This genre is called Qawwali. Its a spiritual music, here he is praising prophet Mohammed saw. Atif actually resung this qawwali, originally sung by Sabri Qawwal brothers in the 70s. U can listen to the original which is beautiful. Mostly, Qawwalis are sung for Allah or prophet Mohammed saw. No dancing with it :)

You guessed it right, He is having a conversation with our last Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) as a Muslim. Asking for help to show him correct path to walk on as he's lost in his life and doesn't know what to do. It's one way to pray and when you're praying you feel relaxed and already motivated as ALLAH (Our GOD) started showering blessings upon you and I saw you felt it which makes me motivated. So as you see suddenly it becomes a chain of relaxation and motivation. This is the true power of prayer not just this one but any kind of prayer from any religion.

Lovely reaction. So just some background...Coke Studio was started by Rohail Hyatt (search with his name, you'll find all the earlier and IMO better seasons of coke studio) with this concept of just an incredible jam session amongst brilliant musicians. Popular and famous pieces from Pakistan's rich poetic, Sufi (islamic mysticism) and musical heritage picked up and restyled into innovative instrumental and vocal fusions. Lots of playful collaborative jam sessions go into designing each piece, and each piece is like a passion project, hence all the emotion and intensity can be felt by anyone listening. I particularly love how they have invited musicians from all over with their unique instruments to become part of the ensemble for different pieces. You'll see many unique instruments native to various countries. Love how each piece is so unique, and they're shot live in one take! :) P.s. Rohail Hyatt's a musician turned record producer, and was a founding member of one of the most popular pop bands in pakistan.

In subcontinent in both Pakistan and India, singers don't go into head register..... its just the style over here.... Singers here, especially Qawals go well over C5 in chest voice..... You are being warned, this region is known for its music, like west is known for science, this region, Subcontient has so much history in terms of producing great quality art so many great poets, so many so many ancient love stories..... In this region you will find so much variety in terms of vocal textures and genres like folk, classical, Ghazal and Qawali that you will get addicted.... Qawalis are like musical opium, Qawalis keep changing in terms of both tempo and also the melody keeps changing as well, this is not a pure Qawali, like he's mainly a playback singer who is paying tribute to Sabri brothers.... Id suggest you to react to singers like Sonu Nigam, KK, Udit Narayan Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Attaullah Khan Esakhelvi, Saeen Zahoor and also to other Coke Studio songs like Rang, Rockstar, Khaki Banda, Afreen Afreen.....

You should enable subtitles. Most coke studio songs come with subtitles.
Listen to "Larger than life cover" of the Nescafe Basement and you will come across the prowess of Pakistani music.

Kawali are Muslim devotional songs to praise God. Here he is singing to the Taj (crown, king) Dar Alharam (the house of the holy sanctuary), so he is singing to "the King of the Holy Sanctuary - the Kaaba), initialy to God.. But it is also a devotional to Muhammad. He is also singing to Medina (The City - The City of Light - The City of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)). You hear the word Media, City repeated a lot. He uses almost every language spoken in the Muslim world. You really should listen with subtitles. The words are quite deep. Finally, I would recommend The "Al Asmau Al Husna, by Coke studio and also Atif Aslam". That one will give you goose pumps, leave you speechless or make you cry.......
