I won a stereo on one of their competitions in 1991, I still have it and it still works. Was my favourite radio station for a long time.

Loved it. When passing my driving test in 1991, My old Triumph Dolomite only had a MW/LW Motorola radio so 252 was my only means on music on the go.1992/93 were my fave years. Annie Lennox-Precious, Lisa Stansfield-Set Your Loving Free, Incognito-Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing, Alison Limerick-Make It On My Own... Fabtastic. Earliest memory is listening to Jane Child-Don't Wanna Fall In Love in 1989. Took me ages to get a copy. Found it in Wollies bargain bin in the end. Happy Days!!!

This station was a lifesaver for me - I had an old 1984 Opel Kadett Estate with a crappy MW/LW Radiomobile radio, this was the only decent music station I could pick up, prior to that, I drove a 1977 Triumph Dolomite 1300 from '91 to '94 with a Blaupunkt AM radio I recycled from my parent's VW Golf, if it wasn't for A-252, I would be resigned to listening to RTE Radio 2 all the time......Still remember such hits like the Nightcrawlers (Push the feeling on) and Robin S (Luv 4 Luv)!

Atlantic 252 though never a 'pirate' radio station was sufficiently independent to enjoy a halcyon mix of music. It suffered though being stuck on low-fi long wave.

Is there no obligation on radio and TV stations, and so on, in Ireland to paint their masts in 'Hi - Viz' red and white, and to have red warning lights on them at night, to warn off aircraft? It seems to be something that almost always overlooked here, as far as I can see.

After the CLT stuck the knife into Radio Luxembourg at the end of 1992, they got their greedy mitts on Atlantic 252 and ran it into the ground.

if Atlantic 252 was given an FM frequency in Dublin back then it would of destroyed the rest of the Dublin Stations like FM104 (capital) and 98fm (classic Hits 98fm) what are crap, i guarantee it.🙂

It was pretty much like Spin is now. Just plays the hits with the minimum of talk. Good when you're 9 years old but I soon grew out of it. There was a period around 93 or somewhere like that they went heavy on the adult contemporary so it was mostly Celine Dion and Mariah and shit for housewives to warble along to.. put me off for good.

[EDIT/Post Script; just now see I'm answering an 11 yr. old comment, not to mention that mine is a bit "all - over - the - place". Having spent a couple of hours on it though, I'll leave it up for whatever it may be worth...] I seem to remember that it was a pretty good earner for them for its first 10 - or - so years, and 7 mil isn't really that huge of an investment, in the scheme of things. Course you could say that wall - to - wall pop was not the best use of the frequency (or the best use of money) for a 'public service' broadcaster, particularly one funded by the TV licenses of the Irish public (not that I, personally, have a particular aversion to profit!) Might have been just a touch hypocritical as well, given how they would run down the pirates for playing pop. Still, I remember listening to Radio Algiers on 252 as a kid, they would have an hour in English in the evenings. RTE had been allocated the frequency× for donkey's years (jointly with Algeria) but had shown shag - all interest in doing anything with it until their Nemesis, Visionary Entrepreneur/Slick Libertarian Chancer,×× Chris Carey of ('80's pirate) Radio Nova fame, started putting out test transmissions on the frequency, with, apparently, a view to beaming pop into the UK,××× actions which seemed to have a remarkable effect on RTE, insofar as (a bit like the dog in the old story) they quickly realised that they _did,_ in fact, want the frequency after all! ×Strictly speaking, _Ireland_ was allocated the frequency, but for practical purposes, it was the same thing. ××Delete according to taste. Charismatic... Obnoxious... Hugely Influential... A blatant Crook... All of the above... One thing is for sure, there were certainly _nastier_ and more criminal elements than _he_ involved in the Dublin pirate scene! ×××He wouldn't be the last to have this idea (obviously). Actually, neither would RTE. 'Border Blaster' "Kiss", using enough juice to be picked up in Alpha Centauri, seemingly made money hand over fist in the 90's beaming pop into Belfast (to the annoyance of the locals) using 'over the horizon' FM.

When we went on holiday to the highlands of Scotland back in the early 90s, Atlantic 252 was the *only* radio you could get... and they only had 10 songs. My mum was pretty sick of Simply Red's "Stars" by the end of that week XD
