@Kwildcat13 well criminal negligence causing death. Better do the investigation and find nothing than missing a Huge lack of security concern going not address. "Criminal negligence (sometimes called culpable negligence) refers to a defendant who acts in disregard of a serious risk of harm that a reasonable person in the same situation would have perceived." I think that could be in the criteria but without investigation we will never know.

This was on livestream. He drowned not far from the finish line. Why didn’t the organizers have a simple motorized boat to get to swimmers quickly and get him medical attention? Not being able to get to him until 1 hr later is completely criminal. That alone is an indictment of how badly prepared organizers were for a water emergency.

The "Safety Plan" referenced by CEO Don Faul during yesterday's press conference is available in the livestream video of the event. It included three people on paddle boards (without ancillary floating devices) and a dude on a jet ski... to monitor 79 athletes over an 800 meter course on open water. On the Kettlebells and Cocktails podcast (The direction of CrossFit: A Conversation with CrossFit CEO Don Faul) six months ago, CEO Don Faul reported that "We still spend way too much money on sport (CrossFit games) ... we are going to take meaningful amounts out of that."

He didnt drown suddenly, he was struggling a lot near the finish line and near shallow waters! And he went quite visibly underwater after the struggle! There were no rescue teams watching them! Although we don't know what happened to this individual, one thing I know is that people underestimate these open water swimming events. Water in Texas this time of the year is super hot. It feels like swimming in a soup honestly. If you are not used to it and have not done preparation you can easily have a heat stroke... yes, in the water. I have experienced the symptoms myself and it is an awful feeling.

Has an athlete it could have been bradycardia.. or AFib.. or a very high heart rate. That can cause you to faint. I truly don't believe it's the warm water... That's why athletes has to they get older a lot of them suffer slow heart rates. A pacemaker solves the problem.. I'm one of them. It's very sad to what happened..
@nicolettekadiri80595 ай бұрын
It’s not the water or the athlete, the onus is on the personnel at the event to ensure participants are safe, there was clearly an oversight in this regard and I agree with the previous comment having two or five or an minimal amount of guards for almost 100 athletes is insane. It’s not like CrossFit can’t afford to pay for multiple guards to ensure the participants are safe. I hope this is not a case of wanting to save money and so only having a small amount of guards.
5 ай бұрын
@Kwildcat13 has I pointed out. I truly believe bradycardia most often is a problem with fainting and losing consciousness when you push yourself really hard, lack of blood and oxygen to the brain.. If you faint in the water your chances of drowning is really good. Very sad to see that happen. You have to be careful. You never know with your heart has an Ironman athlete here. You can be totally conditioned but something could happen.

Only trained personel should help a drowning person. If you try to save a drowning guy, by jumping into the water, he is likely going to panick and push/pull you under water, killing you as well. Their lings are filled with water and their body tells them to stay above water at all cost, which often leads them to push the rescuer down using them as a flotation device to get air. Untrained people should never attempt a direct rescue like this. If there is no professional, you need to reach out with a stick or some floating device to save them.

@doncorleone92944 ай бұрын
@@Chance-ry1hq Ooooh, I thought you were refereing to the people who were running around screaming and you expected them to jump in and save him. You are misunderstanding. There was no trained personel nearby, the people on the paddles are not lifeguards, just volunteers to oversee the race, they have no lifesaving equipment nor training to spot a drowning person, let alone save one. The problam at hand is not that no layman saved him. They only had 2 lifeguards for 79 swimmers but those two were stationed at the start of the race. There was no lifeguard close to the finish line where he drowned to save him - the lack of lifeguards is the problem.

They need to check his heart if he suffered from bradycardia a slow heart rate or a fast heart rate. Or if he ever fainted in this training or light-headed. Bradicardia can cause you to faint when you overexert it can happen to anyone. At any age. That is why a lot of the endurance athletes have pacemakers believe it or not has they get older. It involved the heart it had to be. So sad to see that happen to any elite athlete.
