Variable Speed HVAC FINALLY explained by Carrier expert!!

It is a total shame that all the great advantages and sophisticated technology of the Infinity system can be completely negated by a poorly thought out and implemented dealer install. The previous owner of our house had the Infinity 5 speed complete system installed in the house we now own. It's a split level house with three levels. All the indoor hvac equipment plus air return and thermostat were installed in the lower level. Obiously the thermostat has no idea what the temperature is on the upper levels. It could be 74F on the lower level and 80F on the third level and if the thermostat is set at 75F the unit will not turn on to cool. In this configuration either the system was off, or when it finally turned on and started drawing that 80F air out of the upper level it immediately zoomed to speed 5 and stayed there flat out until the set point was reached. It was on or off, no in between. Essentially it was a very expensive one stage ac. I finally discovered that the Infinity thermostat would accept a wired remote temperature sensor. So I bought one, installed it on the third level and now the temperature control in the house is perfect. The system smoothly moves from stage to stage to maintain the temperature, it rarely goes to stage 4 and only once to stage 5 briefly [a 103F day]. So why doesn't Carrier train their dealers on how to properly configure a system for a specifc home with specific needs. I am lucky because I am a physicist and understand mechanics and heat flow. The typical home owner would be screwed. I love the Carrier technology, our home is perfectly comfortable and our electric bill has gone down ~15%. But Carrier customer service and the quality of their dealers................not so much.

You should talk about the electric saving a little more. My Infinity cut my electric bill in half.

Live in Central Texas Bryant Evolution variable system 17 years old works great with regular maintenance. But every time I need a regular check up the HVAC company ask how old is your system. Wait what? Don’t you need to check the system. Always trying to sale something new. This is why I’m here to learn about the systems.

I have a question that's a bit off-topic: I want to have central AC installed, so I've just begun to do my homework. So far I've learned that the quality of the installation is critical. I don't know know one HVAC contractor from the next, so what concrete things should I consider when looking for one, and what questions should I be asking? I like the idea of a variable speed unit, so I'll put this on my list. thanks.

The manual j calc is critical, one ton every 500sqft is meaningless.

Great new tech, but high-efficiency heat pumps began in Asia from companies like Daikin, Midea, and Mitsubishi, i.e. variable-speed and displacement compressors with inverter drive. Carrier's systems add a very expensive smart thermostat. Proprietary, so expect high replacement costs and perhaps orphaned in a decade.
