Great video. I love the ending. Reminds me of the story of the captain that declared he knew every sandbar in these waters and as the boat runs aground he says" There is one of them now."

I think flying a spaceship would be, but we'd need a few new pieces of tech like anti-aging, faster engines, or stasis chambers. If we invent anti-aging today we can all live to see that reality.

"I call Monica Paolazzi at Wally in Monaco to check on a report that the 23.99m Indio has been sold and she confirms that the yacht now has a new owner and a new name. Built in 2004 to a Bruce Farr design, Indio accommodates up to seven guests in a master suite, a double and a twin cabin plus a Pullman berth. She was on the market at an asking price of €3.75 million and Wally acted for both the buyer and seller. Indio’s new name is Inti." -27 May 2009 by Malcolm MacLean (boat international . com) 24m original price, sold for close to 4m to (3rd? owner) wondering why 14m was mentioned by IC BM? )InterContinental Ballistic Misshile? lol

This was absolutely fascinating - I hate sail boating lol but I love watching it. I was introduced to it poorly like....... "hey my friends boyfriend has a boat, asked us to take a ride with them, Interested? I think it would be nice" to where I replied "sure dear" long story short...... worked the whole time 😡 never been again since. I did watch this whole video and it was incredible. risk of grounding is always high with a 5m deep keel!!! It happened a few times actually, when trying to get into shallow anchorage to secure that "dream" spot!!!! In high winds like that a helmsman is constantly adjusting the trim of the boat and sails relative to the true wind to maintain a straight line, and maintain optimal pressure on the sails so that the wind isn't steering the boat for you. When the boat is heeling hard the wind begins to exert more force on the tiller (you see how he's hauling hard on the wheel when the boat is heeled?... then releasing and letting the boat stand more upright to get the sails back in the higher wind?) Its an art.

this short video really does make it look like an awesome time. i did the crossing on a motor yacht, it took longer than usual because the sea was extremely rough for the most part. had to stop off in the azores for fuel. but i wouldnt want to do it again. 14 days of endless rough steaming. granted there were a few gorgeous days but in general not a pleasant experience. only thing i can take from it is to say that ive done it.

1.7 times the square root of the waterline length gives you the maximum speed for a displacement hull. In other words, a longer boat is faster. :-) (Assuming your sailors know what they are doing and the boat is rigged properly, which if you are racing across the Atlantic... it had better be.) :-)
@hamburking
@hamburking 10 жыл бұрын
With big waves and big winds astern, you will likely exceed hullspeed. Its a thrill. Its a rollercoaster that lasts for days and you can't get off.
@davidbuschhorn6539
@davidbuschhorn6539 9 жыл бұрын
Dave Hamburger To exceed the hull speed, the boat must climb over its own bow wave. That is how "planing" occurs. Essentially, your waterline must be shorter than the boat's bow wave. You can imagine how fast a 100' boat would need to be going to have that happen :-)

To add to your answer: The sea is not flat so the guy at the wheel tries to correct for this to keep a nice heading. Also as the wind load on the front and back sails changes the boat will want to turn a bit, making for active steering at all times. This wind changes as you go up and down the swells in the ocean.

Cris Steg Chris, you are absolutely right. #1 it IS horrible and #2 yes you can dump just about anything if you are far enough from shore. Doesn't mean you should though. Yea its just one bottle but its still trash adding to the already immense amount of garbage already in the water. I might sound like a hippie but I'm far from it. I just like to see people respecting their environment.

Okay, so, it's a glass bottle. Glass is a natural material, as is for example metal. Plastics however, is not. Secondly, it's a message in a bottle. Ever heard of those?

Cruise ships are allowed to dump all their glass bottles in the ocean, I don't think the glass is so bad. It's the plastic that makes its way into the ocean that's bad.

Two of the girls (not that hard to spot witch ones) are the owner and a friend. But the rest were all world class sailors. But of course this race is more of a cruice than an actual race

One little glass bottle, oh come on. Ships, fishermen, entire countries dump hundreds of tons of plastic and crap into it every day. Message in a bottle is a tradition and it's either going to float or sink but it's not going to harm anyone or anything. Sure it didn't look good but your car does more damage to the planet in an hour, everything around you that you buy and use is mostly non-biodegradable and can harm animals and the planet - a little glass bottle is the least of our worries. The antifoul eroding on the bottom of the boat is more toxic to wildlife.

i agree - these guys act like rich pricks - chucking shit in the ocean is disrespectful - are there decent sailors running the boat while the rich faces eat sushi, do naff fashion and get photographed?

And the last time you were sailing with a boat speed of 25kts+ was when again? On what? There are worse ways to spend two weeks than a TRANSAT on a Wally with Volvo level crew. Better ones, sure, but nothing was broken. No broken records, and no broken boats. Even you have to admit there are worse ways to spend two weeks.

Sail to enjoy peace, quiet, and the rhythm of the sea, then when finally miles from other sources of noise, you decide to pollute the mood by blasting rubbish on your sound system. Argh!

Thanks for the video, it keeps me inspired with my schooling and goals. Its mass nice to see young people, both women and men working on the ship together. I loved seeing the boredom and play, the music and focus. My questions: When you're in a swell do you use your body as a counter balance, is it effective? (I've never sailed with more then 2 other people) Did you catch fish? Would you rather race or take your time. If take your time, how long would you expect it to take in such a ship? -tara

Haha I can only answer one question but on a boat this large, the human weight means next to nothing. They have a keel (heavy weight below the water line) that probably weighs a few tons that provides all the counterbalance they need
