The importance of materials, sliders, armour etc. ought to be covered as well. Lots of confusion for a first time buyer. Also, Indian brands vs imported ones. Are the level 2 protection in an Indian brand superior to the usually level 1 protection (upgradable) by default in an imported brand? Does a helmet with a Sunvisor compromise on the structural integrity of the shell as Arai believe? How do they get comparable safety certification then? Quite an exhaustive topic when you get into it, and ought to make for a very interesting webisode!

‘Helmets are inconvenient’ is a logic I don’t understand. It’s a device designed to protect your head and neck - extremely vital parts of our body - which you can simply put on and strap in. How much more convenient does it have to be? Until such time when iron man’s nanotechnology becomes a reality where you just think and the helmet appears around your head, that is all the convenience we really need.
@motorinc5 ай бұрын
💯
@abhisheksoni29805 ай бұрын
Assuming that you'll appreciate an actual answer to your question "how helmets are inconvenient" and it wasn't a rhetorical question, let me attempt: They are not inconvenient to put on. They are inconvenient to keep on. Most of our country is terribly hot and humid and your head needs to remain cool for your senses to work. If your head is itching with sweat and not cooling down enough, the possibility of getting into accident increases. Not only that, it does impact your peripheral vision and situational awareness (don't fucking lie it doesn't. Just don't.) Combine this with the fact that many two wheelers in India don't see 50 kmph mark for most of their service life because they solely run in congested cities and not of highways or freeways, it's a really terrible approach to make helmets a legal requirement. I mean we allow people to jump of a cliff tied to a rubber cable, and not to ride through vegetable market at 15kmph without a helmet??? It's really unfair.
@VermiKello5 ай бұрын
@@abhisheksoni2980 sure I mean you do you and to each his own and all that. Just sharing a personal anecdote - last month I was riding in slow speed on an internal road. The road is in great shape btw, no potholes or bumps. There was a Nexon to my right behind me, and we were both occupying our individual lanes. Nexon also wasn’t speeding. A parked car 30m in front of me, decided to suddenly leave without signaling or any indication. I braked hard so that I don’t hit the car, my rear wheel locked, and I fell to my right sideways on the road. My hands and head hit the road first, and my leg was under my motorcycle engine. Now, I had a helmet and gloves on, and my bike has large engine guards, which means no part of my body was severely injured except minor scrapes on my right knee. The Nexon also braked hard and stopped right behind my where my head was. So I picked my bike, apologized to the Nexon for no fault of my own, and went on my way again. That’s the reason I wear safety gear. Don’t know about others.
@motorinc5 ай бұрын
@abhisheksoni2980: Your comment is not an explanation, it's a very well-written rant. Except for the bit in the parantheses at the end of the last para (which suggests that you aren't really listening). The peripheral vision and sit.awareness impact of helmets has been studied and documented - please do look it up. As to your second point, we're the largest two-wheeler market on earth with largest accident and fatality rates. When the rubber-cable-jumpers reach similar proportions, you'll see helmet laws arrive there too. That's not fair, that's how people who won't take care of themselves have to be protected. For their families, for their colleagues and for the economy.

What are the issues with the Ola? I have the OG 450 for the last 5 years and just bought a S1 pro a few months back. There are some quality issues with the Ola for sure, but for riding it, I find it far better than the Ather. It’s quieter, smoother and faster accelerating. However, I don’t feel as confident in the chassis, Ather just rules in that segment. Of course I don’t expect it to last as well as the Ather. I still can’t believe how solid my 450 feels after 5 years.

Ola has some quality issues but for city commute & taking into account its near one lakh on road price (I bought at 1.05L on road- Basic S1 1st gen) this is excellent value for money product. Drive cautiously at max 60-65kph normal acceleration, & after 30-40k kms this will be return on all invested money within 5 years. This is a good bargain for all potential EV buyers. The newer S1 X models are questionable though. But S1 air and pro are still good value.

I believe Ather has got investors which are influencing the marketing and sales decisions. Worrisome is that, from this review, it is also starting to influence engineering decisions too. Knowing Ather, they may not have rushed, and perhaps gone with a new chassis. None of that seems to be the case. 'Rizta need to bring Ather name to lot more people' - that is a slippery slope with a semi-ready product.

My father had the default scooter of the 90s. Bajaj Chetak. I rode it during my school days. I was never an extraordinary rider. But have always been a thorough auto enthusiast. I've never had a 2 wheeler of my own. My parents too were the typical over-cautious type. And when I started earning, I bought a car. So no bike even then! Now, as a father of 2 pre-teen boys, I am thinking of buying a scooter with 2 simple objectives. To drop the kids to hobby classes/coaching. (We live in an area where evenings are jam-packed). And to do routine errands. May be a few trips to office, on good weather days. And of course, in due course it'll be used by the kids. And there's one ulterior motive as well...to gauge my riding skill/temperament to decide if I should really go for a bike. (I've been dreaming of buying a bike since forever. Currently I am lusting over the Triumph Scrambler 400X and the Himalayan 450!) Here're the parameters. 1. This will be my 1st self-owned 2-wheeler, ever! 2. 2000 to 5000 kms per year, I guess, depending on how much I end up enjoying it. 3. Charging may not be much hassle, as we live on the 1st floor. 4. Riders - me, wife and eventually the boys. 5. Budget - no idea. Under a lakh, I suppose. Not sure how we'll end up using it, so don't want to dump much money on this experiment. Let's say, a TCO of ~1.5L over 5-7 yrs. Here're my queries- 1. ICE vs Electric 2. If ICE, which one? Not Activa, for sure!! Jupiter? Access 125? Xoom? Ntorq? 3. If electric, how abt Rizta? Note - I live on the outskirts of Chandigarh. I am a big fan of your channel and hence I believe I'll really value your opinion! Thanks... ✌️✌️

For someone who's buying the rizta I think it's a hell of a good scooter and I think most of the decisions that rather has gone forward with justifies the scooter. I'm looking for a family scooter and this is advertised as one, if I wanted something lively I know where to look, if I wanted something even more lively I'd go buy a bike. When I'm looking for a family scooter I'm looking for reliability and convenience over everything else. The decision to go with the 450 motor and interiors (most of it) is I think really smart, considering it's a tried and tested hardware, with a new system, I feel it would have it's own highlights and challenges. I don't want to deal with them, let ather handle those with the "lively" ones. If it just starts, works and goes, hen it's all good for me, I don't want to be thinking about that at the back of my mind. For me, touchscreen as a feature if like taking a step back if it's exposed. In a car? Maybe. Outside, weathering through everything, I like a bit of precise control, heck the base variant screen and the top model battery would have been a sweet spot for me. I don't have any opinion on the design, it seems okay to me. Not bad, not something to wite home about. It sits right in the middle. Doesn't steal the attention, but thats not what it's striving for. I'm happy that they addressed the belt issue. The battery flap is okay with me because as Shumi said, convenience is welcomed, but I know anyway that with regular ICE I would have had to use both hands so it's fine. There's ample space. The seat is nice from all the reviews I've read, the suspension isn't just basic. The colors offered are interesting. The software I think could use a lot of fine tuning especially with the smart eco, because it doesnt seem to be smart if all it does is prioritise mileage. I think the points that he picked from the chetak were really important and I would rather call that a "smart" eco mode. The zip does its work really well, no complaints. The other things that seems a mild bit inconvenience to me was the 90 degree valve having a rubber base, I say mild because it's a once in a while thing to fill my tyres, and the large seat having just one point of contact. I think there should be some after market spine that holds it better. The points that people pick that your hand will crash through the back rest is a nit pick, I don't know anyone that closes their seat on that point of suface, everyone I know close it from the side of the vehicle. I think the scooter shouldn't be compared with other EVS, rather we it's a feather in the hat of EV vehicles against ICE family scooters. I'm with Shumi on his stand on the helmets. I DO NOT THINK ANYONE WHO CARE ABOUT THEMSELVES EVEN A LITTLE BIT SHOULD TOUCH IT WITH A 10-FOOT POLE.Do NOT ABSOLUTELY BUY IT BECAUSE IF YOU THROW YOUR MONEY AT THAT, THEN YOU LET OTHER'S KNOW WHERE YOUR PRIORITY LIES AND OPENS A CAN FULL OF WORMS THAT WILL BE TOO DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH. That is the most stupidest thing that ather has done and after writing about all that and how I think they did a smart thing with the decisions to build the scooter I find it hard to believe they just threw a spanner and released that thing. With a helmet, that things that ather prioritised are absolutely the last things that you should have to consider better yet not consider at all. Why would you work your ass off to build a scooter like that and then announce that monstrosity with the same thing? Shumi was absolutely right to not even speak about it, because bad puclicity is still publicity. To know the power that your word holds and still chosoe that way even thpugh you know that it might piss some people off is the most wise thing someone could do. I'm really excited to try the ather rizta but the direction with the helmets really puts me in a tough spot. They really need to question this decision and realise where it might take them.

On the Google Podcasts thing... they're moving over their library into YT Music now. So essentially, you can go over to YT Music even today and listen (or even watch, since YT Music has that clever Audio/Video toggle) to MotorInc First episodes. And since it's KZbin, it stays in sync with however much you've watched on KZbin as a video, and you can resume from the same point in audio-only from YT Music (and vice versa).

I had a test ride, but as the showroom didn't have number plates I had to ride it in a gully with a lot of road construction (so not sure if bad handling was due to that). The UI I feel was very horrible because I couldn't change the mode easily or even activate the slip assist or even change the ride modes (2-5 min lag in mode change). I felt that it was not good enough for crowded streets. But I will give it another go soon

29:00 Its the battery basics. When the battery is at lowest or highest state of charge, it cannot accept more power. If you observe a battery charging, it starts with very low charging speed at 0 and slowly increase to max speed and then significantly drops the charging rate at like 90-95%.

Hi Sir, just wanted to ask if additional pro packs are worth spending money? And also which variant among the 3 in Rizta would be best buy?

Fantastic conversation, as always. A recommendation to your editor (coming from a producer of TV shows): The graphics and text need a longer stay. I look at averaging 8-10 seconds for each text piece to accommodate our slowest readers. In this show, graphics which paraphrase what a host is taking are a complete distraction as they go at talk-speed, not allowing for sufficient visual registration. Same with showcases of screens/screenshots. Ex: 28:06 - the footnotes are mostly lost as the graphic plate disappears when the anchor finishes talking. (Not to mention the lack of contrast) Now the eye tends to scan the image first, register a first impression, and rescan to impress upon the idea you are trying to convey - your image stays are not adequate enough for this process - and thus - lots of graphics here are not as impactful as they could be. Small change, but try to aim for the folks who are not speed readers, or whose reactions times don't necessarily compete with a Verstappen. :). This apart, well done, you've broken the clutter of what auto-review shows were with your format, and you have much to be proud of.

Wonderful overview! Such a nice start to my Sunday morning! Question: How do you navigate through the UI of something like Google Maps with just a joystick? How to move around the map, zoom, type destination address, select alternative path if offered, etc? Joysticks on fixed/7-segment LCD may make sense, but on a fully interactive TFT? I'm curious. It'd be great to have joysticks as additional inputs (so you don't have to leave the handle) ALONG with the touch input. Also, no ABS is such a miss!

But, since I can charge the battery at my apartment, the experience is extremely convenient. The pick-up is good. I never had to worry about overtaking. The scooter itself is smooth and silent. The braking is good but regen not so much. So far, it's been a convenient Point A to B machine.

Last Saturday, Ather had a Rizta launch event and an Ather owners meetup in Ahmedabad. I got to check out the software of the Rizta, and it seems that Ather has completely refined their software from what Shumi experienced from while test riding. I did not face any issues or glitches while operating the dashboard screen. Another thing I noticed is that the build quality and fit and finish of Ather Rizta is far superior to the Ola S1 Pro, which my friend has. However, the plastics feel a little bit cheap compared to my 450X.

The ambiguity of the battery pack pricing is not an ather only problem I think, Most electric 2w brands that I have dealt with seem to be super ambiguous on this and the answer sometimes seem to vary from dealer to dealer as well, which also makes the info that comes out of the dealer's mouth also void. From what I've come across, 15-18k per kwh of the pack is what you can expect to be shelling out as of today's prices. Things might change down the line but this is what it seems to be today

Great show again, but I was hoping for a discussion around swappable battery scooters. That said, I’m not sure if you’ve covered it elsewhere in another episode, podcast or segment. Personally, I’m really excited for the day a scooter provider offers a model with removable batteries - maybe even twin removable batteries, that you can take with you and charge wherever you are, as long as you have the right cables/adapters. I think users should also have the option to either buy the batteries outright or go for a subscription model, where you never actually own the batteries but pay a subscription fee for the lifetime of the vehicle, ensuring you always have a fully functioning, well-maintained battery while just owning the scooter and motor. In most condos today, charging setups in parking areas aren’t common and yes, you can get it installed, but what about when you visit family or friends? Having a modular battery you can charge at any home or office would be a huge convenience. Have you heard of Honda’s SC E Concept or CUV e? Any insights on Honda’s plans for an EV scooter in India?
@motorinc26 күн бұрын
Swappable batteries aren't that big in India yet @onemorethompson but there's certainly a case to be made for them. We'd say whoever cracks a well-defined A-Z system for a battery swapping scooter or a motorcycle will be the market leader for a long time.

Okay, so I'm confused. Should I buy a 450X now or should I wait until February (?!), when Ather launches a new product. At this point I don't know if they will have a new product, but since the Apex is the apex of that platform, maybe they have a new better platforma and if I buy a 450X now I would definitely miss out on the benefits of the new platform.

Been waiting for this video a long time. Would've already bought this if not for the lack of ABS. Bought an Activa 125 as a beater years ago even though it was obvious how much superior the Access was(is) - only because it was the only CBS scooter in the market back then. I hate the vehicle and Honda with a passion and can't wait to get rid of it. But the CBS has come in handy a number of times, and since my mom is the primary user, that has made the bitter pill of horrendous quality go down a lot better. Let's see if you guys reinforce/overturn my decision about the Rizta through the video. I mean, I was planning on it anyway - despite the disappointing lack of ABS, it's still better than our old Activa, but still - Ather is one of the few manufacturers I have expectations from and them consistently making excuses about a lack of ABS rubs me the wrong way.

@MuditBadlani5 ай бұрын
@@motorinc Your elaboration upon the challenges of incorporating ABS into an EV scooter certainly makes it forgivable, but the un-Atherness and borderline Olaness of it give me pause. I certainly agree with you that a family scooter can and should be a bit more fun. I will have to ride it too after all. But the deal-breaker is the rubber mounted valves. We maintain tyre pressures on all our vehicles ourselves (better gauges, no pump near enough for true cold top-ups). The Activa routinely pushes me to the closest I've come to psychopathy. For now, I'll wait for River to come to my tier II city. Will still TD the Rizta when free. TL;DR - Get software and valves right, damn you! Also, it's all software, give us a faster mode in a family scooter. Hooligans are people too. 😇 Hoping for River to reach me soon. Will TD the Rizta. Will wait until the next lock of hair the Activa makes me pull out.

43:08 to be honest I prefer 2 wheelers who throw light in the direction the steering is facing. So the belly light isn't odd but unlike iqube the blank part in the centre bulge of the steering really does seem like it was made to have a headlight there. An odd space left honestly. I'm not sure but will an aftermarket solution be available for this after sometime? And obviously not those white bright notorious light 😅
@motorinc5 ай бұрын
In all honestly, we've tested two-wheelers with fixed and moving headlights for absolutely years now and the difference is not that great except in very specific instances. The problem is worse with bulbs because their heat makes sure that low and high beams cannot be used together whereas LEDs can. So unless the manufacturer really messes up the low beam's spread, this is a very small issue

@@motorinc For me its a cool piece of tech that I can use for daily commutes. Acceleration and top speed is also okay considering me "being a family man now!" and cant go alone anywhere without my wife! In zip mode from signal to signal, accelerating too hard gets me a question why am I in so hurry. So, Smart Eco for me is the way to go. On the other side, my wife likes the Magic Twist too much. However, she got a complaint that the handle bar is too far from seat, "she got small hands you know!" and coming from activa, this was something I had foreseen. Also, for some reason she says opening boot is a hassle because of pressing and rotating clockwise, then again anticlockwise without pressing for opening boot is too much for her, as our 2007 activa had separate key slot for opening boot. So, as Shumi said, family scooter cant be too good, is soo true! Other than that, it is having good enough space with frunk and boot to carry weekly groceries, makes this purchase justifiable to her.
