Yeah I am too scared from past 1 year when i studied about hernia but if you do squat, deadlift, bench press, barbell rows,etc. in good form with CONTROLED reps and weight (not that i am saying less weight, weight which you can handle) you will never get a hernia. Plus hernia is mostly related to abdominal walls so try strengthening the abdominal walls by including core exercises 3-4 times a week.
@aleksalazic79623 жыл бұрын
I will tell you right now, I have my second hernia for about 8 months now. Two things: First, it is up to genetics. If you have that inguinal area weak, it will probably happen at least one in a lifetime. Next, it would never happen if I did dragon flags how they should be done (squizing your butt). So inform yourself about the exercises you do, especially the ones that you intuitively know are maybe a little dangerous for hernia (like deadlifts) and only do them with the best possible form. But I want you to know, even if you get it it is not a big deal at all, just have to watch out a little. Cheers

As a General Surgeon , that have examined and operated on hernias before , I would like to say this is one of the best videos I have seen that explain this kind of pathology and will definitely use it as a reference for my patients. Just remember if you have a hernia , please be aware of the red flags like vomiting (because of intestinal obstruction by the hernia), changes in skin colour like redness , fever , and severe pain , please refer to a doctor and don’t wait , and always remember a hernia can be prevented by good constructive Trainning regiment that helps build your abdominal muscles and core strength. Train safely , train well ✋🏼.

Thanks @Motaz Jalloun for this comment. Do you see often patients having pain on the side of the repair but not in the inguinal canal where the repair was done but higher up, at the level of the bellybutton? I had the laparoscopic repair 4 weeks ago and still feel pain, not in the area of the repair, but higher in the abdomen. Any advice? Many thanks 🙏🏻

In 1996 I had an inguinal hernia in my left groin. Whilst awaiting surgery, I also developed a femoral hernia on the same side. When standing in the shower, I was literally having to cup my hand in my groin to stop either dropping out. Frquently I would have to push them back in. The pain was dull, like a serious ball ache when you've copped one in the nuts, but it was constant. Eventually i suffered a strangulated hernia, I collpased on the ground in agony and my entire body was trembling, I was rushed to hospital in an ambulance, and passed out from pain. As a former Rugby player, I've broken fingers, broken ribs, dislocated my shoulder, broken my nose, broken my ankle, and done the ACL. As well as concussions. Believe me when i say, a Strangulated hernia is the most painful thing you can imagine. When the consultant (surgeon) spoke to me, he said it was a standard procedure and they would be using a mesh. After surgery however, he said it had been far more complicated and took them an hour longer than expected. It was something I hoped I'd never have to go through again. Twelve years later i suffered an inguinal hernia in my right groin, but this time i did not wait and got it done immediately. Anyone who has a hernia, including you JEFF CAVALIER FROM ATHLEAN-X I would urge you to just go and get it sorted, don't mess around, because if that thing pops and strangulates it will be the biggest regret of your life not sorting it when you had the chance.

I’m on Day 3 of recovery. I’m already completely off pain medicine. Don’t be scared, friends. I’m 43, in good health but nothing special. I had a right side inguinal hernia mesh repair - and during my examination my surgeon detected a weakness on the left too, so he meshed that preemptively. All done in one operation, laparoscopically. My right hernia was slightly higher up compared to the average inguinal, I’m told, but I can’t say whether that really effected my comfort after the operation. Day 1 is rough - but not unbearable. No need to be worried. I didn’t even need the opioid painkillers. I stuck to a Tylenol + Aleve combo. Icing is a must. I did 20-30mins on/off for the first 2 days. Helped a lot. Remember to ice your balls too - they swell. I iced in bed right before sleeping, but didn’t do it again until the morning. I had help, but I kept ice packs in a small cooler by the couch, and in another small cooler by the bed for convenience anyway. Also, get up and walk around the room for a few of the 20mins phases when you’re not icing yourself - walking sooner rather than later has speeded up my recovery significantly. Seriously, do it Day 1. Diet is super important: you really, really don’t want to get constipated from the painkillers. So for 2 days BEFORE the operation, I ate vegan/vegetarian meals with high fiber. The afternoon/evening after my surgery, I only drank plain chicken broth (just liquid) with a little fiber powder in it, with salt and herbs, and a handful of saltine crackers. Felt SO GOOD after the pre-surgery fasting. Also has a nice dose of protein in it, which helps. Day 2, I upgraded to lentil soup with crackers and some peanut butter on wholewheat toast. Felt AMAZING. I read someone’s advice not to over-hydrate immediately after surgery until you’ve peed. Apparently there’s a risk of the bladder not waking up immediately after surgery, so by drinking too much too fast, they needed to go to the ER to get a catheter. So I did drink some water in the recovery room, but was cautious at home until I peed the first time. I started taking stool softeners the evening of the operation, and took them again in the morning and evening of Day 2. I also drank a cup of Smooth Move tea each day. Day 1, I lay down propped up when I wasn’t up and walking. Day 2, I made myself to sit in a regular chair to get myself ready to sit on the toilet. I had my first bowel movement in the evening of on Day 2, without giving myself an enema, thankfully. However, I had some home ones on hand just in case. Likewise, I had Milk of Magnesia on standby, but so far haven’t needed it. In short: hydration + lentil soup + stool softeners is a winner. I’m on Day 3 now. Trying not to get cocky, but I managed to shower fairly comfortably this morning and I’m off pain meds completely. A couple of other handy bits: I was very lucky: my surgeon gave me ‘mobile blood clot prevention’ things that are basically compression socks that have a little motor that squeezes your calf every minute or so. I wore them while I was sleeping and I think they’ve been a good addition. But even if you don’t get those, regular compression socks will also do the trick, no doubt. Also, after my intubation my throat was quite sore and I often had to cough, which is very painful. A throat numbing spray was a great help. If you have people taking care of you, make sure they take Covid tests and don’t have a regular cough/cold - you definitely don’t want to be coughing or sneezing during your recovery. And that’s everything so far! I was so grateful for the accounts and advice I found in places like this, so this is me thanking all you strangers and paying it forward. Truly, don’t be scared - it’s been nowhere near as bad as I feared - you can do it, friends! Power up!!

This was a great video 🙏. If anyone in the comments is still feeling discouraged about the prospect of training through a hernia...I have had one since I was 20 years old when I was a junior in college. I am now 37. I was advised by a doctor about 10 years ago to get it fixed, but didn’t want to take that much time off of training. For the last 17 years managing the hernia, I have consistently worked out 5-7 days a week. As Jeff highlights in the video, you can become quite adept at techniques to protect it. Hi, I was googling "arm exercise you can do with an inguinal hernia" and your informative video came up. I am a 57 year old , runner/athletic woman who had inguinal hernia surgery in December of last year. Like you I did get back to training pretty soon after my surgery however, all under the guidance of my surgeon and a PT . Unfortunately, 9 months later, I have just been diagnosed with not but one but three hernias-one where my original once was and now two small ones on my other side. I will be consulting with a surgeon in 4 days ( a different surgeon). I was told by my PCP not to lift more than 10lbs until my consult . Do you have any arm exercises that recommend that are safe until my surgery? I have 10lb weights and bands. Thank you, Gaby

As someone who has just experienced this for the first time about a month ago (I'm currently waiting for the surgery), I have to modify and hold my guts in every time I pick up a weight now. I wear a hernia belt to make it through the workouts, but I definitely don't feel safe enough to go all out like before. Also, you mentioned in the video "pushing it back in", like NBD. Again, HOW? Mine doesn't stay in. Yours does?? I'd love for you to expand on the hernia workouts and give us hernia sufferers more AthleanX info since, as you stated "25% of men experience this". I am 49 as well- i have been through some rough old times over the years but training again has got me back on track and following Athlean X along with good nutrition has helped me big time- both mentally and physically. After the abuse i gave my body at times because of severe anxiety- alcohol, bad diet, i find it amazing after ditching, and getting back on track- that people generally think i am years younger than i am! Yesterday, an attractive woman i met in town , who i knew from a restaurant i used to go to, guessed my age at 35- ok, she might being kind but even if she really thought 40, still, i'am happy with that! When I first started doing core training, I watched Rocky 3 for inspiration on how to train because I wanted abs like Clubber Lang. This dude would do a set of sit-ups and finish by twisting side to side aggressively. I tried that very thing and got a hernia above my groin region, left of my belly button. Never got surgery for it as it reduced in discomfort and size on its own gradually, but I can still feel and recall exactly how I got it. Moral of the story - Don’t try and attempt to train like a celebrity in a movie when you first start training. Lots of time it just bs for the camera and it can hurt you if you aren’t entirely sure how to train properly.

When I went into the doctor and he diagnosed the same thing, he sent me to a surgeon for his opinion. After explaining what it was, he asked me "do you want to fix it?" If your first repair went so well, why are you waiting to get the second one repaired? Just curious because I had a hernia and was originally trying to go on watchful waiting but it was extremely stressful having this thing always lurking and waiting to pop out and of course then you’d be trying to get it back in. It’s just such a nasty feeling having the thing pop out and then trying to reduce it all the time. Basically walking on egg shells and grabbing your crotch all the time. I opted to fix mine the old fashion way yet with absorbable sutures. Still holding fine and can do all the things without thinking about having to baby the area.

I had an inguinal hernia at the age of 29. Definitely due to my line of work, which required me to lift 50-100lbs off the floor in awkward fashion many times a day. It was horrible. Had it for roughly 4 months before I received surgery. Got the mesh net. Before I had the surgery, it was about the size of a golf ball sticking out. The surgery was brutal. Bed ridden for about a month, slow moving a month after. The pain meds cause you to become extremely constipated, but due to the nature of the surgery that constipation leads to the most excruciating pain I have ever felt. No pain med could ever suffice. I had to stop taking the meds. On top of that for the first week you can barely sit up let alone sit on a toilet. Also, had some sort of shot in my spine on the day of my surgery to numb the pain but ever since have had severe back pain now. This was 2 years ago. The scar tissue left from the mesh net feels like there is a pen stuck in my lower abdomen lol not fun. Needless to say I don’t fuck around with excessive lifting anymore.

To all those reading my comment. I was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia nine years ago when I was 29. My chiropractor diagnosed me with his finger and recommended I go to see a doctor. The doctor told me to DISCONTINUE free weight training with heavy weights FOR LIFE. As an avid lifter and general lover of lifting weights, this did not settle well with me. My chiropractor advised me to do any abdominal exercise which was comfortable. He stated strengthening the abdominal wall is the best way to prevent issues. I have been lifting weights ever since. Recently, I switched from dumbbell bulgarian split squats to single dumbbell sumo squats. Though I was able to successfully perform a single dumbbell sumo squat with a 95 pound dumbbell for a strong 11 repetitions. I felt a STRETCHING across my lower abdomen. I continued working out and performing my other exercises, heavy dumbbell rows, heavy dumbbell lunges, etcetera. My hernia NEVER has protruded during or after an exercise session. I think a combination of chiropractic adjustments and strengthening my abdominal wall, has been the reason I have had NO ISSUES until I did that stupid exercise for three weeks straight. Also, I have been having issues for the last three weeks and I was told to take one to two weeks off of training and I should be good to go. I never use a weight belt, though I did quit barbell squatting and deadlifting. I haven't trained for three days and my hernia is already feeling a lot better. TRY A CHIROPRACTOR BEFORE TALKING TO A SURGEON.
