I've seen the detailed videos out there for everyone to see for it to be shown and better yet explained! I believe all the bones were roughly only 20 million years apart. A lot people's misconceptions about evolution are about their inability to understand that a "species" is simply a selection of physical characteristics within a population within a certain range of time. A rabbit, is not a thing in the natural world, it is just what we call small hoping mammals with long ears. If you look at the color spectrum, can you point to the one specific spot, that is yellow? Can you define where yellow begins and ends? This is what a species is, an approximation of yellow, at some point it stops being yellow, but the actual edge is hard to define and doesn't really represent anything.

I'm with Rudy in that I also reached the conclusion that I was an atheist after one of Matt's shows. I was identifying as a deist for a long time, mostly through negative images I saw of atheists online as well as a defense against my parents who don't really like atheism. And it was through one of his videos just calling out the deist beliefs that made me realize I was just fooling myself. BUT! Through Matt, I found great shows like Talk Heathen and hosts like you guys! So I'm happy he was a stepping stone for me to enjoy great content like this.

What this caller neglects to understand is that mammals (like many other life forms) demonstrate bilateral symmetry. This means we did not need entire skeletons to understand what the species looked like or how they moved. We just need enough pieces from enough individuals to examine their morphological structures. Just a place to start.

I can see why Joseph gets banned from forum. He makes generalized pontification about his misunderstanding ideas & about atheist. And I doubt he's an atheist, he's using the same trope fundamentalist Christian use. For example, the claim Christians make that archaeologist ("a skull there, a hip bone here...)" only have a few bones of human ancestors, are purposely ignoring the fact that science have lots of bones, even almost complete skeletons of ancient hominids that can fill a warehouse. I'm an atheist but one thing I hate about this channel is the nearly complete lack of an understanding of science by the hosts. I was also a paleontologist (retired) and thus an evolutionary biologist. The caller is correct in his statement that science will offer an alternative to evolution. Nor will there be. While science does continually refine its hypotheses by incorporating new facts and data, once something rises to the level of a scientific theory it would take a mountain of evidence to dislodge that theory. Evolution has been the single theory that explains the variety of species seen on earth now and in the past. There is no alternative; belief in a religious creation by a god simply is not supported by the evidence. While science will continue to refine evolution, it is extremely unlikely, perhaps to the point of impossibility, that a theory where every piece of evidence in the past 180+ years will be overturned. There has never been one single fossil has threatened to do this, although many fossil finds continue to expand our knowledge and add new chapters to the theory. Other than that, the caller is clearly a troll and a theist. He can be easily dismissed because he offers no evidence of anything. He claims to have read a book that shows a "dog" as an ancestor to whales. This is nonsense. The whales did evolve from a land animal and pakicetus was the common ancestor to all whales. But pakicetus was not a dog; it evolved from an ancestor common to both whales and hippopotamus. (It gets a bit complicated without being able to show charts and clades on KZbin). Dogs descended from wolves which are only related in the sense that all mammals are related if one goes back in time far enough. If either of the hosts knew a bit more about evolution, they would have been able to answer this question far better. Lastly, his assertion that science has only five incomplete fossils of human ancestors. He's either nuts or he's a liar. For instance, a common argument is that the fossil known as Lucy is incomplete so how can we know anything about it. Lucy is an australopithecine and we have dozens and we not only have dozens of these, we have been able to subdivide australopithecus into seven subspecies all of which have numerous individuals. Part of this concept comes from scientifically illiterate main stream media which hypes the latest find (Lucy) as the "best". That's just not how it works in real science. Anyway, I could go on for hours since this has been my lifetime passion, but this just isn't the place. One last thing: I think it is unlikely that life on earth, past, present and future, is the only life in the universe. There are likely billions of forms of life out there. There just aren't coming here, nor can we get there because of this problem: the speed of light. We cannot exceed it or even approach it.

Its almost always a waste of time to try to explain scientific concepts to them. They know the information is out there but they've already made up their minds. Its better to point out flaws and inconsistencies in their thinking than to try to explain science to them.

Pakicetus is not a dog. It was a member of the Order Artiodactyla, which includes whales, deer, pigs, hippos, and many other ungulates. Dogs belong to a whole different Order called Carnivora. The name “Pakicetus” means Pakistani whale. It looks nothing like a dog and looks more like a long snout pig with sharp teeth and a long tail. The reason it is classified as an early whale is because of the inner ear characteristics that are unique to primitive and modern whales. All known ancestors of whales have large auditory bulla that forms from the Ectotympanic bone only.

John Wood That is very true, but I like to think that most people, whether they have a degree in biology or not, know that there is more to a dog than it has four legs, a tail, howls, and makes weird noises. There is a mouse that checks all those boxes and only grows to be 5 inches long from head to tail. It’s called the grasshopper mouse. I find it sad anyone tries to con other into think they understand evolution when in reality they don’t. The check list used by biologist to identify a species is more in-depth then simply the appearance of the organism.

I don't for a second believe this caller is honest. I can see why he has been banned from forums all over. He brings up points I am 100% sure he has heard debunked multiple times. Joseph. Most fossil finds are incomplete. It is extremely rare to have anything close to a full creature find on anything other than imprints (which tend to be smaller creatures). Like with T-Rex, we got very lucky to have one which is 90% complete, and that was a very rare find. Dinosaurs are also a very diverse group of creatures that lived for 165 million years, whereas hominids (a much more specific group) have been around for a few million years. But we also have quite a few good specimens when it comes to human evolution. When it comes to evolution, genetics is far more useful when it comes to evolution. Things like ERVs and Pseduogenes are excellent supporters of the theory of evolution.
