@Atlas Survival Shelters A quick question for you, I notice you weld directly onto the steel without preparing the surfaces. When I have watched others weld they always abraid the surfaces with a grinder or a steel wire disk, is it a better weld if you don't do this ? I am not a wielder but have worked on robotic welders and I would love to know why it is done this way. I understand the gas creates a barrier to keep the oxygen away and prevent oxidation, does this gas also remove surface contamination and rust ? I love watching the construction and installation of any bunkers. I really enjoy watching the different methods employed to add structural strength and rigidity that vary depending on the shapes and sizes of the bunkers as well as the thought that goes into providing services such as power, water, sewage and air supply. I have spent my life as an electrical engineer including many years serving in the Royal Navy on nuclear submarines and have often wondered how the welds in the pressure hull that our lives depended on so much were done. Unfortunately a spinal injury from a fall and many years of over exertion have caught up with me and I am completely bedbound now. I do miss the work and the highly skilled people I worked with that I affectionately refer to as my second family. It is watching videos like yours that help me keep my mind active and help expand my knowledge. Thank you for the work and time you put into your videos. Without channels like yours and the thousands of hours of content on KZbin from everyone in the community I am sure I would have lost my sanity as well as my mobility. Keep up the great work and content my friend. Stuart.

I used to weld in a ship yard. No, we never would prepare the surfaces. Of course we had to knock off the slag for a second pass.
@komoru2 жыл бұрын
They've probaby tested out various types of welding wires that can work good with welding on mill scale (unprepared) surfaces. It's also probably a cost/labor/time decision that the increased time/materialls/labor to spend prepping surfaces won't make a better product or increase sales price enough to do it.

Watertight is a great feature, but how do you keep the whole shelter from floating up out of the ground when the water table rises? I've seen several instances where old underground, empty fuel tanks relocate themselves above ground with saturated soil and a few inches of flood water. A shelter like the size you described has roughly close to 200,000lbs of buoyancy force.

In submarine construction they build the inside before (sometimes in complete modules they slide in the tubes) and only after they weld it, to not to have to struggle to build everything from inside. In (industrial) sail boat construction they build in the hull, but without roof and bridge. Perhaps this method can be used in these shelters to spare many hours of work ?

Always wanted one my self. But i dont think i can get a 4person bomb shelter for 25k so lol My budget is tight and have 50k. using 25k of that for land some place. I could go a bit higher but prices keep rising so...... In any case ill see what i can gather once i have the land? I plan to build my own log cabin with the timber from the land as well as using stone from the local land for foundations. So the coast of building the home will be minimal as i work in the field of construction. I just tell my son and son in law they have to help me if they ever want to use the cabin in the woods! LOL Since im looking for land in WV or maybe TN i hope to get a mix of mountainous and some flat land. Of course all of it with timber on it. Undeveloped land is the best for this type of project. If there are caves they could be use as part of the bunker construction if they are stable? Putting the escape hatch in a position to open up into the cave? Of course dreams can come true?lol But im more concerned with putting the bunker in the ground 1st/ Maybe build a small shed over the hatch with a raised floor. Then later come in and build a home over it. All in the future as i still havnt found the right land as of yet? :>/ My one requirement is year round moving water on the land. Also it dosnt have to be in the mountains but thats a plus. I dont want to live on all open land either. So hilly to mountainous is preferred. Open flat land dosnt give a position any kind of cover or blast protection. So buying 1/2 a mountain along with 1/2 the valley floor is a great place for bugging out. The surrounding Mts. and timber/woods will give you much better protection from any localized blasts of any kind whether man made or natural, as in a meteor or asteroid. If you dont know its coming you have to survive the disaster to get to your bunker in the 1st place. If its man made your would most likely know to get in before it comes ,unless you live under a rock. All i know is i need a 4to6person bunker that can be lived in for up to a year.....cheap?lol With a decontamination room. Most likely after said disaster i would have my empty nest fill. So my wife and i would already be inside awaiting our kids and grandbabies arrival. We all know how kids can be they are always late. If it could be connected to a cave on the land then that cave could be used for storage and other parts of the bunker so that the interior of the bunker could be used for people space rather then air system and garbage disposal ,food storage and anything else that would take up space in the bunker it self? By the way i saw a unicorn yesterday too! ROFL Maybe some day?! Awesome video
