Not sure if anyone has mentioned this in the other comments but tou come across as though the cough you had was due to high altitude pulmonary oedema, a potentially fatal condition. Slow acclimatisation would help. Also there are medications that cam ne used to try and help reduce incidence of occurrence. Stay safe out there!

Josh, is this the only race/place where you get sick? It happened last year too right? Maybe show up a few weeks early next year, to get exposed/acclimated to the place before the race? Go tour the course first before racing it? Just suggestions.

This was last years race. Definitely a good idea to go out much earlier to acclimatise better.
