Hi friends! We had many of you ask about secular music! Here are our thoughts on this topic! Thanks for tuning in!

I occasionally listen to secular music, and do look at the musician themselves. If their expressed convictions are against God/Jesus. Then, I make a decision to continue to listen.

This is so good. I was honestly very hesitant to listen to this because I assumed it would just be "Secular music is evil." Thank you so much for addressing legalism and showing that listening to secular music is black and white. It's so true - there's Christian music that is deemed "good," yet some of the artists are arrogant, or the lyrics aren't even theologically correct. This message needs to get out there in the body of Christ.

I remember watching this when it first came out and hearing yall mention Justin Timberlake (who I too loved) and then I kid you not he came out with a song called “no Angels” which is so dark not even a week later and I just remembered being like Ok Holy Spirit point made … I have to respectfully disagree with the stance and this is why- I believe that what is more important than the lyrics of this song is the spirit behind the artist singing the song. This is coming from someone who knew every lyric to every genre of every song you could imagine from the 90s to the early 2000 so I am a music fanatic however, the reality of the spirits attached to music became glaringly clear about a year and a half ago- I put on a “nostalgic” song I honestly loved that somehow “mellowed” me out and I was sitting in a hammock with my daughter who at the time was probably 2 1/2 and the song is COMPLETELY clean lyrically but the band is connected with drug use in the early 70s and I kid you not within 15 seconds of the song being on my daughters disposition completely changed and she was in a trans like state, HOOKED into what she was hearing. I had a visceral reaction to this song and now she was was too and I knew immediately her spirit was being affected in the same way that my spirit was being effected by the song and shut it off. It’s not just about the lyrics - it’s actually about the Spirit behind the artist singing it and that became very real to me. If an artist is not channeling God they are channeling something else so just something to think about.

Just listen to the Holy Spirit. Some people have smaller thresholds for what they can listen to and what they can't. I personally listened to Metal and rock growing up as well as every other bit of secular music you can think of, and once I was saved I only listened to praise and worship because the Holy spirit would give me such a strong gut punch everytime I'd try to listen to my past music, that wasn't centered around God, and only centered around man and things of this world. God knew that I'm an all or nothing kind of person, and I can't just ride the line with things. Like an alcoholic who thinks that they can have one drink and stop. I think secular music can be a doorway that some people shouldn't open or reopen, and it can also be a disconnect from the spirit and a reconnect to the chain that binds you to the world. Sounds dramatic, but if God uses music to save, you can bet the enemy will try to use it to destroy. Listen to your convictions.

I’m a Christian too so I get where you’re coming from. Because there is so much that is grey as far as the music industry. I only listen to music that honors Jesus and is pure, but is also still interesting to listen to bc God instituted music. I love metal but I do not listen to secular metal. So I would like to recommend a few Christian Metal band alternatives for secular music, with Godly values. These are some of my favorite Christian Metal bands. If you used to like bands like Green Day/ Nirvana/ Arctic Monkeys/ Korn, then try listening to these Christian bands:Thousand Foot Crutch, Switchfoot, Flyleaf, Red, HolyName and Demon Hunter. Just trying to help! Jesus loves you.

I just discovered your channel today. I am a 69 year old “boomer”. I like the defining of legalism as “ don’t make a law where God didn’t “. Over my lifetime, I have listened to all kinds of music, early rock and roll, country, bluegrass, church hymns (which I really love, to me, they are devotionals put to music), and the last few years, classical music. When I got saved in 1972, we used to sing scripture songs right from the Bible. We listened to Maranatha, and Integrity worship music. Someone mentioned songs about life experiences. I still every so often listen the old car/ hot rod songs like: Little GTO, Little Deuce Coupe, 409, Hey Little Cobra, The Little Old Lady From Pasadena, and others. Those were just fun songs about being a teenager. Other songs talk about your first love and the pain of that first breakup ( which you never think you’ll ever survive, but somehow did!) Some good country songs that, to me had good messages were ones like “I Don’t Want to Have to Marry You” by Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius. It talks about waiting for marriage before sleeping together. Don Williams had songs like “Amanda”, and “ Your My Best Friend”. A man is telling his wife how much he loves and appreciates her. So many others. I think it is so important to really listen to the lyrics. Words carry power, they get into your mind and spirit. So compare them to what God’s Word says. Philippians 4:8 says “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is is of good repute, if there is any excellence, and if anything is worthy of praise, let your mind think on these things.” NASB (1977) Music is a gift from God, yes it can be twisted and cause destruction, or it can uplift and edify. We learn things that are put to music, “A B C D E F G…”, that’s why commercial jingles are so effective. I can name the books of the Bible in order, because of songs I learned in Children’s Church. Some of the great composers of the past wrote music to worship God, Bach, Handel come to mind right off. So yes, sit down with the young folks and discuss the lyrics and the beat of the music. I do think there is a bit of freedom here. Some things are permitted, just not profitable. I will say that as I have gotten to know God as Holy, Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth, and developing a deeper reverential fear and awe of Him, my tastes have changed. Some music and songs are no longer satisfying. I do appreciate the discussion. Thank You for putting this out there.

From someone who loves music of all different genres … I have been trying to introduce to myself Christian music . I realize the lyrics are important for moral reasons but sometimes we do get enticed by the beat and music . Sometimes we really don’t realize what we are singing …the meaning . Almost like the pied piper . It’s hard for me because music can be a form of expression and I wrestle with that and I’m a grown adult of 56 years . I can probably recite songs by memory and it’s vast . What you feed your mind is extremely important . I can only imagine what kids nowadays go through .

I respectfully disagree. There is a lot of spiritual darkness tied to music. We must be guided by the Holy Spirit. Lucifer himself was a very gifted musician. As I grow closer to the Lord, the more it has become obvious that secular music glorifies the flesh and not the Spirit. Music was originally designed for us to worship the Lord, in Spirit and in Truth. I believe that intention has been corrupted over time by the devil and these corruptions exist in both secular and Christian spheres. Not all music brings us closer to God, thus not all music is for our ears as Christians. May the Lord guide us all nearer to Him and remove what needs to be removed from our senses and surroundings so that we may hear Him clearly. In Jesus’ name.

@@anthonynosike 1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. May God reveal His will for us and expose the ways our flesh clings to the things of this world. 🙏

@@LoveB-fr4du The things of the world are evil and sinful. Those songs are just 2 of the many examples I can give you of righteous secular music. Read Songs of Solomon, thats scripture yet it doesn't talk about the lord but a wife or lover. Its the same with love songs that talk about righteous love in marriage. The book of Esther doesnt even mention God yet we understand that the holy spirit is moving in the story. There's righteous secular music in existence.

Thank you for releasing this video! I've wrestled with this topic for a bit. I've heard this conversation in many ways and this is the first time I've heard it preached unbiasedly with the truth of the gospel and without singling out specific musical genre(s). Please know that your godly wisdom does not go unnoticed. You've been so helpful in my journey with strenghtening my relationship with God while also obeying His commandments through the nudging of the Holy Spirit. You speak the truth and with so much love that I never feel like I have to hold my breath listening to you! Since being saved, I've listened to a lot of podcasts and always find myself back to this one. I absolutely love the eloquent way you relay messages.

Some Christians may object to secular music for the following reasons: 1. Lyrical content Secular music often contains explicit language, sexual themes, violence, or promotes values contrary to Christian teachings. 2. Worldly influences Secular music can be seen as a representation of worldly values, potentially influencing listeners away from Christian principles. 3. Association with sinful behaviors. Certain genres or artists may be associated with sinful behaviors, leading some Christians to avoid their music altogether. 4. Focus on self. Secular music often emphasizes self-expression, self-empowerment, and personal gratification, potentially contradicting Christian teachings on humility and self-denial. 5. Distracting from spiritual growth. Excessive listening to secular music might distract from engaging with scripture, prayer, and other spiritual disciplines essential to Christian growth. Ultimately, individual Christians must discern what music aligns with their personal convictions and priorities.

I think for me it comes down to whether this music draws me closer to God or not. Does it bring glory to God? If not, God--who or what is it glorifying? I tend to lean on Romans 12:1 in this ‭Romans 12:2 NKJV‬ [2] And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

There's no escaping worldly secular music. My job is just to teach my kids the types of power music can have on your feelings and emotions and what to look out for and what is ok. I do not think the song Memory from Cats is a horrible secular song. The meaning is kinda to not forget the lives of the older people in our lives and they were young once and still remember being young and can tell you about it if you listen. 7 years by lucas gram is another to show how fast life can be and that what matters is how you effect people's lives.

To answer the question, Nobody should be shielded from life in the real World. Just because something is secular does not make it bad. There are plenty of songs from bands like the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Rush, Black Sabbath, that do convey real life truths that even adults need to learn about. Songs like Master Of Puppets. War Pigs, Gimme Shelter are songs everyone needs to hear . The language might be a bit rough. But the message is about reality.

I do not agree with we can listen to some secular music. It's not only the lyrics but the tune and sounds. Once you open the door it's hard to regulate what secular music to listen to and what not to listen to. It's like choosing how far is too far of secular music? This is however coming from a conviction I personally got. Their is no such thing as entertainment. Every thing serves a purpose.

Sincerely Christian music became a big business. Kids worship the groups and the hyper, not God. The musical quality is also really low. Kind of MacDonalds songs with poor rhyme. Church became a big show with good entertainment. I've been in churches with only an old piano, but we had an amazing praise and worship time. What is Christian music? You put Jesus and God in the middle of the song and call it Christian? Most of those Christian concerts are just mass hypnosis.
