The combatants decide on any rules before the combat starts, and for all Cairne's talk about the "original" rules of mak'gora, he was saying that as an actual outsider to orc culture. Magic is permitted in mak'gora if it isn't explicitly banned by the combatants. If magic was always banned, then orc shamans would always be at the mercy of warriors in the tribes if there was disagreement between them. If magic was banned in a mak'gora, Thrall would have immediately lost the mak'gora between him and Garrosh in the Wrath pre-patch, and lost his connection to the elements then. There was also a comic, canon to Warcraft, of a strike team set up by Garrosh when he was warchief in Cataclysm, with an orc shamaness as the leader, and a blood elf paladin. The two fought a mak'gora as the paladin questioned the shaman's leadership, thinking it was specifically because she was an orc due to Garrosh's racial biases. Both used magic in the duel. Stop fucking taking the movie as gospel on the rules of mak'gora. They got a lot of fucking things wrong in that movie about Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, like the fact that Stormwind wasn't sacked in the movie, or that Llane silently allowed Garona to kill him in the movie, when she actually caught him by surprise due to the Shadow Council's brainwashing. If you're going to base your understanding about Warcraft's lore on the movie, then you are going to be wrong very often.

The Horde doesn't have a Warchief anymore atm. They're ruled by the Horde Council which is basically the leaders of each race (Rokhan for Darkspear Trolls, Baine for Tauren, Lor’themar for Blood Elves, etc). Thrall is still the leader of the Orcs though.

When he challenged Garrosh to mak'gora on Draenor, he broke the rules and used his powers to win the fight. The elements stopped listening to him after that.

@Bollthorn Not really, there were no established rules in the Mak'gora, even on their first duel during WotLK I think, Thrall used his Shaman powers against Garrosh until they were interrupted by the scourge. As to why Thrall lost his Shaman powers, it was because of self-doubt and guilt. Thrall felt like he's not worthy of using the elementals after killing Garrosh out of vengeance and also because he blames himself for appointing Garrosh as warchief (which all led to SoO then WoD). It's more of a mental block.

I used to get off to WoW's ultra serious storylines, but they just seem dated. Maybe Marvel's shitty movie writing has corrupted me, but moment after moment of unbroken tension and drama feel quite silly, pretty fast. Do these characters have anything to live for beyond like.. protecting Azeroth? Fuck, none of them even have significant others that you ever see. It's feels weirdly hollow when you start to pick at it.. kind of like Azeroth herself oooohhhh!
