I have the Athlon Argos BTR Gen2 10-40×56 on a 17 HMR bench gun (eye relief only 3 inches on this particular model) and it is a huge bang for buck bench scope. I will be getting this model you reviewed now that it's finally showing available.

I have a couple Athlon scopes. Paralax went on my Ares ETR 4.5-30. I shipped it back to Athlon and two weeks later a brand new scope arrived. No questions asked.

I have two Athlon scopes now, their Ares ETR 4.5-30x56mm and an Argos BTR 10-40x56mm. No complaints at all with the Ares ETR after 3 years of use and it's served me well in that time mounted atop my 6x47 Lapua. It's probably one of the better values out there at around $1,200 in my view, and is definitely a step up from my Vortex Viper PST. The Argos BTR is also a decent scope, but at $400 you have to realize going it that it's going to have some limitations and shortcomings. Basically what I have found is that above about 28-30x the images starts getting cloudy or murky as the glass just isn't of high enough quality for that level of magnification. There's also some obvious curvature of the image around the outer edge which is fairly common for scopes in this price range. I'm using it for local 50-yard rimfire benchrest fun so it's more than adequate for my needs, but the 1/8 MOA clickers are an Achille's heal in my view for using it at longer distances. A good option for those just getting started in rimfire benchrest who may not want to dump $1,000+ on a scope before they know if it's something they're going to stick with or not.

Just put a 4.5-30 ETR on my B14R. This seems interesting. I love the Athlon zero stop. I can have a zero stop at 25yards....50 yards....whatever and then set slip the turret for a 100 yard zero. Its so easy and intuitive

Athlon sure has been trying to get into almost every niche in the scope world. For a few dollars more the Delta Stryker 5-50x56 SFP Mil/Mil DLS-1 or MOA/MOA DLS-3 would be a good comparison. Lesser known in general but very well known in the airgun world.
@jus10m0
@jus10m0 5 ай бұрын
I'm actually torn between the two, but being in America the Delta warranty going through Poland is worrisome, especially after hearing about turret issues on the latest generations. Aside from that I'm sooooo close to picking up a Delta.

I’ve seen a couple horror stories on delta service . I bought this Ares as a result . I honestly can’t see how the delta could be better , unless the eyebox is a little more forgiving . It is tight on the Athlon, but I suspect that is the case in most high magnification scopes . The illuminated reticle in the Athlon is easily seen on bright days . Glass is exceptional imo , on par with my Cronus

@@michaellane1316 I also have an Athlon Argos 10-40×56 BLR on a one-piece MDT mount that I take on and off some of my guns when I just want to go punch holes. Does really well around here in NE Arkansas where our ranges max out at 200 yards. Just passing along for anyone that sees this and needs something much more affordable. It also has the exact same reticle as the one in John's review.

John, I really like your review and comparison videos. You answer all the questions I think most people are looking to know and give a clear idea of what something is like to use. have one of these I got for my .22lr benchrest rifle. I am a dealer but this is a great scope for the purpose. I was amazed at how clear it was through your camera and when I tested it at my local range on a very dingy day it turned to light mist while I was shooting. It looked like you had a real challenge shooting the Blazer ammo. I'm surprised that stuff or the Remington .22 in a bucket shoots well in any gun. You managed to shoot pretty well at 200yd. If I may ask where did you place?

I’m not sure why this scope isn’t getting more airtime ! I bought one for $1000, and the glass is as good as the Japanese glass in my Athlon Cronus . I like it better than the Vortex Golden Eagle that costs more than twice as much . The reticle is perfect imo

John, I'm building a budget 308 to shoot at Coalinga in 10 days at Cal State Champ. 1k. It's a Savage 12 single shot with the 30" barrel. I'm gonna run stock everything and I was thinking about what budget scope to put on it. Would you recommend the Athlon or a Vortex or a Nightforce comp. I'm leaning towards the nightforce at 2400 bucks. What are your thoughts.
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 9 ай бұрын
I'd be lying if I said that this and the NF Comp are on the same level. Different price points, different glass. Both have a place in the market, you know what you can afford and what will benefit you the most. However, between the GE and this, I like this better personally.

@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 7 ай бұрын
I really like it. With a street price of $1200 it's $800 lower than the Golden Eagle (it's similar competitor) and offers more. The zero stop is great as is the illuminated reticle, both of which the GE is missing. As with a lot of scopes in this range, it's a bit larger at 60x but at 50x it's good and that's where a lot of my shooting is done although I have no issues using it at 60. It's still my 22lr scope of choice right now and has done great for me.

I noticed on a couple of your videos. You appear to be using a visual aid on your targets. They really help with the fine cross hairs or target dot. Your using them during a match? My shooting eye is developing a cataract. What the story? My club f class league doesn't like them. Thanks, good videos.
@FClassJohn
@FClassJohn 9 ай бұрын
Do you mean a white dot on the target in the center? If so then yes we find that for our club it’s helped a lot of people. Since we are an informal match I use them because we have a number of seniors that attend and it’s made their lives a lot easier and helps keep them shooting longer. But for actual matches you’ll never see them.
@leadslinger49
@leadslinger49 9 ай бұрын
@@FClassJohn Okay thanks. Most Benchrest targets have lighter centers. I'm guessing that's to help accommodate the finer crosshairs like we use. It would be nice if the NRA targets would follow suite with the Benchrest Targets.
