There is practically no television footage saved of MLB prior to the 1969 World Series. All you get are those corny old World Series news reel type films. Video tape was too expensive, so they erased all of it to be reused.
@TheVCRTimeMachine4 жыл бұрын
@@rockintetster I realize that, but there are plenty of games from the 1970s on that are available and could be remastered. Most games on their DVD collections that were released in the last decade look awful. Even games as late as 2006 were never remastered. Some times you can't even see the ball on base hits to the outfield, because the digital artifacting is so bad. Go watch the end of the 1992 NLCS Game 7...You can't even see the ball bouncing in the outfield on Cabrera's game winning hit.

I saw that greatest catch, and Rudy almost did a DP - he almost doubled-up Cincy's Tony Perez who had to hustle back to first. It was a close play but Tony was safe. This was during the time when NBC used the local announcers on their WS telecasts. That is why Dick Stockton and not Joe Garagiola called the Fisk HR in 1975. Here, you have the first of three straight years of Monte Moore for Oakland. For this series, the Reds were represented by this young guy named Al Michaels. I remember both Moore and Michaels when I watched this series as a 13-year-old. I had absolutely no inkling that Michaels would go on to become one of the all-time greats. You listened to him back in 1972 and had no idea that eight years later he asked if you believed in miracles. He also called the Malcolm Butler interception for the Patriots against Seattle in SB XLIX. Anyway, this is a treat to hear Michaels as such a young man. You can go back another three or so years on one episode of the original "Hawaii Five-O" when he played a lawyer and had a brief exchange with Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord).

I remember s a cynical little 11 year old watching this game saying, "Ahh, that wasn't such a great catch by Rudi. They're just making a big deal about it because they're trying to hypo the series and get more people to watch." See, after the game and in the papers, they were all saying it was one of the greatest catches in World Series history, and I wasn't buying it. But watching it all these years later, it really WAS one of the greatest catches in WS history, considering the circumstances of the game and the way he had to fight the sun. I guess I'm smarter now than the little wise guy I was back then. Even though I wasn't an A's fan, I was rooting for them because I always rooted for the American League teams, and Catfish Hunter was (and still is) one of my all time favorite players.

Of course, it was the game where Pete Rose of Cincinnati becomes sort of a superstar. Through the power of the throwing arm as he played LF for Cincinnati. Just like Joe Ferguson did with the Dodgers (when the As were in the World Series in 1974), Rose almost gunned down Oakland's George Hendricks of the As trying to score home. It was a close play but George was safe. But Dick Green of the As was unlucky this time. Trying to score just like George, Rose does the same thing - fires a throw from outfield to home - caught by Johnny Bench, and Green was just 10 feet before him---Bench does the turnaround swipe tag, and Green was gunned down. Out at the plate. So what was going to be 2-0 Oakland is only 1-0 Oakland after 5 singles in Game 2's opening innings (1st and 2nd). The As offense never said die in Game 2, and that is how they won Game 2 despite Pete Rose, and the As led the series 2 games to 0.
