After the second world war when Congress met they had a special debate about their future direction and in who or what should they reliably trust for the future preservation of the union. They decided it wasn't in armaments, or might of force, or industry or even the people themselves but concluded... In God We Trust. This became the Motto of the American Federal Government and was carved into the stonework in Congress itself. It was eventually printed on Federal Bills by the Federal Bank.
