I have four boys under 7... 7,6,5 and a 10 month old.. I initially planned to homeschool them this year with Classical Conversations but I put them back into school last minuite this week.. they are in a Classical charter school which we really love and yes like you said with a 3 year wait list ... we did do public for Prek and Kinder and we saw a big difference when they started the charter school last year. I'm one confused mom because my husband and I both love the charter school. I plan to wait for the baby to be two or three years then we start homeschooling because I'm seriously EXHAUSTED right now. I pray I've done the right thing

If you have the tug to change direction, pray specifically into that! Don't fear changing direction if the Lord calls you to. This is my 3rd year homeschooling, I pulled my 3 children ages 8, 10, 12 out of the public school system and it was the BEST decision I have made for them. Teaching them and raising them according to their gifts and talents is a blessing that we can give to our children ❤

@@aliciacharles2071 as time goes by (and spending that one on one with them) the Holy Spirit reveals it. For example: one day my daughter began to hum a song than went to our keyboard (without knowing how to read music symbols) she began to play the melody. That's when I purchased music as an extra curriculum and aligned her up with the choir at our local church (whom have been a major help in her growth in this area). Juli and Addison, Here's a messy write-up from personal experience: I and my 6 siblings were brought up with the 'unschooling method' (I didn't even know that was a thing until I came across it much later). My Dad was less academically oriented than my Mom, and he particularly stressed the importance of learning on your own. They both provided us with plenty of dictionaries and Biblical commentaries. (Lots of Puritan authors and early exposure to core values/doctrine). We also had morning and evening devotions which Dad made mandatory. All this is while we served on the mission field. Now, we had the entire day to ourselves... My siblings and I used to play house for hours on end and interestingly enough, we developed a monetary system complete with little paper money and a taxing system from our crude understanding of how an economy works. This was all thought through in creative play and my older brother led the charge--we were all 10 years and under. (I particularly recall trying to copy my older brother's handwriting and create more money wherein he pointed out that all the real checks had a special symbol which could not be replicated apart from his own hand). There were other things like elections, voting for town mayor, term limits, vehicle licenses and so forth. This was back when we had no internet. Children soak things up like sponges and the penchant for creativity is amazing. All that to say, I want to emphasize that although my older brother took offense with the way our parents raised us, I would not trade what they did for a normal schooling education. The most invaluable thing they passed onto us were THEIR Biblical values and lessons learned--lessons which were forged from their own hardships and trial. Working alongside them and having Biblical truth taught to us in real-time was extremely valuable. Those things don't go away, they stick with you for a long time and inform every decision you make as young adults navigating life. I learned the most from hanging around my mother and helping her in the kitchen than I did from my Physics degree--especially as it pertains to life. My desire to be a neurosurgeon and help people in underdeveloped areas comes from both my parents. They'd always go out of their way to help poor people and that kindness would lead people to inquire about God from them. Your character is scrutinized way more by kids and is the best piece of advice they will take away into the real world. Even the gracefulness with which a parent accepts a misstep is a valuable lesson of humility to a child. At the end of the day, you're not really teaching, you are a demonstration of God's very real and intimate love to them. Ultimately, as parents you are raising souls of whom each are bricks in the kingdom of our Lord. It doesn't matter whether one is a janitor or an engineer, as long as God's will and His will alone is one's ultimate love and desire...all will work itself out because HE works it out. John Owens (PhD in Divinity) remarked to King Charles about John Bunyan (author of Pilgrim's Progress) "I would willingly exchange my learning for the tinker's power of touching men's hearts."

This was a rather interesting conversation 🙂 so I am a mom now of a 16-year-old boy, 14-year-old girl, 9-year-old girl, three-year-old boy, 8-month-old foster baby... We homeschool and have done so since Pre-K for our first born child. I was also homeschooled 1st through 11th. I had public school, private school and homeschooling friends. The only thing that kind of struck a little bit of a sensitive cord for me was when it was mentioned that homeschooling kids left you with an idea that they were unsocialized to an extent. And having had friends in every area and especially now having grown up and having friends who have children in every area... Socialization is taught. It is not something that private school, public school or homeschooling truly teach. That is stemmed from the way that we are brought up in our homes. However, everything else I really jive with and I'm so glad you are bringing this up and use it as a conversation! I especially resonated with The fact that the discipleship comes from us as well. We can't let the church or the Christian school do that for us at home.

This was so well balanced, thank you. Homeschooling and homesteading and homemaking although all good things, has becoming the holy grail and I think an idol in many Christian households today. But it’s good to see you can’t fit God in a box, there are so many ways to raise our children in the world. I couldn’t agree more, I’ve always wanted these things and volunteer at a farm, but I’ll allow God to put me where he needs me. Todays Christian is moving by culture and not by Christ. We think being Christian is a pretty picture when seeking Christ is a narrow and tough road. having the most highlighted bible. The influence is by the influencer and not by faith. There is a celebritism of being a Christian instead of just being a Christian that’s meek and humble, living a quiet life.

I'm considering this for our second child. Our first child is much older and went to school, still does. But if I could do it again I wouldn't send her to school. I don't have the advice for you, but all I know is sometimes school isn't worth it because you can't be by their side. I'm staying by this one's side! Until grown ❤ prayers for you and strength 💪

Our daughter has ADHD - we removed her out of public school after 2nd grade due to multiple issues including alot of targeted bullying. We prayed over whether or not to homeschool her diligently, did our research, had her tested, talked to her pediatrician, interviewed diffenret Co-ops and seeked out the best environment for her to learn in due to her ADHD...it also helped we have many friends who actively have taught and or teach in the public schools to help guide and encourage us(although we are still met with scrutiny, doubt, questioning of our homeschool choice!) I want to encourage you to reach out to your local Co-ops, talk to your homeschooling association, local libraries and churches sometimes will host talks and post resources about these issues, and most public schools even if you don't attend offer services such as screening and resources to help with learning disabilities. Praying for you and that resources and doors will open up to help your child's needs!

Many homeschool situations I have observed in my community have been net negative. The positive situations occurred when the teaching parent had a teaching background. These range from loneliness to life-altering education gaps. My family members who are teachers are now seeing COVID-homeschooled kids return to the classroom, and it is devastating to 10 and 11-year-olds when they have to be placed multiple grade levels behind because they can not read. Homeschooling is a massive responsibility. The child's ability to grow in your care will determine their opportunities in life. It's not a flippant hobby one can pursue; a parent can't just sit them down in front of a KZbin video, or a worksheet, or have them play outside and expect them to learn. There are real consequences for these decisions and so I appreciated the frankness you provided.

Thank you! This is such a wonderful and more balanced conversation on homeschool! I’ve homeschooled my boys (I have 5, 3 of which are school age) for most of their life. They are going to public school this year and I should have put them in school sooner. I grew up mostly homeschooled but also in a Christian bubble that has not served me well in adulthood and I had so much fear around sending my kids to public school. the Lord had to take me on a journey, giving me dreams and a lot of discipleship to get past my mindsets and fears because homeschool definitely wasn’t working for us anymore but I didn’t know what else to do because of my mindset around public school and we couldn’t afford private, two of my boys are so behind in reading the private school won’t take them. We have had a lot of the relational friction you talked about that has made homeschool very frustrating and emotionally exhausting for me. I’m now determined to help being more balance to this conversation of Christian parenting and homeschool vs public vs private. I hear way too many Christian homeschool advocates say it’s easy, it’s so wonderful to be with my kids all the time, etc etc and never be real with how hard it really it. You pick your hard, and like you said no matter what school context you have to be an involved parent discipling your kids. I would love more content in the church about how to support parents of kids in public school in what it is to disciple your kids because so much of what I have found since decided to send my kids to public school is condemnation for doing so.

We’re embarking on our second year of homeschooling (11, 9, 7, 5, and 2 years old). I’ve definitely come to appreciate certain aspects of homeschooling - the flexibility of our schedule and ability to travel and learn on the go. I love how much I’m learning too as well as how much influence I have in determining their curriculum. However, I am also undergoing a lot of *cough* sanctification in our homeschool process. Thank you for your perspective on homeschooling, our values align so it’s freeing to hear from you, knowing that I’m not riding the struggle bus alone. I’m not sure if I’m “ride or die” with homeschooling yet, but, like you said, God opened the door so clearly and is planting seeds. I need to just be patient and trust Him for the growth of sprouts, flowers, fruit, trees, etc. A different perspective on the 1 Cor 3:6 idea of planting/watering and knowing only God can bring the increase.

I am in a similar situation. I pulled my kids out of an amazing christian school. I feel in my heart God called me to homeschool but I am not equipped… so I decided to obey (along with my husband). I am super scared, no family around or community. Church moms are clicky and they already have their groups. So I feel I am jumping off the cliff without a parachute but trusting God. I will put my kids in the waitlist for next school year so if this fall I can go back to our school.

Yes I understand how you feel! I quit my job of 14 years to stay home and homeschool. It was the hardest decision to make because my identity was tied to my job but I made the decision because I wanted to obey God even in the midst of fear and feeling like I’m not equipped. I just asked the Lord for reassurance and it was given. I’m learning a lot about myself and my children. It’s a process of sanctification. This will be my second year homeschooling and I’m trusting God to lead the way because I want to be obedient because obedience is better than sacrifice! ❤

I still have doubts from time to time because it has been very difficult to find our group of people but I feel that God has led me to homeschool. We constantly learn from each other and I love it. Do it afraid! Take it one step at a time. And remember, you do not need to replicate school. I would also add, the first year might be wonderful or it might be hard or a combination of both, but as the years go by, I enjoy it more and more, we flow better and I know my kids even better so I can work with them.

Homeschooling mama here! I know that I know that the Lord called our family to homeschool. Did I fight it in the beginning?? yes I did! But I knew I had to be obedient and pray for God to show me how to start, patience, community, and guidance. I can honestly say God has answered me in so many ways! All that to say it is easy? No its not BUT we we have to choose our "hard." This is a good kind of hard haha! Also, I know God is helping to develop my patience that I didn't know I had. Spending the extra time with my kids and really getting to know them has been sweet. God is good. He does answer. The important thing is to ask God what to do, how to do it, for wisdom, guidance. HE truly answers. I pray as we go forward in this homeschooling journey that one day my kids will appreciate it all and we will see the great fruits of it all ❤

You all do not know how much this was needed. Ive been racking my brain on what to teach my kids for homeschool. We pulled our kids out a great Christian School. Our two older kids (9,6) have dyslexia, which we have paid out of pocket to get them special tutoring, and they are doing well. But the LOrd spoke to me so clearly to pull them out of that school and teach them. I fought him for a year and then finally decided to be obedient. The issue for me is I dont want them to get behind or struggle later in adulthood. I have no idea what to do from day to day. And the curriculums are soo expensive.

I highly recommend reading the short and sweet book called Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler’s Guide to Unshakable Peace by Sarah MacKenzie. She's my go to mentor for Godly homeschooling encouragement. Her book changed my life! Will try to paste a link to one of several videos she's made on homeschooling and dyslexia. There is a wonderful KZbinr called Jady A. who has taught me so much about homeschooling, especially about teaching children to read, which I am working on right now. She created her own affordable curriculum that I bought book by book on Amazon or through printables at TeachersPayTeachers. Also, the Good and Beautiful actually allows you to download a lot of their curriculum for free, if you are willing to print it out yourself.

I LOVE what you said about the assumptions about middle schoolers. My best friend was homeschooled UNTIL middle school, and her middle school experience was a nightmare for her. Quite literally, to the point where her safety was threatened, the police were involved, and she needed security to get to school and all she wanted was to be safe at home 😢💔 It was so scary... the kind if scary that now, as an adult I realize it was scarier than I realized when we were kids.

I am a mom from Philippines and we also homeschool our 2 children now, soon to be 3 homeschooled kids next School year. It isn't an easy process and method but i'd rather go through the hardship of it than to send them to school(private or public) that I can't have control over what could be taught there, not to mention the influence of their peers on them. But overall, i as a mom, just want to seize these years where i can be with them in each milestone they achieve and just enjoy and savor fully the years they are still under my care because i know one day id wake up and they're all gone--starting lives on their own..

I grew up in a christian private school, and you are so right. People with money send their kids there expecting to not have to disciple their own kids. Some of them weren't even christians, it was more of a status symbol to pay for their childrens education. Me and siblings definitely were not discipled at home either, but you could tell the ones who were, and they were labeled as goody two shoes because they actuaplt had a sense of right and wrong. Me and my husband have chosen the homeachool route for so many reasons but our christian school experience was definitely one of them. I would rather be discipling my kids all day and having so many chances to speak into their lives all day, and ipen the Bible when they have questions, than do it in the exhausted few hours you have in the evenings after traditional school.

I thought this was going to be more educational on all the different types of curriculums there are out there and which ones you guys specifically use and why. This could be done in a funny way, so it’s not so heavy with all the critics. This was more of a verbal journey of your process. As a mother, with a 20 month year-old I don’t even understand what Unschooling is so defining these things in your sessions would be helpful too. Food for thought. I have watched every single episode this past week and a half and plan on going back through and watching them all again with my girlfriend. Thank you all for what you do, and your obedience to God's call on your life. Pastor JB is "the fear of the lord" expert in my eyes because he truly taught me what that phrase means. I would like to ask about communion, I'm only familiar to catholic church practices and it seems "legalistic" to me how they practiced it. No offense to anyone if I spoke incorrectly. I would like to know how do you practice communion if you practice it? How often? Is there a limit? And is it only wine and specific bread? Either you raise your children or you let an institution do it. Every Christian Should homeschool, homeschooling is just a part of parenting. Sending your children to a secular institution 8 hours a day is unwise. Homeschooling is healthier and a more effective way to raise children. There is nothing wrong wanting our children to be academics, but our goal isn't to raise children how to excel in school subjects but rather to have the mind of Christ. Teaching them about scripture, how to interpret scripture, is the pinnacle of parenting. If you want to raise children who honor and glorify God, we must be the ones who are educating them in our homes. Homeschooling can be daunting, it will be challenging, but your children are your responsibility, why leave them in the hands of others? You can do this parents! God bless

How do you teach children when eventually they will be out in the world how to deal with all that goes on our there. They have been protected from all that and not faced to make right choices when faced with what they will face out in the world.

They are not protected completely from the world, they are just learning about the world and experiencing the world from a different vantage point. A vantage point that allows you, the parent, to tell them the truth about what is happening and help them combat that reality from a safe space. It's like do you send your child into the front lines, or do you keep them in a trench while looking at the war that's happening and tell them this is what you will face - and here are the tools that you can use to fight when it's your turn to fight.

You discuss the issues and dangers as they mature. You expose them to articles and news that are age appropriate for them, and help them to critically think through things. We had a lot of discussions in our home, which made us closer as a family. I graduated my last one this year. My other child has done just fine in the world. He was offered management in his company. The employees tend to follow him as a leader. You are socializing your children yourself at home. It only takes two to socialize. Both of my children now look at what is happening around us and they are thankful they did not go down certain paths in life, they thanked me for homeschooling them and talking to them. You can do this. What helps us all deal with the world's trials and tribulations in life is knowing you have people at home who love you, and will go through it all with you. Strengthen that bond of love. Show them how to critically think. Warn them of the dangers out there and how to be wise. Talk to them about the mistakes you made in life and how you dealt with it. My child has special needs (ASD diagnosis) and is attending public school to receive speech, OT services as well as education. I’m not sure if homeschooling would work when a child needs specialized instruction. What are other Jesus follower’s experiences with ASD and homeschooling?

I have seen people on both sides of this. Homeschooling can be one-on-one, at whatever pace you choose, and you can even tailor the curriculum to your child's specific needs or gifting. You know your child best and can be invested in a way a school teacher never could be. My ASD child has never even wanted to go to a school. Home is much happier and safer. If you're able to make the commitment and get the appropriate resources (and this is the hard part), it is hands down the most wonderful place for ASD kids.

My oldest as ASD and two years ago I pulled her from private school. I was full speed ahead on the homeschool/unschool train and we homeschooled for one semester… it was akin to Julie’s shark infested water metaphor on the beginning of this video! It was awful. We took ten steps back academically. My daughter did not thrive and by the end of each day I wanted to cry out to God in the fetal position. Our public schools are not good. They’ll do for now as we get her IEP fully catered to her needs, but we talk about school choices often because we just don’t know what the future will hold. Grateful for God’s perfect timing.

We pulled out of school because of ASD diagnosis. You are eligible for school therapies either way if you attend their school or not but we used outside resources as well which helped with school. I got to learn his learning style and it was less pencil and pen and more tactile and fun and engaging. We loved it just remember not to compare your child with typical grade level work just work on celebrating small wins and making sure the child is aware of each accomplishment. For example, “see you remembered how to spell … from practicing, great job!” Good luck! Embrace the small moments.

It’s definitely tough to teach a child who has already been to public school for a while has they don’t see the parents like teachers and many don’t respect them. Also the majority of their learning was memorizing instead of learning in a natural form. It’s better to start homeschooling at a very young age. Looks like your husband needs to be more informed about homeschooling.
