Bismarck was a really second rate ship. Her design was obsolete, with vital electrical systems exposed above the armour deck. Hard to sink, but easy to disable, as in her final battle. In a real fight KGV would have sunk Bismarck, as POW would have done in Denmark Strait had she been fully worked up and her guns not jammed. She damaged |Bismarck far worse than Bismarck damaged her.

The KGV would beat the Bismarck in a straight fight. Standard 14” AP shells could punch straight through German armour, as proved with the Scharnhorst, which had heavier armour than the Bismarck.

It's a turn-based game. Each turn involves 1. movement 2. aiming 3. shooting. This does not mean that the ships stop moving to shoot, it's just that they only move a certain distance in each turn, and they also shoot once during that turn.

The best gunnery at Jutland came from the 5th Battle Squadron (Queen Elizabeth's) and the Grand Fleet. British Radar directed gunnery was also superior in WW2 when you look at the battle of the North Cape. Also Warspite has the longest range hit on an opposing ship recorded.

I've watched these videos too; enjoyable but kinda predictable because the bigger guns always win. 15 inch versus 14 inch. Depending on the weather, if this clash really occurred, the KGV would turn and run, maybe wait for night and employ radar. It's suicide to fight a ship with heavier guns.

Paul Salmon No Prince of Wales (same class) had to retreat after Hood blew up and Bismarck and Prinz Eugen were able to deal heavy damage to the Pince of Wales

PoW was straight from the builders' yard and still had civilian workers aboard trying to debug the main armament. A fully worked-up and operational KGV Class ship would likely have the edge on a Bismarck Class one in a straight gunnery duel. They represented a far more advanced design overall and if anything were even better protected. Their only comparative drawback being the light (for the time) 14" main battery which was retained as build was too advanced to invoke London Treaty escalation provisions and reconfigure for 9x16". A 16" armed KGV near-equivalent like the US North Carolina Class would've comfortably whipped Bismarck.

Oh dear. Another one. KGV's armour was not just better distributed and configured but thicker too in respect of virtually every vital area. For example main belt max 15" vs 12.6" in Bismarck. Though I've no intention of parroting a whole list of comparative stats anyone can look up for themselves. Fact is, the Bismarck class were the first full scale battleships designed and built in Germany since the WW1 Bayerns and despite the (what else would you expect?) superb build quality and high grade armour, this showed in several ways. While British cementated armour was also reckoned among the best in the world and UK designers had the benefit of experience with both the upgrading of the QE and R Class units and the build of the postwar Nelsons, themselves revolutionary in several respects. Put simply, KGV was a more modern design with a better armour plan and using material of a roughly comparable quality in yet greater thickness. Re guns, I think I already alluded to KGV's 14" 45cal main battery as being on the light side for the period and stated briefly why it was adopted. Even so, the 1,590-pound AP shells it delivered to a max range of 38,600yds were still extremely formidable with good armour penetration. In comparison, Bismarck's 15" fired a 1,763lb shell to a max range of 39,900 yds. Total broadside weights were therefore 15,900lbs and 14,104lbs respectively. On the whole, not all that much in it. And no one mentioned Hood, an Admiral Class battlecruiser laid down in WW1 and never fully modernised in any case.

King George V hadn't even had a shakedown cruise, as memory serves. In any event, it was still working out teething issues, especially with its guns, and was not fully combat ready. So it was naturally at a disadvantage against Bismarck.

In the hunt for the Bismarck, KGV was actually quite experienced. It was PoW that was inexperienced. Both had issues with their quad mountings, but KGV to lesser but noteworthy extent.

@@thatontariofarmer couldn't agree more. The Bismark is way overhyped. The sinking of the Hood (a ship in desperate need of modernization and armour upgrades) gave it a bit of of an undeserved reputation.

@@thatontariofarmer The KGV were the best armoured of all WW2 battleships except Yamato, and their 14'' guns had excellent ballistic penetration with a very big bursting charge. And they had 10 of them. Once the turret systems were sorted, they were fearsome.

@@harrysmith1070 exactly right. Although, I wouldn't say the Hood was "hopelessly outclassed". At a disadvantage, yes, but the battle could have gone very differently very easily I think, even without the comprehensive modernization the Hood was supposed to have received prior to the outbreak of war. Really, given the Bismark's turtle-back armor scheme that left much of its essential combat equipment completely exposed, one decent hit from the Hood could have left the Bismark without any ability to fight back (as shown when the Rodney straddled it!). The Bismark was extremely tough and very hard to sink, but could be rendered combat-ineffective very easily. Really was just a case of "whoever hits first, wins" at the Battle of the Denmark Straight
