@Mike__B Жыл бұрын
You can look at the budget to see how they funded stuff this last year... I think they have money they simply don't want to spend it, I mean it's a highway make Caltrans pay for it. And yeah they are the wealthiest zip code, but as far as income it's most property tax and homes that have been held a long time with Prop 13 means they aren't getting as much as you think.

NBC Bay Area this isn’t the only problem in local communities up and the Bay Area. But the freeways too, so many on and off ramps have broken lights even the on some bridges.. if you take a drive on 80 at night from Sac to SF you can count up to over 100+ freeway light not working that’s just going westbound. Plus the freeway faded lane strips, and you can’t even see which lane your in. Even worst is Richmond parkway eastbound at night. I haven’t touched up on the pot holes… on 80 east and westbound. Please do a investigation on our freeways.

Do what they did in Salt Lake City. If you don't stop for pedestrians or drive into a crosswalk before a pedestrian leaves it and a cop catches you, it's a $1600 fine. Bam. It stopped pedestrian deaths or severely reduced them.

First off those death rates really need to be taken with a grain of salt because these are small numbers we're dealing with, both in number of deaths and in population of the city, don't get me wrong any death is one too many but for the chart they showed there were 3 fatalities from 2011 to 2020, so over a 10 year period, "just" three, if there was one less then the fatality rate would be in line with those other cities two less people and it is one of the safest roads, so this high death rate really is a matter of small number bias and really shouldn't be used. Now that said that's definitely a rich people NIMBY thing there with no sidewalk and no street lights, I mean we're not talking every street in the city we're talking a major thoroughfare that's about one and a half miles that goes through/borders the town. And for that old mayor to say "we just don't have the money for it..." how much does it cost to put some wooden forms in and pour concrete? Either way they have 6million budgeted for capital improvements, and spending just $10k on accessability, $640k for traffic safety, but $1.5M on street maintenance and 1.7M on park improvements. Maybe they should let the grass grow a little more and get some safety measures on El Camino. But I get it, they're just doing what all government does trying to pass the buck "That's CalTrans job not ours"
@ellvtv2314 Жыл бұрын
We have reached the same conclusion. Glad another person here actually took a look at the table. The Mayor tries to pin the blame on the State due to right of way issues while the rich residents can easily pay for the pedestrian walk way on their own land.

THIS IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WEALTHY RESIDENTS NOT WANTING TO PAY FOR SAFETY OR QUALITY ROADS IN THEIR CITY OR TOWN. 2:54 / *ATHERTON SIDE OF EL CAMINO REAL (Southbound) = 4 STREET LIGHTS / NO SIDEWALKS* *MENLO PARK SIDE OF EL CAMINO REAL (Northbound) = 17 STREET LIGHTS / SIDEWALKS* . WHAT CONCLISIONS DO YOU DRAW REGARDING ATHERTON'S ELITE'S ATTITUDE TOWARDS PEDESTRANS ?
@IGNANT4LIFE Жыл бұрын
it seems there is so much room between the fence lines and actual road that you can walk along el camino while being pretty far away from the actual road, I am surprised people are getting tagged... not sure if the sidewalk is the issue.
@CandiceNguyenTV Жыл бұрын
There are some areas that are indeed very close to the road. Just a feet or 2. We were out there physically just last week. Residents tell me there are a couple spots where you have to walk into El Camino to keep going. A result of a lot of overgrown grass and plants that haven’t been maintained.

@ellvtv2314 Жыл бұрын
The state probably could not justify spending millions of dollars to build sidewalks for a wealthy neighborhood with a population of only 6,915 people. With limited resources, the millions of dollars would be better spent in a more densely populated area like Oakland. In this very same news segment, there is table showing that Atherton only had 3 fatalities versus Oakland 110 fatalities from years 2011-2020. This gives viewers a much better perspective.

I’m sorry for the loss of life and this piece is a bit of sensational news reporting. If u look at death per mile of roadway in town I bet the number will be very low. There is very little foot traffic on that stretch of El Camino Improve traffic safety and slow down traffic for sure but spending millions to put a sidewalk there is probably not the best solution. Also all sorts of traffic go thru el Camino, not only Teslas and other fancy cars from Atherton residents.
@CandiceNguyenTV Жыл бұрын
The pedestrian death rate for each city/town in our comparison is calculated per 100,000 residents. And stems from National Highway Transport Safety Administration data. So, for every 100,000 residents, there are 4.34 fatalities in Atherton. That rate is far higher than rates from nearby cities. Happy to answer any other questions. You might be surprised at the foot traffic. I was out there just last week and in one hour our team saw dog walkers, runners, a family with a stroller and numerous bikers.
