The A-10 in general is kind of a retro conference. The size and form-follows-function design of the arenas is what all of college hoops was in the 40s, 50s and 60s.

9:19 Prior to its renovation in 2008, Hagan Arena was known as the Alumni Memorial FIeldhouse. The renovations resulted in the addition of an additional 1,000 seats. I've only been there once, and that was back in the mid-1990s when one of my high school classmates was playing for Rhode Island against St. Joe's.

Cooper is awesome. Love the fan corners. Such an intimate venue, and when you have a big game, PPG Paints Arena is just down the street.

Just a note since I went there, when it originally opened in 1925, it was apparently one of the biggest basketball gyms in the country and people called it “the Prairie.” Vince Lombardi is an alumnus, and before he died in the 1970s, he was fundraising for a 10,500 seat arena that would have replaced the gym. On one hand, we would have lost this architectural beauty. On the other hand, a larger venue would have been a huge recruiting tool in getting local players from the Bronx at Fordham. Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s last high school game was played there as well.

The pool for swimming and diving at GW is actually a flight of stairs below the court, but luckily it has some windows to let natural light in. When I was an undergrad there I was the PA announcer for swimming/diving/water polo, and I still remember having chlorine in my eyes from being down there for those hours-long meets.

VCU’s arena also hosts the Virginia high school basketball championships every March, and it can get LOUD in there for those.

GW has the worst college basketball arena I have ever been to. Incredibly cramped seating, and you have to watch the game through "railing jail" (the bars of the railing partially obstruct the view of the court from almost every seat).

I went to the first GW game at Smith Center in ‘75. Used to get free passes to get in because my next-door neighbors brother was the sports information Director there. I could never figure out the elevated seats in the end zones. You could never see the basket in front of you. Must’ve been a 70s thing. They used to play at Fort Myer across the bridge in Arlington. Army base. They even shared the gym with American University at that time.

This conference is kind of trending downwards. Its overly bloated with 15 schools and its in 3 different regions of the country (northeast, southeast, midwest) which doesn't work as well with the less money and lower budgets you have. The more richer conferences can deal with it better. Its pretty much only a 2 bid league in the NCAA basketball tournament these days. They just had to have Loyola because its in Chicago and they had recent success but is that a great long term addition, maybe not. Plus there's always a threat that the Big East will poach some of these schools. Also, Fordham's gym is old and outdated and they are only in this league because they are located in New York City so the A10 desired them. They probably belong in the Patriot league which is more their level academically and athletically which they already play in for football.

major A10 schools got poached by Big East (Butler, Xavier), the same way AAC schools poached the C-USA in football. It's just a matter of time until St. Louis and Duquesne jump the ship.
