Absolutely love this whole yard. On the topic of water features.. I put a beautiful 5 tier cascading water feature right under my bedroom window once. Boy was it part of our lives. Love this garden design and water feature as well! On our small urban terraced lot - 5500 sf (though directly adjacent a wild canyon and a couple miles from the ocean) in arid SoCa we lack a swimming pool but we have five water features: a lion’s head spitter onto a hanging wall bowl out front; a semi-circular former planter adjacent a flagstone dining terrace with a center mounted bird’s bath fountain overflowing into the small pool; a 5’ diameter pond with an antique hand pump filler and stone coping and benches, and two “horse troughs” between planted concrete urns on the lower terrace with copper tubing mounted on mesh powder coated frames against a green planted wall backdrop. All features have professional lighting and life is magical because of them.

I used to think like that, but after getting into the interior design industry, and seeing how people get scammed, or scam themselves doing dyi...I would defend the cost of professional, quality work. People just don't realize the equipment, materials (you don't see) and the engineering/planning that is involved. All outside the labor and the materials you can see. Also, this is probably a company that backs up their work and wont be avoiding you if you got a problem a year down the road. That should stand for something.

So beautiful. I don't have the money to make a pond like that, but I built myself a pond with fish and I managed for the past 8 years to have clear water all year around and I manually clean the pond about twice a week (hover the debris from the fish out from the bottom and do algea management). It looks good and it is totally relaxing and cool to have this pond. People are always astonished about the clear water. I live in hot Thailand with the sun shining all day on my pond. Most ponds I see around here have green water and you can't even see the fish swimming... that's not the case with my pond. Even my filter system is a very cheap one, made of plastic drawers with gravel and filters in it, which I exchange about once in 3 months.

Couple of important questions beyond cost to build. What is cost to maintain? How often do you have to put new water in, ie: how fast do you lose water to evaporation? How do you keep water clean snd free of bacteria like legionnaires, etc? How do you keep nature from moving in? Mosquitoes? Other bugs? Snakes, leeches? I’m assuming you don’t heat it? I’d love to do this and stock fish. Does that then preclude swimming use?
@AtlantisWaterGardens

All great questions! Nature will be nature. I swim in natural lakes and bodies of water quite frequently, in fact my whole life. If I worried about all that I’d never step foot in the water. Normal evaporation affects ponds differently depending on location. Cost to maintain is similar, if not less, than a chlorinated swimming pool. Hope this helps

Love this pond! Big fan of yours Jaak and the whole aquascape scene. Having just bought my house last year, it'll be a bit until we can save up enough to get going. We need to go big, like maybe a 20x25 or 30. We just moved to Sparta and actually pass by your shop often. Would love to pick your brain on designs and options. We are basically on a massive slope and have an awesome chunk of property to play with.

Jaak, your rec ponds are amazing. I've been hooked on your videos, researching options to build a small pond of my own. Two questions: 1. How long do the liners last? Realistically, when will I need to replace them? Is replacing liners a big job in itself? 2. Do we need to have the pump for the filtration unit running 24x7? Thanks for showing us what is possible with natural pools!
@AtlantisWaterGardens
@AtlantisWaterGardens 4 жыл бұрын
The liner is made of EPDM rubber and our ponds are built with rock and gravel that covers all the surface of the liner. What kills a liner is U/V light from the sun. As long as it's covered it greatly increases the life span of the liner (well over 20 years) and yes you need a pump for the filtration. Hope this helps!

These guys IMO are at the top of their game so if they can charge that then so be it. TBH im learning a lot from their vids and currently building my own. People wigging out about the price - sometimes you do things slowly over time, adding to it as you have the money and the time to work on it. Things are more expensive when you do it all at once but space it out and it is manageable. Even the landscaping is expensive when you want it overnight but simply buying younger plants or growing your own could save a lot of money!

Beautiful pond for sure, Always fun to see the difference in perspective from the rich and poor. Lol. That pond costs almost as much as my house. I have almost 2 acres and want to make a swimming pond. Though couldnt justify spending that much. I'd like to know the material costs, as a diy kind of guy I'd be doing it myself. Good to see they can be so nice though

Looks amazing! But I have serious misgivings about swimming in water that hasn't been treated with chlorine or ozone or similar. You probably don't have to worry about amebic meningitis in NY's climate, but there was a recent death in CA (07/08/21) and another this month in NC. Admittedly rare - but *unheard of* in properly maintained chlorinated pools. More common are _Pseudomonas_ ear infections. All that said, if I could afford a rec pond I'd still get one. It'd be worth it to wade among the water lilies.

Amazing work. Price is steep but for the quality it doesn't surprise me. We live in Florida near the Everglades and there's no keeping critters out of the yard. I'd love a place to swim like this, but snakes and gators in some of our natural ponds already, so I think it'd be a hard sell to get anyone into the water iLOL. It's a shame because we're making a botanical garden style property and this would be awesome. Thanks for sharing details of the build as well as pricing always super helpful.
