Atlas copco lfx oil free Compressor repair part 1

I have had this Atlas copco LFX compressor for around 7 years, bought used and was originally owned by the NHS so has seen some use. I think it is around 15 years old so is doing pretty good.
It has been getting noisier over the last year and recently it started to make a loud squeaking noise and then would randomly seize up, but when stopped it would free up again.
This video will cover disassembly and diagnosis of this issue. Part 2 will cover reassembly. It is worth noting this LFX model appears to have all the same part numbers as the newer LXF version, I used the parts diagram from the LXF as a rough guide as i couldnt find one for the LFX.

hello, i also have an lfx 1.0, but the problem with mine was that the ptfe piston ring was cracked, i have trouble finding another piston ring made the teflon material, would you help? great videos thanks!

Hey, I answered this in the comments of part two as well but here it is- the parts list is here- www.surgevessels.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/LFX-Parts-List.pdf And the part number for the piston ring of the lfx1.0 is 2901 0981 00 if you google this number you will find a few places around the world who sell it, it isnt cheap though! first thing i would do is disassemble it! mine was a bearing failure so that is a good place to start looking. another possibilty is piston ring failure with bits of broken ring getting jammed between the piston and cylinder wall. my money is on bearings though.

New Yorkshire Workshop i took it apart up till the engine casing, i found when i removed the piston head casing the motor moved freely as soon as I put it back together the motor was stiff again

@@ConvBoy1 I see, so does the piston move freely inside the cylinder when it was apart? if yes then it is probably a similar problem to mine, if the bearings are not seated properly then it will bind up when assembled, you might have to look more closely at the bearings, they might seem ok when turning by hand but be completely buggered inside.

New Yorkshire Workshop yes piston and motor shaft moves freely in cylinder. Hard to believe pistons because the compressor has only done 266hrs must be due to age.

@@ConvBoy1 yeah the atlas copco service schedules are usually listed by the thousands of hours! they are built to be used. could possibly be that someone has disconnected the hour meter in the past though. mine doesnt even have a meter so i cant compare but it was used by the NHS before and then the guy i bought it from had used it for a while. id definitely look at the position of the two bearings between the crank and con rod because if they have slid far enough the piston will sit at an angle and bind up in the cylinder. you ahould have about 2mm gap between crank and con rod. those two bearings are 6204-2RSH, the originals might have been stainless, these are a cheaper alternative. also the big shaft bearing is 2RS1 and smaller one is 6205-2RSH
