Honestly, it’s not the decoder Atlas has always had amazingly smooth very very good slow speed control in their locomotives. I have three of the train masters and HO scale with QSI sound decoder and they’re just as smooth. One thing I miss and wish they would start utilizing QSI sound decoder again is the active air brake function where you could have your deceleration set to max and if you needed to stop the train faster, you would press F7 you would hear air release until you pressed F7 again or until the air tank was depleted in which would be maximum breaking for the locomotive And it actually worked just like in real life.

The Qsi versions still run nice. They have features way ahead of others. And work well in DC.Very misunderstood by many.

Good review. It can be mentioned that SP, like many running the "Babies", usually ran long hood forward until later on in their lives...

I remember seeing these SP locos in service between San Francisco and San Jose hauling commuter trains. I rode those trains to my job in San Francisco in the late 60s, and early 70s when the FMs were later replaced by SDP45s and GP40P-2s. SP originally used these in New Mexico and El Paso TX, but they overheated in the desert. SP then moved them all to the colder San Francisco climate and placed them in Peninsula commuter service hauling gallery cars and older 1920s vintage Harriman coaches. Too bad you did not run the FM at full track speed so I could hear the diesel sound then. The idle speed sounds correct or close and the same for the Nathan M5 air horn.

Every time I see one of these high nose locomotives it makes me wonder what was so important that they would limit sight so much. I know this is a 50s design and they were coming off steam engines with worse sight limitations but why. Anyway, great review and video, Jersey Bill

I believe there are a few things wrong with these, first off, no sun shades? Also, the number 4810 was the black widow scheme number. When SP repainted into bloody nose(mid 60's) the numbers were in the 3000s, My bloody nose is 3029 while my black widow FM's are 4805 and 4809. Just some info on the prototypes, dont shoot the messenger. lol

Actually they held those 4800 numbers in grey and scarlet in the early 60s. They went to the 3000s in 1965 as part of the general SP renumbering at that time.

Not a big deal, but noticed that the front & rear hand rails are solid above the safety chains - kind of inhibits a safe passage between units…

@@AllenCNW441look at photos, it's the way they were. The bar can be dropped. Note the height difference made going to another loco unusually dangerous. May be why it's that way
