Costas said it felt like the baseball gods wouldn't let an at bat end while Vin was in the middle of a story and this is a perfect example of that.

Are you still just watching a baseball game or are you transported into another world? A world of hired hands and pet wolves. Is it a 2-1 count or is a young man fighting for his life? Did a player just reach base or did he survive long enough for the butterfly effect to bring you and him together in this peaceful moment? There was nothing else in the world like watching a game called by Vin and this is why we loved him so much. Goodbye to a friend I knew so well, and though he didn’t know I exist, he made me feel like he knew me too.

I am going to believe that the wolf actually had the voice of Vin Scully and actually said out loud to a young and possibly confused Jonny Gomes, "Uh-huh, I don't have a rival here", then never said anything else every again.
