When older Atlanta residents say we miss the old Atlanta, videos like this one bring back haunting memories. Before Freaknic, before Music Midtown or before Atlanta became Hollywood south, we came together as a city during the late 80s and early 90 for events such as 'Light Up Atlanta". We ditched our cars and walked and mingled down Peachtree Street. The Arts festival in Piedmont Park was an event the whole metro came out for, literally fun without drama. Atlanta had a certain charm, young dudes like me on our own for the first time could actually make it in Atlanta, jobs were literally one next door to the other, I bought my first car for cash and rented an apartment between downtown and midtown, and I could afford to take a girl on a date,[they actually spoke to young men back then] Then suddenly there was an effort to build Atlanta into an international city, that effort continues, but the charm is long gone. Freaknic, The Olympics, Hollywood, 6,000,000 metro residents....

One interesting thing I noticed is just how many recognizable skyscrapers were already present in the 90s. I thought a lot of them would be newer. There also seem to be so many more smaller roadside shops and retail all of which has now been transformed into big supermarkets and restaurants. The city looks much better than in the 90s I’d say but the downtown area certainly seems so much cooler back then. Midtown is so completely different now. The modern glass and steel aesthetic has taken over and buildings are going up quick filling up the skyline.

I moved to Atlanta in 1990. This is traveling from downtown, north to midtown. Jin's Wigs at 1:04 on the left, is where most drag queens bought their hair back then. The infamous Backstreet nightclub is on the right at 4:48. The stories that came of that place could fill a library. The Margaret Mitchell house (last shot at end of video) is missing it's exterior wall on the right, due to a massive fire. it sat for years in the same condition and looked like a giant doll house, because you could see all the rooms from the street. It was eventually torn down and a new museum house was built. Loved Atlanta back then--it was a lot of fun.

Well, as fun as it may have been, the 80's were a lot MORE fun (at least early on). Actually, as far as "fun" goes, the late 70's topped the 80's (if you know what I mean). Frankly, it appears that culturally, and socially, we've been on a downward spiral ever since 1982, when all the fun came to a head and abruptly, changed gears, as it were. Why, well, it was all we could do, to carry on, as if nothing had changed, when indeed, everything had. We do seem to manage though, don't we? We make the best of things as they are. I just wish the show could have maintained its "bright lights," so to speak. That way, I'd still be entertained by it. Oh well, it's all for the best, I suppose. Those of us, in the know, find other ways to fulfill the days of our lives. Carry on. Carry on.

Centennial Olympic Park wasn't there, nor the Georgia Aquarium, World Of Coke, or any of many other attractions around the park. There also weren't some buildings there at the time that were constructed around Ivan Allen in the early 2000s. Georgia state dorms were not there. Truist Plaza Building (SunTrust Plaza) was still being constructed. Macy's was still in operation in downtown. There have been changes, but the changes do pale in comparison to what has happened in midtown, "West Midtown", and Buckhead since then.
