I’ve been homeschooling for 11 years now and I agree with all your points. One thing I would add for those with a belief in God: Make prayer a part of your journey. I prayed so hard at the beginning because I had no clue what I was doing, and I saw miracles happen on my family. The windows of heaven can open up and God can literally help you know how to teach your kids. They are His too, after all.

Hi Angela! I have homeschooled my three kids since Kindergarten. Two of them just graduated from college this month. One graduated summa cum laude in Forensic Science and one graduated magna cum laude in Psychology. My number one tip for homeschoolers who decide to continue homeschooling through high school is to gear your curriculum toward their personal goals. If they want to go to college then know exactly what their college of choice requires and go from there. Know what subjects they want to see on their high school transcript. Know what admission tests they require. Start planning for college early (by 8th grade) in order to set them up for success. Homeschooling high school is so different than homeschooling the early years for students who are aiming to go to college. Oh, and my third child is headed to college a year early for an on-campus dual enrollment program at a Christian College. So, my homeschooling years are almost done. :)

I lack in the organization dept. What has really helped me is pre-organizing our school binder for the year. It sounds insane but it's very helpful to have it planned & divided out in advanced. It also allows me to have a list of library rental books ready to "order" 1-2 weeks in advanced which is the only "supply" we need to prep. You can see a great example of binder organization on Melanated and Well Education. Whether you agree with the rest of their style or not, her binder prep and organization is so helpful! I also ad to really look at what we were spending our time on/doing throughout the day and cut back/schedule what was really important to us as priorities.

Angela, I can't even explain how I got here, but God put you on my screen at the most perfect time. I have 3 kids...2, 4 and 6 year old. We just moved from Massachusetts to Florida and it has been such a huge transition. With all the stress and lack of friendships, I considered sending my 2 oldest to school this year. I didn't end up enrolling them, so will be continuing our homeschool journey. Watching this video was just life-saving to be honest. I realized that I became too vulnerable infront of the wrong people (family) who are still encouraging me to send them to school. I realized I shouldn't have done that, but really hit a rough spot a couple weeks ago and now that I know this is NORMAL, I feel like I can just take this summer break to refresh, start over and keep moving forward. Thanks for all you've offered on this video. You are a God-send. So grateful for you 🙏 -Paris Fernandez (Pedro's wife)

This is an amazing video! I was homeschooled, and the one other thing I would add is to make sure your children have other children to be friends with whether that be from church youth group, a special after school activity like music or sports, et. Because my parents were homeschooling me and my older two siblings, but I didn't have any friends my own age at the church my dad was pastoring at the time. It was an older congregation. But my parents saw how sad I was starting to feel, and started bringing me to a larger church on Wednesday nights so I could be part of a youth group there. They did the right thing and I still have a friend from back when I was in middleschool there to this day and now I am 32 years old. When my mom wonders if we made the right choice homeschooling because it wasn't easy, I tell her I wouldn't trade it for anything! It made me who I am today. A well balanced individual who was able to have a Christian education, still had friends, and had flexibility to do voice lessons, and even a part time job later. I will say though my issue with the job was I took on a few too many hours. So this applies to public schoolers and homeschoolers, don't let your child take on too many hours no matter how much they beg you because it will affect their schoolwork and they will have to catch up later one way or another. God bless any who read this!❤🙏🏻🕊

I’m surrounded by people who have a negative view on homeschool. I constantly feel like I need to prove to others that my kids aren’t behind because they are no longer in public school. We are coming to the end of our first year and planning for next year. I’m reminded during this season, not to despise the small Beginnings!! But instead, I will embrace our unique journey. I come into full agreement with not comparing myself with non-homeschool families. I truly believe that mindset hindered me and my kids this year from fully embracing home learning.

thank you for this...I have 5 children and have been homeschooling off and on since my oldest was 4 (now 11). We just had a "lovely" pediatric appointment which resulted in them pressuring my children to go to public school and in me being asked to find a sitter next time so that the doctor could focus better. The doc also bragged about how successful her children are thanks to public school. 🙄 This video was very necessary for me.

I felt like a parishioner in a church pew, sputtering, “yes, amen, yep, exactly, nailed it, amen!!” I have wrestled with all of these, and couldn’t agree more! I laughed out loud at, “except cleaning.” Haha, why is that? Wish I had this video and advice a couple years ago when we started out on our home education journey. My mindset completely changed when I stopped viewing what we were doing as “school” and started viewing it as “educating.” These words are used interchangeably, but are not the same. I am educating my children, shaping their hearts, and hopefully they will be lifelong learners!

I have to say I'm very firm on folding the kids' clothes including infant clothes 😂. I also do the Kon Mari method. It helps me find the exact outfit I want and also helps my husband to find what I'm asking him to. If I just threw it all into a drawer my husband would never find anything. I also do the same as your friend lol. I like things to be neat and organized. My mother didn't fold anything growing uo and it was very frustrating until I learned to fold. To do lists are also essential for my husband and I as it helps stay on the same page with his ADHD. It's so cool to see the things that work for different families!

I love how you talk about reading aloud to your children. I don't have children, but my husband and I have already decided that, if we have any, we will homeschool. Well, we're getting good practice on reading aloud because my husband sometimes reads aloud to me as I wash dishes. We are firm believers in the benefits of reading (particularly actually practical, useful information, not novels) and love to read together. It's not just for children! Reading together is an excellent way for the whole family to bond together.

Thank you for putting this video out. My best friend would make comments about certain things regarding homeschool that always made me doubt myself. I finally distanced myself from her (even though it was hard) to quiet my heart and mind. Through lots of prayer and just simply taking a break, I feel like I can finally think for myself and I don’t have to prove to anyone what I’m doing. I first and foremost am mom and I need that daily reminder. I don’t want my kids to say “we were too much of a burden to mom”. 😢 I do want it to be more organic and feel more relaxed on our everyday journey. I love the flexibility of homeschool. I’ve made a lot of changes…some good and some not so good. But as soon as I didn’t see something working, we quickly changed it. Now I am so at peace with the curriculum we are doing and we are have slowed down to nail down certain concepts and I’m loving that this year has been the biggest growth I’ve seen in all my year of homeschool. (This is my 5th year homeschooling). When I get burned out I literally tell my husband, you have to take over or else it will not end pretty. LOL I have another homeschooling friend that I talk to and it’s been the biggest blessing for me. It’s been so encouraging to have that person that you can go to, vent and they are so understanding and help you stay sane LOL I am also trying to keep my life balanced and stress free by being kind to myself and self-care. My kids have everything and more of what they need on a daily basis…so a little bit of me time is not selfish. I love all your videos. You are such a wise beautiful person and I’ve learned so much from you! Keep the amazing content coming!!

This is the most encouraging list of habits ive ever watched!! Thank you! I'll be honest, I was waiting for the tips of holding to a solid schedule, make sure you do the following things, etc.. I am a Pastor's wife & homeschool mom. Schedule consistency is challenging for us- we do a lot with the ministry. My youngest has ADD and no interest in school, so school has been challenging from the get-go with him. None of my boys enjoy reading, either, though ive tried everything. Lol- thanks for the encouragement about my enjoyment of learning rubbing off. I love reading and learning and every year i start off excited only to fall into discouragement at my children's complete lack of interest, and sometimes bad attitudes. But i plunge ahead and they get annoyed at my enthusiasm for history, literature, etc. Im hoping someday they'll look back with appreciation- and just maybe a smile!! ~Liz

I can absolutely relate, I had an awful school experience with my dyslexia and ADHD from elementary to middle school and my mom pulled me out in high school to "homeschool" me using K12 while working a full time job. For me it was just school at home, so I also hated it. I really struggle to absorb any new material that I am not interested in, but have found that I am able to soak in material that does interest me. I love your idea of reading to your older kids, reading doesn't come easy to me but my kids witnessing me doing it will hopefully inspire them.

I appreciate this much. It definitely takes adapting and growth for the teacher/parent too! My child does have severe ASD and ADHD and other disorders. It took over a year to learn to celebrate the little things. I realised a lot of my expectations came from worrying about image. I felt embarrassed that I couldn't "catch" her up (even though the public schools couldn't and I was doing better). I didn't want people to think she's behind because of me! I'm still trying not to care about that when I answer "where does she go to school?" Comes to the advice not to compare with others! I LOVE learning but I hated school. I was always an independent searcher of knowledge. Teaching is another ball game but I was surprised I started to enjoy it so much. I started to out of necessity. It unfortunately takes a LOT to inspire my kid to be interested in the same. But it feels great when it happens! 😊 I actually like the structure of a more strict schedule (I have mild autism) and sitting at the desk, more traditional methods. But I had to realise my kid thrives with flexibility. Even though many people told us to do a strict schedule due to the ASD. It took too much time away from learning. We use a Charter for her therapies and for me to have structure. So it's been a balance of teaching her to sit and focus for long enough chunks to thrive in therapy. When we learn it's not necessary with most things. We learn on the floor, on the crash pad, in the water, outside...it's fun! One of the biggest struggles for me is still the socializing. I try not to feel too bad because (doesn't help and) my child wasn't socializing at public school either. Then the pandemic threw a wrench in. She's regressed to where I need to prompt her to speak (with tablet or voice or PECS) and keep her safe from doing dangerous things or inappropriate things. It's exhausting. But important. Little steps! Taking a mental health day or week is something we learned to do! Especially when I discovered our local public schools allow random mental health days for kids now (didn't do that a few years ago). We can always make it up. Not a 9-3 m-F schedule. My health was already not great but it really suffered when I kept pushing myself and it didn't make me an effective teacher either! Need energy to really activate the learning, not just being a cranky slug. Lol

I have often thought of homeschooling as a viable future option, but have recently felt the urge to more seriously consider it (and perhaps sooner than originally anticipated). I’ve signed up for a home school conference next month and I’m really excited to learn more so that I (and my husband) can make the most informed decision for my kids.

1. Be flexible 2. Don't Compare 3. Celebrate small wins - both parents and kids need it 4. Reignite your own love for learning 5. Read, read, read (aloud) 6. Know the right (and wrong) people to take advice from 7. Have regular checkins and evaluations. 8. Make it a family affair. Take things outside too. Its also okay to outsource 9. Take care of yourself, take care of momma.

Don't compare. YEEEESSSSSS. I keep trying to tell my husband that he/we cannot compare our family to others. Especially with how the house looks and what workbooks the kids complete. We have far more kids than his coworkers. We live here 24/7. We have a large homestead with animals, not a suburban postagestamp.

Watched the whole thing- thought all of your advice was great. I have a few things I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on. In regards to being flexible.. I personally think one of the most helpful things to me as a child was getting into routine. Discovering the importance of routines, and of doing the same thing every week allowed me to be more focused as a kid, and jt also taught me discipline. I didn’t always feel like doing math, but I knew every Wednesday and Thursday I had an hour long math lesson.. and that’s life. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The discipline and habit forming routines also made me really great out in the real world. Im a single woman, and I have to work every day- can’t imagine how difficult this might feel to me if I’d spent the majority of my life having no fixed schedule. Also, having a goal is good- curriculum is good. Because it DOES matter what you’ve accomplished. And it’s good confidence building to set goals and achieve them. Idk, these are my only contrary thoughts. Great content, as always. (:

Yes! Totally agree on what you said about you need a love of learning. I didn’t have that until I got to college…..18 years thinking I hated learning and was bad at math, science, and other every subject. When really it was just the broken system that made me think those things. I’m so glad I get to pass that love of learning into my kids. Your videos are always spot on with advice ❤️ especially what you said on not comparing your homeschool to others.

Thank you so much for your wisdom 😊 Point 6 almost made me cry. I really needed to hear that every person at some point doubts her decision to homeschool and that it is important to choose the right person to vent to and talk about the hard days. Thank you so much! I don't have a lot of people to talk to about homeschooling, for in my country (the Netherlands) there simply aren't that much people who do this.

Very difficult maintaining a focus as using a program w video teacher (Abeka). Don't want grand to be set for shock if have to return to public school.

Thank you for all your videos. I've watched several. I also plan to teach a christian based cirriculum. I'm nervous but so excited! I also work full time from 5am - 130pm so we will be doing school after I get off work. Looking forward to the bonding and learning together!

Thank you! 😀. These are good life habits also 😉😄. I am a part time homeschooling and I have the same thoughts as a home schooler sometimes 😳, " What was I thinking sending these kids to school! I am going to yank them out of school and homeschooling them tomorrow 😡😕." Then I remember why they are in school and strenghthen my resolve to keep them in and teach them how to be in the world but not of the world. Be a duck sometimes and do not let things stick 😄. Thanks again 🥰.
