I have always assumed that the pressure difference is due to water taking up space in the chamber where the brass would normally flow to fill - and it still does when the round is fired and the hot brass turns that water to steam or the expanding brass shoves it out - BUT there is a time lag in that occurring and I believe you have a slightly tighter chamber for a very short period of time, enough time to effect pressure curve though thus leading to pressure/velocity increase. I love that you conducted this test controlled - I have seen this in my own results but on different days and so I was never able to say for certain that it was the only force effecting change. You validated for me what I had been assuming - I had previously been questioning my hypothesis.

John what's your opinion on the Hart RAD 2a system. I've been talking about Jason Avila about a stock and he mentioned it as an option. It seems cool but I don't know if it's worth the extra $. I'll be shooting 6.5 and 7 PRC with 1.250 straight 30" barrels. Would it be beneficial ?

Great video! Thank you so much for exploring this topic in depth. I have a couple ?s I’m sizing so that my headspace dimension is at or just over the SAAMI max, and I still get faint rings around the case body near the head-about where case-head separation would occur. Is SAAMI wrong on headspace? It doesn’t make sense that I’m getting those rings when I have little to no room for backward expansion. Also, should I not load the cases with the faint line, but no visible deformation, or would you toss that brass too?

This tool’s my absolute favorite for the task, and has changed my reloading consistency for the better. You have to make sure your palm isn’t pressing onto the case lips when measuring, though.

Question for you. With hitting the ground running right out of the gate on a new barrel, with the common knowledge of barrels speeding up around 150-200 rounds. With your load that's already shooting one hole, how long do you leave it there before you personally start to tweak the powder charge due to velocity change? if you have a new barrel with a new caliber, do you need to burn 150 shots before starting load dev?

I recently got the arbor die, it works great with some brands brass but resized Alpha cases get hung up down by the base. Not sure why. After 2-3 reloads they wont drop in all the way. Not sure why.. Using a FL redding sizing die, set up properly.
@FClassJohn4 күн бұрын
Not sure how you isolated that it's the base but definitely make sure you pull the bushing and try just to make sure it's not a donut or neck issue that's grabbing. If not then it's the base like you said and it's often just a small variance between whatever chamber you're shooting and their dimensions in the die. I'd give them a call and let them know what chamber and reamer you're using and they should have a fix for you.
@anitacoco75424 күн бұрын
@@FClassJohn thanks John, I spoke with them yesterday and they want to inspect the die. I'm pretty sure the Alpha is just a little bigger as they measure a thou larger down by the base.

What about fire form brass ? New action , barrel…
@FClassJohn4 күн бұрын
Fireforming brass (if really necessary for your chamber) is a separate issue. Also, a number of competitive cartridges shoot great while fire forming both in PRS or F Class but worst case some people just take an old barrel and run all their brass through it so they don't burn out a good barrel.
