David Weller in a Jamaican track cyclist who competed at the Moscow 1980 Olympics. He claimed bronze in the Men's 1km Time Trial, being the first Jamaican to earn a medal outside of athletics. I've been trying to find footage of this event, but have been unsuccessful so far. If you could upload a video on it, that would be great.

Great video quality. Anyone know the story of what's happening at the end as Yifter the winner is being ignored by his countryman laying on the track?

@@girma13 I think he was Mohamed Kedir. Yifter was boxed before the end of the last lap. You can see on the footage, that Kedir gives way to Yifter to sprint. Because of this team movement, Kedir himself looses his own pace and collides with another sprinter and finishes last. So he ruined his own run (which could have ended up in top three) in order for Yifter to sprint and win. Teamplay, but how many remembers Yifter, but does not remember Kedir? So is life. So, it seems that Yifter tried also to thank Kedir for what he did for him, but Kedir was not that happy at that moment.

@@darkelth I thought it was Mohammed Kedir too, but it's not, it's Yohannes Mohammed; Kedir deliberately sacrificed his run for Yifter's Gold, and Mohammed (who, unlike Kedir, had no medal from the earlier 10k), was clearly very unhappy about something. I had read about it somewhere but it's not mentioned in my 1980 book of Moscow, so I don't recall exacly why he was so pissed off at the finish! Kedir went on to win silver & gold in the world cross country champs 1981-2, & one of those ahead of Yifter, so he got his reward!

At the end of the video you see the winner, Yifter trying to shake hands with his team mate after the race. But his team mate would not shake his hand. If i remember correctly, the team mate (forgot his name) was upset that he sacrificed (had to?) his race in order for Yifter to win for Ethiopia. He wasn't to happy about it.

It was yohannes mohamed. He worked hard in his life to get a medal but his condition let him down. He knew at the bell he had little left in him. He started beating his head with his hand at that stage of the race in anger. Maninka of finland who became third pushed him for obstraction. As a young long distance athlete i used to meet yohannes mohammed in ethiopia every year in the national championships when he was coaching the military team. At the dinner session he makes people lough. He has a true sense of humour. You wonder if he was a runner at all. He is such a playful teasing and very social character. Currently he is coach of the ethiopian steeple chase team.

@@ababut.tiruneh9504 Thanks Ababu for clearing that up. The media reported that Yohannes was mad at Miruts. Now I know that wasn't true.

I don't believe that he wasn't mad a Yifter. Both faces in the video, says it all. Can't misinterpret that.

That story is cool. I want another that's more recent In London 2012, a Spanish woman won the bronze medal in wresting. She's nowhere near professional, her true profession is making cheese in the farm where he lives and works. I think that's a story good enough to be told!

Finland's Kaarlo Maaninka who took bronze later admitted to have used blood dope before Moscow Olympics. After that, there was lot of speculation that other Finnish runners including Lasse Viren also had doped.

Agree he was taken too soon, but the US boycotted these games. (It’s Moscow 1980)

Prefontaine's biggest chance for Olympic glory would have been Montreal 76. Alas, the events of May 30 1975 robbed him of that chance. As pointed out by the other comment, 1980, the USA boycotted the Moscow Olympics. And by Los Angeles 1984, Pre would have been 33 years old. Unless he'd have gone on to specialise in the Marathon, he would have been way to old to participate.
