The first era of the A’s in Oakland, known as the “Swingin’ A’s,” won three consecutive World Series championships in the early 1970s, something only one other Major League franchise (the Yankees) has ever been able to equal. The A’s 1972 World Series win was also the Bay Area’s first professional championship.
The 1972 team, known as The Mustache Gang, won 93 games and another division title in 1972. Facial hair aside, this team was about dominant pitching. Five starters posted ERAs better than 3.00. The leader of the pack was Catfish Hunter, who had arguably the best season of his Hall of Fame career, going 21-7 with a 2.04 ERA.
Catcher Gene Tenace belted four homers in the series, including two in the team’s Game 1 victory. The A’s won the World Series in seven games-six of them decided by one run-and Tenace won the MVP Award. Oakland returned home to be celebrated by the entire Bay Area, which had never seen one of its teams win a championship in any major professional sport before the A’s.

I couldn't agree more - when people talk about 70's baseball, you'll hear about the Pirates, Yankees & the Big Red Machine! This is typical because we are Oakland! People NEVER pay attention to the A's and actually it's worked to the teams's advantage from time to time. But when it comes to 1970's baseball people should think of the Swingin' A's before any other team!! Three consecutive WS titles?! Kids today at least ones who like baseball should know about about the Swingin' A's!!! :-)

During this time there was none of this "interleague" baloney during the regular season. Teams from that era had never played each other in the regular season and this made the World Series far more interesting.

Don Mincher's plate appearance in the 9th inning was his last in the major leagues. He was credited with 2 more games played later in the Series when he was announced as a pinch hitter in order to force a pitching change and then was replaced by pinch hitters, which was an odd way to end his career.

BTW, the football field ran from HF to CF only when the A's were still playing, they went to the foul pole to foul pole configuration once the A's were done, with the old temporary football grandstand in front of the old outfield bleacher sections which are now, unfortunately, Mt. Davis. I miss the old outfield bleacher sections.

What a 9th inning! ,.. 3 pinch-hits and a pinch runner. Dick Williams was a master. This was the first World Series I remember as a kid, starting with the AL playoffs where the A's beat Detroit. Campaneris became my favorite player, after throwing his bat at Lerring Lagrow! These A's are easily the most overlooked dynasty in sports. An incredible 3-year run, beating the best of the best, including the Orioles, Reds, Tigers, Dodgers. Sad to think of what could have been if Charlie Finley had not been such an ass, and treated his players better, kept the team together.

The fact of the matter is its that this 1972 World Series was one of the greatest 7 game series ever played. Six games decided by one run. As far as Reggie being injured, Joe Morgan had a terrible series. Ditto Pete Rose. If they had shown up, they could easily have swept the Athletics. But they slumped while an unknown Tenace did show up. I think both teams were great. I only wish we had beaten the Mutts in 73 so we could've gained our revenge in a rematch.

Morgan was a great player. Charlie Hustle deserved his name, what a hustler, and a poor rep for baseball. He sure resented being eclipsed by Johnny Bench. Not a team player, Pete Rose.

@@jbyers504 A lot of luck. Came down to a Game 7 where two errors by reds Bobby Tolan and a cheap Gene Tenace grounder that hit the third base bag gave the A's a 1 run win. All of there wins were by 1 run. Gene Tenace never hit a HR in his life before this series. I will give it to you that the A's had good Relief pitching.

@@bengaljam4550 Spoken like a Reds fan. I've heard Johnny Bench cite the same excuses in past interviews on the '72 series. He can't bring himself to admit the Reds were outplayed. Things are often "cheap" and "lucky" when one finds oneself on the losing end. But the Reds couldn't muster more than two runs when it counted in the deciding game. And since the A's once led this series 3-1, it might never have gone seven with Reggie in the lineup. But he did come back...and the A's won in '73 and '74 as well.

@@jbyers504 Ultimately the series came down to one player. Gene Tenace who had the best 7 games of his life.
