of truth, but sometimes they're just bullshit, legend of King Arthur, for instance, the sword in the stone and Holy Grail. The scenario presented by the woman lies in the same category unless it can be factually established. To suggest that there is something special about aspects of Native American culture that justifies the abandonment of reason (on the basis that reason is a racially biased, Western European, construct not qualified to critically examine ancient "truths") is the sort of tactic used by religious apologists everywhere.

It's a positive in my book. The very fact that it was an issue suggests flaws in the aims and focus of the organization. There's certainly some overlap between an organization advocating for secular humanism and lgbt+ rights, but they don't need to be one and the same, and for people who want to focus on the "atheism" aspect, maybe they don't want safe space politics to be a regular concern.

Pumps are generally experienced as involving liquids, but dry material can also be pumped. Examples of naturally occurring pumps: Ocean currents; waves passing through holes in rocks; any rhythmic pressure sieving liquid through pores; plate tectonics with subduction followed by volcanism. Pumps are everywhere. A pump is little more than a cyclic transfer of kinetic energy.

Here's the problem with David in GA's claim: He's trying to claim KJV doesn't actually use the word slave to talk about slavery. He's right that it doesn't use the word slave, but it does use the words bondmen and bondmaids. In Leviticus 25: 44-46 it says the following: "Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour." Bondmen and bondmaid are defined as male and female slaves or as people bound in service to another person without wages. Leviticus even describes them as "your possession." So, he's just lying. He's basically trying to weasel out of the whole owning people as property as a linguistic mistake. It's so intellectually dishonest.

@psilynt1
@psilynt1 5 жыл бұрын
Transgender politics at that. ACA hosted a KZbinr RationalityRules. After the show, they denounced him because he had previously made a video about transgender folks in sports. He wasn't given a chance to clarify his position nor did they correct any of his mistakes. Just a blanket statement and apology to those who were offended that they had him on the show. He later made a more informed video and ACA gave him an apology. This upset some people in the ACA and they quit. If you ask me, it's for the best. There's some overlap between atheism and LGBTQ rights, but they were a bit too entwined in the organization if this caused a major rift.
@jgestiot
@jgestiot 5 жыл бұрын
@@psilynt1 I made the very same point in the comment section of one of the Atheist Experience videos. It troubled me how in the last few years, the whole ACA has shifted towards LGBTQ rights, including being disproportionally staffed by gay and lesbians for the top positions, including President and Vice President and a number of leading host/co-hosts of the show who never missed a chance to affirm their gayness. I believe they lost their way when just about every episode became about gay, lesbian, transgender rights and minority rights in particular. If you look at the guests line-up on Talk Heathen and The Atheist Experience over the last couple of years, it tells the story loud and clear.

Or do you just assume that everyone takes your word for it because you claimed that everyone who doesn't accept this as 100% accurate fact is delusional? You would make a great christian apologist. And what makes you think that Tracie is such an SJW type? I honestly wouldn't know because I just don't listen to her that much because she just isn't that smart and insightful, but I always got the impression that she knows that and acknowledges it, so it would seem out of character to me if she suddenly outright condemns a video she knows hardly anything about on a topic she hardly knows anything about. But I suppose that if I don't know something and I don't assume that coinciding events are automatically causally linked in all cases and I don't have an alternative answer then that makes me delusional.

@abc def _"coinciding events are automatically causally linked in all cases" This is an asinine straw man that in no way corresponds to my speculative explanation._ Really? You said: _'Anyone who thinks this isn't the reason is delusional... Otherwise, why would 4 prominent hosts who have been on the show for years just suddenly leave at the same time with no replacements?'_ Implying that coinciding events are proof of causation and when anyone is not jumping to the same conclusion with no additional information they're delusional. You even said in another comment I am ignorant of the situation, so you admit that there is a possibility that there are people on this planet who don't know the full context, so how is anyone who doesn't have enough information to get to any conclusion at all going to be delusional when they DON'T jump to your asserted conclusion? How is the decision to not conclude anything when there isn't enough information delusional and how is it wrong for me to ask you what you base your conclusions on? You arrogantly assert that everyone must know that what you think is true must be true with only the explanation being an implication that it coincidental and then the idiotic claim that if you don't accept the assertion based on that implication alone you are delusional. That's implying that coincidence always proves causation.

They’re basically a cult that advocates killing all homosexuals (and everyone they perceive as homosexual). When Mr Atheist (who is pansexual) called them out and reported them to their various social media platforms for violating terms of service (hate speech) they called him “Mr Pumpkin” because “pumpkins are the biggest fruits around”. He and a big chunk of the atheist community liked that, took ownership of the insult, and have been trolling the cult with various pumpkin related imagery

@andyrihn1 thanks for catching me up. I’m into nerdy science channels and lately even the discussions of general relativity have degraded into scenes from “the exorcist” It’s hilarious and a little scary.

The atheist from New Zealand was probably tired of the same stuff from Christians but changing minds is very important, as Matt and Don pointed out and this is also entertainment for some atheists like myself. I look forward to the smackdowns Matt and the other hosts deal out on a weekly basis.

@@huepix Guess I shouldn't have said totally wrong. To me it is entertaining to watch the hosts hammer Christians with contradictions, slavery and atrocities in scripture. Half the time Christians aren't even aware what's in their own bibles.

@@todbeard8118 happy to discuss what i got wrong but matt kinda sidetracked the conversation and i had a massive anxiety when i went on air. We were talking at cross purposes there and its difficult to stay on track with someone who has been doing it for years when I'm totally unprepared. Matt kinda misrepresented my point and I'm the sort of person who likes to think before I speak, but at every pause he jmped in and said things i agree with as if i didn't. I realise they're limited for time but it was pretty frustrating

Why would you look forward to smackdowns? I think it is ridiculous that this show is labled as a debate when obviously only one viewpoint is being pushed. Also, in one sentence we have Matt talking about how he takes the moral highground, and then he spews out obscenities in the next sentence.

I didn’t know there were to be some departures. Thanks to you all for your magnificent efforts in shining light into the darkness. You will be missed, and I hope that you make “guest” appearances in the future.

41:21 matt hangs up the phone on a caller. Question: I love matt, LOVE MATT, but its hard to see him loose his temper more and more easily over the years with stupid callers and hang up on them. Does anyone else think he needs to take a break from this show and get a fresh start in a year+? Love to see if it bothers anyone else. Thanks!

I find it maddening for him to take such an aggressive stance with everyone. No one gets to talk but him. He just can't help himself. And yes, it does make the program hard to watch. He does it on TAE, he does it on Talk Heathen. He truly can not help himself. It was nice to have a wide spectrum of hosts, so we all got a break from Matt. Maybe he does need to step away for awhile.

The call your pointing too is a caller who wants matt to read him the whole slavery section so he can try to construct a way to worm himself out from that shit. That could take a good 10 - 15 min you think he deserved the time to do that? As for me, if i can predict how the converstaion will go and what the outcome will be, it looses all entertainment value and it makes me glad he hang up.

Matt isn't perfect and I don't agree with him sometimes when he hangs up on callers but I've noticed other times he's very patient with callers more so than I would have been so instead of criticizing the guy understand that if you're in his shoes you'll probably do a worse job which means Matt should not take a break let him hang up on whoever the hell he wants.
