Extra explores teamwork
The Greco-Persian wars were a couple conflicts between the Greek poleis of Athens and Sparta, as well as the Achaemenid Persian Empire. All three aimed to grow stronger than the other two, but just like in rock-paper-scissors, one could never rule them all! This video gives a short background of Ancient Greece and the first Greco-Persian War.

If I recall correctly, the 300 number is largely myth. The Spartans probably sent more like a thousand men or more.
@PappysDungeon45
@PappysDungeon45 Жыл бұрын
There were 300 Spartans just thousands of other Greeks helping them. This doesn’t make this battle any less impressive though as the Greeks were still outnumbered 13 to 1

In reality, the spartans outnumbered the Persians by several thousand, yet hollywood has vomited this misconception.
@hlibushok

(I know it was already said) There were probably 300 Spartans but they had a lot of allies totaling around 7000 Greek soldiers. Persians still severely outnumbered the Greeks (not the other way around like another commenter here claims) at least 10 to 1.

For some reason I can't see my comment which I posted earlier. I looked at Britannica's page about the battle. I'd recommend reading it.

@@James-zi5en the Spartans didn’t outnumber the Persians, let alone by thousands. Google is free if you don’t believe me. Estimates number 6,000 Greeks to 60,000-150,000 Persians

Thank you for using the red background for the Macedonian ball. Not only does it look great, but it truly helps represent the oppressed Macedonians.

@@oh.69 Every single border country has taken some of their land, and continues to deny their ethnicity, or find another reason to hate them. Greece genocided them and still denies it. Not to mention the more than half the land they stole. Albania and Kosovo started an ethnic Albanian uprising. Serbia treated the Macedonian people as a manipulatable mass, after participating in partitioning them off the map. Bulgaria still denies the ethnicity. All of these countries have also purposefully kept Macedonia's economy in ruin at one point, multiple continue doing that till this day.

Some generations later, the Athenian general and notoriously difficult histori ographer Thucydides (second half of the fifth century BC) went a little further still by trying to make sense of the different Greek dialects and to characterize their interrelationships. He reported, for instance, on a case of dialect mixture on Sicily (Historiae 6.5.1). The inhabitants of the city of Himera spoke, Thucydides claimed, a variety that occupied a middle ground between Chalcidian lonic and Doric, an assertion for which there is, by the way, no historical evidence (Vassallo 2005: 89). The Athenian historian also mentioned that the Greek spoken by the Aetolians was not understood by other Greeks (Historiae 3.94.5), thus apparently proving that not all varieties of Greek were mutually intelligible.
